MLS Cup Playoffs: Sounders Smother Dynamo To Claim West Title And Set Up Cup Final Rematch With TFC

At Seattle:

Victor Rodriguez (22'), Clint Dempsey (57'), and Will Bruin (73') each scored once on Thursday as the Seattle Sounders dominated the visiting Houston Dynamo 3-0 in game two of Major League Soccer's Western Conference Final and finished off their guests 5-0 on aggregate.

The Sounders will pay a visit on Toronto FC in a rematch of last year's MLS Cup Final, which Seattle won in the penalty-kick shootout (also at Toronto).

The 2017 MLS Cup Final will kick off on December 9 at 1:00 PM Pacific Time and will air on ESPN and UniMas.

Jim Nabors, TV's Gomer Pyle, R.I.P.

Jim Nabors, the Alabama-born singer and actor best remembered for his portrayal in the 1960s as Mayberry, North Carolina gas station attendant-turned-US Marine Corps Private First Class Gomer Pyle, first on The Andy Griffith Show, then on the spinoff sitcom, Gomer Pyle, USMC, passed away on Thursday at age 87.

MLS Cup Playoffs: Jozy Makes Things Rosy For Reds As His Goal Sends TFC To MLS Cup Final

At Toronto:

Jozy Altidore scored the only goal of both the match and the series in the 60th minute on Wednesday as Toronto FC defeated the visiting Columbus Crew 1-0 in game two of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference playoff final and won their second straight conference crown by that same score on aggregate.

The Reds will host the MLS Cup Final on Saturday, December 9 (1:00 PM Pacific Time, ESPN) against the winner of the Western final between Seattle and Houston (the Sounders lead the series 2-0 on aggregate), which will be decided on Thursday in Seattle.

CFP Rankings: Bama Falls To Fifth Place as Clemson Moves Into Top Spot With Auburn, Oklahoma, Wisconsin Rounding Out Top Four

In the latest College Football Playoff rankings that were released on Tuesday night, the Clemson Tigers climbed up two spot to take over the number one spot, with Auburn, after knocking off Alabama (who fell four spots to fifth place), having moved up four places to number two.  Oklahoma and Wisconsin, having moved up one spot each, took over third and fourth places respectively.

Southern California, the highest ranked Pac-12 Conference school, moved up one spot from last week to #10.

Other Pac-12 teams in the rankings:

Stanford moved up nine spots to #12.

Washington moved up four spots to #13.

Washington State moved down five spots to #18.

In Sunday PK80 Invitational action, Deontae North scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Portland State Vikings (5-2) to an 87-78 victory over the Stanford Cardinal (3-5), overcome a 28-point, 14-rebound performance from the Cardinal's Reid Travis as well as a nine-point halftime deficit.

Blue Demons Top Pilots In PK80 Invitational

At Portland, Oregon:

In Sunday play in the PK80 Invitational, Max Strus as a career night as he scored 21 points---sinking six three pointers in the process---while Marin Maric scored 19 points of his own while grabbing 13 rebounds as the DePaul Blue Demons (2-4) defeated the Portland Pilots (2-4) 82-69.


ARGOS BATTLE BACK TO WIN FIRST GREY CUP TITLE SINCE 2012

At Ottawa:

In the 105th Grey Cup Final played on Sunday, Cassius Vaughn ran back a fumble 109 yards for the game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter while Lirim Hajrullahu kicked the game-winning field goal with 49 seconds remaining as the Toronto Argonauts came from behind to upend the Calgary Stampeders 27-24.

Matt Black intercepted a pass from Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell in the end zone to seal the Argos' first Grey Cup championship in five years.

Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray, who completed 19 of 32 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown, became the first starting QB to win four Grey Cups.

Seahawks Hold Off Niners In Santa Clara

At Santa Clara, California:

Quarterback Russell Wilson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another on Sunday as the Seattle Seahawks (7-4) held off the San Francisco 49ers (1-10) 24-13 on the road.

Incidentally, the defeat---their ninth successive in the series against the Seahawks---officially eliminated the Niners from playoff contention, such as it was.

At Lake Buena Vista, Florida:

In the AdvoCare Invitational's seventh-place game on Sunday, Tres Tinkle scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Oregon State Beavers (3-3) overpowered the Marist Red Foxes (0-6) 65-46.

