Eric Stuteville scored 17 points on Saturday as the Sacramento State Hornets (7-12 overall, 4-4 in Big Sky play) scored the last nine points of regulation, then held off the visiting Portland State Vikings (11-8, 4-4) 80-77 in overtime.

Calaen Robinson topped the Vikes with 23 points.

Toreros Ground Pilots In Portland

At Portland, Oregon:

Olin Carter III scored 24 points (making five three-pointers in the process) on Saturday night as the San Diego Toreros (11-11 overall, 4-6 in WCC play) handed the Portland Pilots (9-13, 2-8) their eight consecutive defeat, 68-52 on the road.

Jazz Johnson paced the Pilots with 19 points.

Colorado Buffaloes Oregon, Snap Ducks' 17-Game Winning Streak

At Boulder, Colorado:

Derrick White scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half on Saturday night as the Colorado Buffaloes (12-10 overall, 2-7 in Pac-12 play) snapped the Oregon Ducks' (19-3, 8-1; #10 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls) school-record 17-game winning streak (the third longest active streak in Division I) with a 74-65 home victory.

Utes Keep Beavers Winless In Pac-12 Play And On The Road

Kyle Kuzma scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds on Saturday night as the Utah Runnin' Utes (15-6 overall, 6-3 in Pac-12 play) held off the visiting Oregon State Beavers (4-18. 0-9) 86-78.

Stephen Thompson scored a career-high 30 points and JaQuori McLaughlin added 22 for the Beavers who are currently 0-9 on the road.

Barbara Hale, Actress Best Remembered For Emmy-Winning Role As Perry Mason's Secretary On TV, R.I.P.

Though she appeared in numerous motion pictures in the 1940s and 1950s, actress Barbara Hale will best remembered for her Emmy Award-winning (for best supporting actress in a dramatic series-1959) portrayal as loyal secretary Della Street on the Perry Mason television series (CBS, 1957-66), as well as a series of Perry Mason made-for-TV movies (NBC-1985-1995).

Miss Hale, who was the last surviving original major cast member from the original TV series,  passed away at her Los Angeles home on Thursday at age 94.

Mike Connors, TV's "Joe Mannix," R.I.P.

Mike Connors, the actor best remembered for his portrayal of a maverick private eye in the CBS Network series Mannix, passed away on Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital at age 91.

Mike Condon, Mr. Connors' son-in-law said that his passing was caused by complications from leukemia only a week after he had been diagnosed.

Dillon Brooks, back from a foot injury, scored 19 points on Thursday night as the Oregon Ducks (19-2 overall, 8-0 in Pac-12 play; #10 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls), stretched their school-record winning streak to 17 games following their 73-67 road win over the Utah Runnin' Utes (14-6, 5-3).

Buffaloes Top Beavers For First Conference Win; OSU Lone Pac-12 School Without League Victory

George King scored a season-high 24 points on Thursday as the Colorado Buffaloes (11-10 overall, 1-7 in Pac-12 play) picked up their first conference win of the season by holding off the visiting Oregon State Beavers (4-17, 0-8) 85-78, despite 27 points and 11 rebounds from the guests' Drew Eubanks and 26 points from Stephen Thompson, Jr. (a career high).

The Beavers, who last season reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1990, are now the only Pac-12 team without a conference victory.

Lamond Murray, Jr. scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Thursday as Pepperdine (6-15 overall, 2-7 in WCC play) downed visiting Portland (9-12, 2-7) 78-60 as the Waves snapped their five-game losing streak and stretched the Pilots' losing skid to seven contests.

Farewell, Mary

Mary Tyler Moore, the actress, whom, prior to 1970, was already best known for her role as a TV comedy show's head writer's wife on The Dick Van Dyke Show (CBS, 1961-66), but who would best be remembered for starring in the ground-breaking CBS Network sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-77) ,in which she played a single woman who was an associate producer, then producer, at a fictitious Minneapolis TV station's news department, passed away on Wednesday, a month after her 80th birthday.

According to her family, Miss Moore's  passing at a Greenwich, Connecticut hospital was caused by cardiopulmonary arrest after she had contracted pneumonia.

In a contest that was rescheduled from earlier this month due to a winter storm in  the Rose City, Zach Collins scored 13 points on Monday as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (20-0 overall, 8-0 in WCC) remained Division I's only remaining undefeated men's college basketball team after handing the homestanding Portland Pilots (9-11, 2-6) their sixth successive defeat, 83-64, thanks to a healthy dose of balanced scoring, with four Bulldogs scoring in double digits.

In their final game at the Georgia Dome, quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 392 yards and four touchdowns and ran 14 yards for another score as the Atlanta Falcons won their first NFC title in eighteen years (and their second in franchise history) with a 44-21 beat-down of the visiting Green Bay Packers.



AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:

At Foxborough, Massachusetts:

Quarterback Tom Brady threw for a playoff career-best (and franchise record) 384 yards and three touchdowns as the New England Patriots landed themselves in a record ninth Super Bowl following their 36-17 home domination of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC title game.



The Atlanta Falcons (in their second try; they fell to Denver in Super Bowl XXXIII) will face the New England Patriots (making their ninth Super Bowl appearance, having won four times) in Super Bowl LI, to take place at NRG Stadium in Houston Sunday after next at 3:30 PM Pacific Time (FOX).

The Divisional round of the National Football League playoff concluded on Sunday with two games.

After Aaron Rodgers (who threw for two touchdowns) completed a 36-yard pass to Jared Cook, Mason Crosby delivered on a 51-yard game-winning field goal as time expired as the Green Bay Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34-31 to advance to next Sunday's NFC Championship Game in Atlanta against the Falcons (in their Georgia Dome finale) at 12:05 PM Pacific Time (FOX).

