Music City Bowl: Vandy Tops NC State To Complete First Nine-Win Season Since 1915

At Nashville, Tennessee:

Jordan Rodgers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another on Monday as the Vanderbilt Commodores (9-4) completed their first nine-win campaign in 97 years with a 38-24 win over the North Carolina State Wolfpack (7-6) in the Music City Bowl.

The Commodores finished the season with a seven-game winning streak, their longest such run since 1948, when they won eight in a row.

NIners Lock Up NFC West Title; Grab #2 Seed, Gain Bye, Will Host Divisional Playoff January 12

At San Francisco:

Colin Kaepernick threw for 276 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both to Michael Crabtree (who caught eight passes for 172 yards) as the San Francisco 49ers clinched the NFC West Division crown on Sunday with a 27-13 home win over the Arizona Cardinals.  Coupled with Minnesota's playoff-berth-clinching 37-34 last-second home win over Green Bay, the Niners locked up the NFC's second playoff seed and will have a first-round bye before hosting a divisional playoff on January 12.

At San Antonio, Texas:

Quarterback David Ash threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 36-yarder to Marquise Goodwin with 2:24 remaining as the Texas Longhorns (#23 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, #25 in the USA Today/Coaches poll; 9-4) came from behind to upend the Oregon State Beavers (#13 in the BCS standings, #14 in the coaches poll, #15 in the Associated Press rankings; 9-4) 31-27 in Saturday's Valero Alamo Bowl.

Pilots Fall At Home

At Portland, Oregon:

Brandon Provost scored 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, which included five three-pointers on Saturday night as the Texas-Pan American Broncos used a 17-6 run to start the second half and topped the Portland Pilots 56-52 on the road.

Both teams are currently at 7-8.

Jerrelle Benimon scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds while Marcus Damas converted an 18-foot shot with 0.8 seconds remaining in overtime as the Towson Tigers (5-8) came back from a 19-point second-half deficit, forced overtime, and knocked off the home-standing Oregon State Beavers (9-3) 67-66 on Saturday, ending the Beavers' five-game winning streak.

Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl: Sun Devils Torch Midshipmen

At San Francisco:

Quarterback Taylor Kelly threw for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth while running back Marion Grace ran for 159 yards and two scores as the Arizona State Sun Devils (8-5) buried Navy (8-5) 62-28 in Saturday's edition of the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

Pinstripe Bowl: Orangemen Way Too Strong For Mountaineers In Big East Finale

At New York City:

Prince-Tyson Gulley ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns as Syracuse (8-5) mauled West Virginia (7-6) 38-14 in Saturday's Pinstripe Bowl, played on a snow-covered field at Yankee Stadium.

The game was the Orangemen's Big East Conference finale as they will join the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

Armed Forces Bowl: Backup QB Guides Owls To Victory Over Falcons

At Fort Worth, Texas:

Backup freshman quarterback Driphus Jackson, in relief of injured starter Taylor McHargue, threw for 264 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Jordan Taylor as the Rice Owls (7-6) broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and defeated the Air Force Falcons (6-7) 33-14 in Saturday's Armed Forces Bowl.

After Seth Dodge threw a game-tying touchdown of 35 yards to Eric Ward with just over one minute remaining in regulation, D.J. Johnson intercepted a pass and returned it 39 yards, setting up Ryan Bustin's game winning 28-yard field goal as time expired as the Texas Tech Red Raiders (8-5) came from behind to upend the Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-7) 34-31 in Friday's Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Russell Athletic Bowl: OT FG Enable Hokies To Avoid Losing Season

At Orlando, Florida:

Cody Journell kicked a 22-yard field goal in overtime as the Virginia Tech Hokies (7-6) defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (9-4) 13-10 in Friday's edition of the Russell Athletic Bowl.  The Hokies, who scored the final 13 points of the game, avoided what would have been their first losing season since 1992 as they won their final three games.

Independence Bowl: Bobcats Devour Warhawks

At Shreveport, Louisiana:

Tyler Tettleton threw for two touchdowns while Beau Blankenship ran for four others as the Ohio University Bobcats (9-4) demolished the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (8-5) 45-14 in Friday's Independence Bowl.  The game was the Warhawks' first after 19 years in the top level of college football.

Holiday Bowl: Baylor Too Much For UCLA

At San Diego:

Nick Florence threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while running back Glasco Martin ran for three more scores as the Baylor Bears (8-5) dominated the UCLA Bruins (#17 in the Bowl Championship Series standings and the Associated Press poll, #19 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 9-5) 49-26 in Thursday's Holiday Bowl.

Belk Bowl: Bearcats Outlast Pesky Blue Devils

At Chalotte, North Carolina:

Quarterback Brendon Kay completed 17 of 25 passes for 332 yards and four touchdown, including one of 83 yards to Travis Kelce with 80 seconds remaining for the winning score as the Cincinnati Bearcats (10-3) outlasted the Duke Blue Devils (6-7; still seeking their first bowl win since 1961) 48-34 in Thursday's edition of the Belk Bowl.

Miltary Bowl: Spartans Hold Off Falcons To Comlete First 11-Win Campaign Since 1940

At Washington:

Quarterback David Fales completed 33 of 43 passes for 395 yards and two touchdowns as the San Jose State Spartans (11-2; #24 in the Bowl Championship Series standings and in both the USA Today/Coaches and Associated Press polls) defeated Bowling Green (8-5) 29-20 in Thursday's Military Bowl.  The victory assured the Spartans of their first eleven-win season since 1940.