Ducks Avenge Last Year's Defeat, Bury Beavers In Civil War Mismatch

At Eugene, Oregon:

Running back Royce Freeman ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday to become the Pac-12 Conference's all time leader in rushing TDs (60) while Justin Herbert threw for 251 yards and three more scores (while running for a score himself) as the Oregon Ducks (7-5 overall, 4-5 in Pac-12 play), in avenging their 2016 defeat, destroyed the visiting Oregon State Beavers (1-11, 0-9) 69-10 in the 121st Civil War Game.

The Ducks appeared headed for a bowl game yet to be determined, while the Beavers (whose only win came against FCS school Portland State---who recently finished an 0-11 campaign) went through their second winless season in conference play in the last three years and are now in search of a new head football coach.

Ducks Get Back On Winning Track, Defeat DePaul In OT In PK 80 Invitational

At Portland, Oregon:

Payton Pritchard scored a career-high 29 points as the Oregon Ducks (5-1) defeated the DePaul Blue Demons 89-79 in overtime in Friday action from the consolation bracket of the PK 80 Invitational.

Marin Maric paced the Blue Demons with 22 points.

Sooners Too Much For Pilots In PK80 Invitational

At Portland, Oregon:

In Friday action in the consolation bracket of the PK 80 Invitational, Trae Young scored 33 points while Khadeem Lattin added 19---to go with his 16 rebounds---as the Oklahoma Sooners (3-1) downed the Portland Pilots (2-3) 93-71.

At Lake Buena Vista, Florida:

In Friday play in the Advocare Invitational, Deishaun Booker scored 14 points, dished out 12 assists, and grabbed five rebounds as the Long Beach State 49ers (3-3) held off the Oregon State Beavers (2-3) 74-69.

Gabe Levin, before he fowled out with 2:53 remaining added to the 49ers' coffers with 14 points of his own.

Stephen Thompson, Jr. topped the Beavers with 24 points while he grabbed a half-dozen rebounds.

Shamorie Ponds scored 26 points while Marcus LoVett added 18 on Thursday as the St. John's Red Storm (5-0) came back from a 10-point mid-second-half deficit to overtake the Oregon State Beavers (2-2) 82-77 in the opening round of the Advocare Invitational.

Stephen Thompson, Jr. topped the Beavers with 22 points.

UConn Knocks Off Ducks In PK80 Invitational

At Portland, Oregon:

In Thursday night action from the PK80 Invitational, Terry Larrier scored 18 points to lead the Connecticut Huskies (4-0) to a 71-63 victory over the Oregon Ducks (4-1).


Blue Devils Down Game Vikings

At Portland, Oregon:

Trevon Duval scored 22 points on Thursday to lead the top-ranked (in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls) Duke Blue Devils (6-0) overcame a four-point halftime deficit to overtake the Portland State Vikings (4-1) 99-81 in the PK80 Invitational.

CFP Rankings: Bama Stays On Top while Canes Jump Clemson To Move To #2; Oklahoma Stays At #4 With Wisconsin In Fifth

In the latest College Football Playoff rankings that were released on Tuesday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide remained at the top of the heap while the Miami Hurricanes moved into second place, ahead of the Clemson Tigers.  The Oklahoma Sooners remained in fourth place.

Wisconsin and Auburn stayed in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Southern California remained in 11th place as the highest ranked Pac-12 Conference school.

Other Pac-12 teams in the rankings:

Washington State at #13, up one spot from last week.

Washington moved up a spot to #17.

Stanford also moved up a spot, to #21.

 

MLS Cup Playoffs: Goose Eggs For Crew And Reds In East Final Opener; Sounders Blank Ten-Man Dynamo In Houston As West Final Commences

The semifinal round of the Major League Soccer Cup Playoffs  commenced on Tuesday with the opening game of each of the two conference finals.

The opening match of the Eastern Conference Final between the Columbus Crew and visiting Toronto FC ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

WESTERN CONFERENCE FINAL:

Gustav Svensson (11') and Will Bruin (42') delivered the goals as the Seattle Sounders blanked the ten-man Houston Dynamo 2-0 on the road in the opening match of the Western Conference Final.

Bryce Canda and Michael Mayhew each scored 17 points on Monday as the Portland State Vikings (4-0) held off the visiting Utah State Aggies (2-3) 83-79.

Sam Merrill paced the visitors with a career-high 23 points, 18 of them in the second half.

Men's College Hoops: Ducks' Support In AP Poll Grows; Also Receive Support In Coaches' Poll

After their home victories over Alabama State (Friday) and Ball State (Sunday), the Oregon Ducks gained support in the Associated Press men's college basketball poll that was released on Monday.  