Payton Pritchard scored 17 points on Saturday as the Oregon Ducks (16-2 overall, 5-0 in Pac-12 play; #13 in the Associated Press poll, #11 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings), who scored the first 21 points,  annihilated the visiting Oregon State Beavers (4-14, 0-5) 85-43 in the latest edition of the basketball Civil War series.

The Victory was the Ducks' 14th in a row (their longest winning streak since 1947) and their 36th consecutive at home.

Two games were played on Sunday as the divisional round of the National Football League playoffs commenced.

Steelers And Chiefs Playoff In KC Pushed Back

This coming Sunday's American Football Conference divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs has been pushed back from 10:05 AM to 5:20 PM Pacific Time on Sunday due to a storm that is projected to hit the Kansas City area.

NBC will still televised the game as originally intended.

Gaels Club Pilots In Portland

At Portland, Oregon:

Calvin Hermanson scored a career-high 27 points on Thursday night as the Saint Mary's Gaels (15-1 overall, 5-0 in WCC play; ranked #21 in the Associated Press poll, #22 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings) demolished the Portland Pilots (9-7, 2-1) 74-33 on the road.

Here's another early live-action three-strip Technicolor short, with Leon Errol starring in a 1934 Warner Brothers-Vitaphone comedy, "Service With A Smile."

LAST-SECOND TD PASS CARRIES CLEMSON PAST 'BAMA AS TIGERS WIN FIRST NATIONAL TITLE SINCE 1981

At Tampa, Florida:

Quarterback Deshaun Watson (who passed for 420 yards) ran for a touchdown and threw for three more (two of them to Hunter Renfrow, the second of which went for two yards and the game-winning score with one second left) as the second-seeded Clemson Tigers (14-1) upended the top-seeded---and previously unbeaten---defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide (14-1) 35-31 to win the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday and took their first national title since 1981.  The victory was the Tigers' first against the Crimson Tide since 1905.

Men's College Hoops: Ducks Continue Climb In Both Polls

After last week's road sweep of the Pac-12's Evergreen State schools, the Oregon Ducks climbed up in both the Associated Press (#13, up two spots from last week) and USA Today/Coaches (#11, up three) men's college basketball polls that were released on Monday.

One again, the Ducks were the only one of the Beaver State's four men's Division I basketball programs to receive support in either poll.

NFL Playoffs: Dominating Wins For Steelers, Packers; Pittsburgh To Get KC, Green Bay To Visit Dallas Next

The opening round of the National Football League playoffs concluded on Sunday with two games.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:

At Pittsburgh:

Le'Veon Bell ran for a franchise postseason record 167 yards and two touchdowns while Ben Roethlisberger threw two TD passes to Antonio Brown (of 50 and 62 yards) as the Pittsburgh Steelers dominated the visiting Miami Dolphins 30-12.



NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:

At Green Bay, Wisconsin:

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 362 yards and four touchdowns (three of them to Randall Cobb) as the Green Bay Packers broke open a tight contest in the second half and delivered a 38-13 beat-down on the visiting New York Giants.

DUKES UPEND PENGUINS TO WIN FIRST FCS TITLE SINCE 2004

At Frisco, Texas:

James Madison (14-1) won their first NCAA Football Championship Subdivision national championship since 2004 (their second overall) defeating Youngstown State (12-4) 28-14 on Saturday.

Bryan Schor threw for two touchdowns while Khalid Abdullah ran for 101 yards and two more scores as the Virginia-based Dukes kept the Penguins at bay.

Vikings Hold Off Hornets

At Portland, Oregon:

Traylin Farris scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds on Saturday as the Portland State Vikings (9-5 overall, 2-1 in Big Sky play) defeated the visiting Sacramento State Hornets (3-11, 0-3) 83-76, overcoming 25 points from the visitors' Justin Strings.

NFL Playoffs: Texans Ruin Raiders' First Playoff Game in 14 Years; Seahawks Running Game Too Much For Lions (Detroit Suffers NFL-Record Ninth Straight Playoff Defeat)

Two opening-round playoff games were contested on Saturday as the National Football League Playoffs commenced.

At Houston:

Quarterback Brock Osweiler threw for a touchdown and ran for another one while Jadeveon Clowney intercepted a pass (which set up a Lamar Miller touchdown run) as the Houston Texans defeated the visiting Oakland Raiders 27-14 in an opening-round playoff game which was Oakland's first post-season contest in 14 years.

At Seattle:

In an opening-round match, quarterback Russell Wilson threw for two touchdowns (one each to Paul Richardson [for two yards] and Doug Baldwin [for 13 yards]) while Thomas Rawls (who ran for 161 yards, a franchise playoff record) ran four yards for another score as the Seattle Seahawks downed the visiting Detroit Lions 26-6 to win their tenth straight home playoff game.  The Lions have now dropped an NFL-record nine consecutive playoff contests, have not won a playoff game in 25 years (and haven't won a playoff game on the road since 1957).

The Seahawks will visit the Atlanta Falcons in a divisional playoff game next Saturday afternoon at 1:35 PM Pacific Time (FOX).

Josh Hawkinson scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on Wednesday night as the Washington State Cougars (9-5 overall, 2-0 in Pac-12 play) already doubled their conference victory total from all last season after downing the visiting Oregon State Beavers (4-12, 0-3).

Kendal Manuel topped the Beavers with a career-high 20 points, hitting six three-point baskets in the process.
