NCAA South: Nova, Hawaii, Hawkeyes, Terps Advance To Round of 32

Four games were played on Friday as the opening round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's South Regional continued.

Two games were played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

In the opener, Daniel Ochefu scored 17 points as the second-seeded Villanova Wildcats (30-5) demolished the fifteenth-seeded UNC-Asheville Bulldogs (22-12) 86-56.

In the second match, Adam Woodberry put back a missed shot as the overtime period expired as the seventh-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes (22-10) defeated the tenth-seeded Temple Owls (21-12) 72-70.

Jarrod Uthoff paced the Hawkeyes with 23 points.

Quenton DeCorsey, whose three free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining in regulation forced the overtime period, topped the Owls with 26 points.

Two games were played at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Washington.

In the opener, Quincy Smith scored a career-high 19 points while Roderick Bobbitt added 17 (to go with his seven rebounds and four assists) as the #13-seeded Hawaii Warriors (28-5) picked up their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, 77-66 over the depleted fourth-seeded California Golden Bears (23-11).

Jordan Matthews paced the Bears with 23 points.  Cal played minus leading scorer Tyrone Wallace (broke his hand in practice on Wednesday) and guard Jabari Bird (back spasms suffered during pre-game warm-ups, didn't play).

In the finale, Jake Layman scored 27 points as the fifth-seeded Maryland Terrapins (26-8) held off the 12th-seeded South Dakota State Jackrabbits (26-8) 79-74, despite 22 points from the Rabbits' Deondre Parks.