The Ducks would be ranked tied for #37 with Temple.

The Ducks also received support in the USA Today/Coaches poll, where they would be ranked #29.

Grey Cup Playoffs: It's Argos Vs. Stamps For The Marbles

Both divisional finals in the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup Playoffs were contested on Sunday.

EAST DIVISION:

At Toronto:

In the East Division Final, quarterback Ricky Ray led a last-minute drive which culminated in backup QB Cody Fajardo's one-yard run for the game-winning touchdown with 23 seconds remaining as the Toronto Argonauts recovered from blowing a 15-point fourth-quarter lead and overtook the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders 25-21.



WEST DIVISION:

At Calgary, Alberta:

Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 20 of 32 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns as the Calgary Stampeders overcame an early deficit to overtake and hold off the visiting Edmonton Eskimos 32-28 in the West Division Final.



Next Sunday, the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts will take part in the 105th Grey Cup Final, to be played at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa, with kickoff set for 3:30 PM Pacific Time.  The game will telecast in the United States on ESPN 2.

Deontae North III scored 19 points as the Portland State Vikings (2-0), with seven players scoring in double figures, buried the visiting Willamette University Bearcats----a Division III team based in Salem, Oregon----111-60 on Tuesday night.

Bama Moves To Top Of CFP Rankings With Clemson, 'Canes, Sooners Rounding Out Top Four; Badgers At #5

In the latest College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide moved up one spot to the number one position, followed by the Clemson Tigers at #2 (up two spots from last wekk), the Miami Hurricanes (up four spots), then the Oklahoma Sooners (up one spot).

Cowboys Top Beavers In Corvallis

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Hayden Dalton scored 22 points, 12 of them on four three-point buckets on Monday night as the Wyoming Cowboys (2-0) defeated the Oregon State Beavers (1-1) 75-66 on the road.

Justin James added 19 points and Alan Herndon 16 (who himself converted four three-point shots) to the Cowboys' coffers.

Tres Tinkle paced the Beavers with 20 points to go with his 14 rebounds and three steals.  Drew Eubanks added 17 to the OSU totals.

Ducks Too Much For Prairie View A&M

At Eugene, Oregon:

Troy Brown scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds on Monday night as the Oregon Ducks (2-0) blew out the visiting Prairie View A&M Panthers (0-2) 100-67.

Zachary Hamilton paced the visitors with 23 points.

The Ducks stretched the nation's longest current home winning streak to 44 games (a school record).

Men's College Hoops: Ducks Get One Vote In AP Poll

In the first Associated Press men's top 25 college basketball poll of the regular season that was released on Monday, the Oregon Ducks, coming off their Friday home win over Coppin State, received one vote, which would tie them for 48th place with fellow 2017 Final Four entry South Carolina.

C.J. Helps Niners Top Giants For First Win Of Season

At Santa Clara, California:

Quarterback C.J. Beathard threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns (83 yards to Marquise Goodwin and 47 yards to Garrett Celek) and ran for another major score on Sunday as the San Francisco 49ers (1-9) picked up their first win of the season (and first win as an NFL head coach for Kyle Shanahan) by defeating the visiting New York Giants (1-8) 31-21.

Grey Cup Playoffs: Riders, Eskimos Take Divisional Semifinals On Road; Argos, Stamps Await Saskatchewan And Edmonton, Respectively

Two games were contested on Sunday as the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup Playoffs commenced.

EASTERN DIVISION:

At Ottawa:

Marcus Thigpen scored on a 75-yard touchdown run en route to a 169-yard afternoon on the ground as the Saskatchewan Roughriders ousted the defending Grey Cup champions Ottawa REDBLACKS 31-20 on the road in a divisional semifinal game.



WESTERN DIVISION:

At Winnipeg, Manitoba:

Quarterback Mike Reilly threw for 334 yards while Adarius Bowman caught two touchdown passes as the Edmonton Eskimos knocked off the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 39-32 on the road in a divisional semifinal contest.



Next Sunday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will visit the Toronto Argonauts in the Eastern Division Final (10:00 AM Pacific Time) while it's an all-Alberta Western Division Final as the Edmonton Eskimos visit the Calgary Stampeders (1:30 PM Pacific Time).


ESPNNEWS will telecast both games to the United States.

CFP Rankings: Dawgs, Tide, Irish, Clemson Still Hold Top Four; Sooners Still #5

In the latest College Football Playoff rankings that were released on Tuesday night, Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Clemson still held the top four positions with Oklahoma remaining in fifth place.

The Washington Huskies remained the highest-ranked Pac-12 team, climbing up three spots from last week to #9.

Other Pac-12 in the rankings:

Southern California at #12, up five spots from last week.

Washington State at #19, up six spots.

Arizona and Stanford fell out of the rankings after weekend defeats.

Roy Halladay, Former MLB Pitcher Who Threw Playoff No-Hitter, R.I.P.

Roy Halliday, the former Major League Baseball pitcher who threw a playoff no-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010 against the Cincinnati Reds (the only post-season no hitter other than Don Larsen's World Series perfect game in 1956), and who won the Cy Young Award in both leagues, passed away on Tuesday, a result of a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico at age 40.

Mr. Halliday, an eight time All-Star,  won the Cy Young Award twice, once in the American League (in 2003 with the Toronto Blues Jays, where he spent the first 12 years of his 16 year Major League career), and once in the National League (in 2010 with the Phillies, where he spent four years).

Roy had a record of 203 wins against 105 defeats with a career earned run average of 3.38.

If Morris And Austin Can Have Their Minis And Riley Their Elfs...

Then Wolseley can have their Hornets.

Broken Record: Niners Fall Again As Cardinals Drop San Fran To 0-9

At Santa Clara, California:

Drew Stanton threw for two touchdowns while Adrian Peterson ran for 159 yards on a career-record 37 carries on Sunday as the Arizona Cardinals (4-4) held off the still-winless San Francisco 49ers (0-9) 20-10 on the road as the Niners extended the worst start in their 72-year history with their 23rd defeat in their last 24 games.

MLS Cup Playoffs: Reds, Crew Advance To East Finals Despite Game-Two Defeats; Dynamo Oust Timbers In Portland To Get Crack At Sounders

The second round of the MLS Cup Playoffs concluded on Sunday with three games.  

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Toronto:

Despite dropping a 1-0 game-two home decision to the New York Red Bulls (which saw both clubs reduced to ten men), Toronto FC, with the aggregate score at 2-2, won their conference semifinal series on away goals.

At New York:

Despite being blanked 2-0 on the road in game two, the Columbus Crew still eliminated New York City 4-3 on aggregate in their conference semifinal series.



WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Portland, Oregon:

Dylan Remick (43') and Mauro Manotas (77') each scored once as the Houston Dynamo came from behind to upend the Portland Timbers 2-1 on the road in game two and capture their conference semifinal series on aggregate by that same score.

Huskies Roast Ducks In Seattle

Dante Pettis became the NCAA's all-time career leader in punt returns for touchdowns on Saturday night (he now has nine of them) while catching a pass 47 yards for another score as the Washington Huskies (#12 CFP and AP, #11 Coaches; 8-1 overall, 5-1 in Pac-12 play) overcame a 3-0 deficit at the end of the opening quarter by scoring 38 unanswered points as they demolished the visiting Oregon Ducks (5-5, 2-5) 38-3.

Eskimos Knock Off Riders In Regina, Send Saskatchewan Into East Playoffs

At Regina, Saskatchewan:

In Saturday's Canadian Football League regular-season finale for both Grey Cup Playoff-bound clubs, the Edmonton Eskimos (12-6) knocked off the Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8) on the road by a score of 28-13.

Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly ran for three touchdowns to enable Edmonton to stay in the Western Division when the playoffs open next Sunday while the Riders will travel to Ottawa to face the defending Grey Cup champs in an Eastern Division semifinal.

MLS Cup Playoffs: Deuce's Double Powers Sounders Past Caps And Into West Final

At Seattle:

Clint Dempsey scored twice (56', 88') on Thursday as the Seattle Sounders blanked the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 in game two of their Major League Soccer Western Conference semifinal playoff series and ousted their Cascadia rivals by that same score on aggregate.

The Sounders will next take on the Portland-Houston winner in the Western Conference two-game final.

College Hoops: Ducks Get Some Support In Pre-Season AP And Coaches Polls

The Oregon Ducks received some support in both the pre-season Associated Press men's college basketball poll that was released on Wednesday.

The Ducks also received support in the USA Today/Coaches poll that was released back on October 19.

The Ducks would be in a tie for 44th place in the AP poll, tied for 39th place in the Coaches rankings.

No support was found for Oregon State, Portland, or Portland State in either poll.