Little Caesars Pizza Bowl: Chippewas Hold Off Hilltoppers

At Detroit:

Quarterback Ryan Radcliffe threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner of 11 yards to Cody Wilson with 5:11 remaining, giving the  Central Michigan Chippewas a 24-21 win over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in Wednesday's Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

Both teams finished the season at 7-6.  The defeat spoiled the Hilltoppers' bowl debut since joining college football's top flight in 2009.

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl: Defensive Performance Sparks Mustangs Past Bulldogs

At Honolulu:

Defensive end Margus Hunt forced two fumbles that set up field goals and sacked opposing quarterback Derek Carr in the end zone for a safety as the SMU Mustangs (7-6) dominated the Fresno State Bulldogs (9-4) 43-10 in Monday's Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.  Taylor Reed and Hayden Greenbauer returned interceptions of 69 and 83 yards respectively for Mustang touchdowns.

Jack Klugman, Starred As Oscar Madison In TV's "The Odd Couple," And In Title Role In "Quincy M.E.," R.I.P.

Jack Klugman, the veteran character actor best remembered for his portrayal of the slovenly sportswriter Oscar Madison in the 1970s TV adaptation of The Odd Couple, then played a crusading forensic pathologist in Quincy, M.E., passed away on Monday at his home in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles at the age of 90.

Mr. Klugman (who had survived an earlier throat cancer scare) had a vocal cord removed in 1989 due to cancer and his voice was reduced to a gravelly whisper.

On The Odd Couple, Jack won two Emmy awards for his role as slovenly Oscar, while Tony Randall won one for his role of fussbudget Felix Unger.

On Quincy, Jack played the title role of a crusading pathologist who worked in the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Jack Klugman appeared in numerous motion pictures.  He played Juror #5 in the film adaptation of the live television play "12 Angry Men."

In Las Vegas Classic consolation-game action on Sunday, Ryan Nicholas (who grabbed 12 rebounds) and Derrick Rodgers each scored 12 points as the Portland Pilots (7-7) defeated the Bradley Braves (8-4) 57-55.

Seahawks Blast Sluggish Niners, Lock Up Playoff Berth, Still Have Shot At Divisional Title

At Seattle:

Quarterback Russell Wilson threw for four touchdowns while Marshawn Lynch ran for two other scores on Sunday night as the Seattle Seahawks (10-5)--still unbeaten at home--locked up a playoff berth with a 42-13 home domination of the San Francicsco 49ers (10-4-1).  This prevented the Niners from locking up the NFC West Division title.  The Seahawks can still win the divisional title next Sunday by defeating St. Louis at home, provided the Niners fall at home to Arizona.

Beavers Top San Diego To Stretch Winning Streak To Five

At Las Vegas:

In Saturday action from the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, Eric Moreland and Roberto Nelson each netted 20 points as the Oregon State Beavers (9-2)  defeated San Diego 86-79 (6-7).  The victory was the fifth' consecutive for the Beavers.

Vikings Fall To Wildcats In OT

At Portland, Oregon:

Five players----Gelaun Wheelwright and Jordan Richardson with 14 points apiece; Scott Bamforth, 13; and Kyle Tresnak and Davion Berry with 12 each----scored in double figures on Saturday as the Weber State Wildcats (6-3 overall, 2-0 in Big Sky play) defeated the home-standing Portland State Vikings 73-69 (3-6, 1-1) in overtime.

SDCCU Poinsettia Bowl: Kyle Van Noy's Two Defensive TDs Spark Cougars

At San Diego:

Kyle Van Noy scored two defensive touchdowns (a fumble return and an interception return of 17 yards) as the BYU Cougars (8-5) defeated the San Diego State Aztecs (9-4) 23-6 in Thursday's edition of the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, a battle of two former Western Athletic and later Mountain West Conference rivals.

Eric Moreland and Roberto Nelson each netted 14 points on Wednesday night as the Oregon State Beavers (8-2) picked up their fourth straight victory, 69-53  over visiting Howard (3-9).  Mike Phillips scored 15 points to pace the Bison.

Ducks Drop Triple-Overtime Thriller In El Paso

At El Paso, Texas:

Konner Tucker converted a three-point shot with fourteen seconds remaining in the third overtime period on Wednesday as the UTEP Miners (4-5), helped along by Julian Washburn's 23 points and John Bohannon's 21, knocked off the visiting Oregon Ducks (9-2) 91-84.  Damyean Dotson scored 20 points to pace the Ducks.

In an opening round game played on Wednesday night for the Las Vegas Classic, Kevin Bailey scored 27 points while Riley Barker added 16 as the Portland Pilots (6-6) notched their third straight win, 74-64 over North Florida (3-8).

A 21-point, nine-rebound night from Ryan Nicholas, along with 18 points from Kevin Bailey, lifted the Portland Pilots (5-6) to a 69-51 Monday night home win over Cal State Bakersfield (4-7).

Hoops: Ducks Still On Cusp Of AP Top 25

The Oregon Ducks are just barely outside the Associated Press (media) top 25 men's college basketball poll that was released on Monday.  The Ducks would be ranked #26 (just behind North Carolina State).

Oregon would be ranked #28 in the latest USA Today/Coaches poll, which also was released on Monday.

Still no support in either poll for the Beaver State's other three men's basketball teams.

At Boise, Idaho:

Game Most Valuable Player Kerwynn Williams ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns as the Utah State Aggies (#22 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, #18 in Associated Press media poll, #20 in the USA Today/Coaches poll; 11-2) dominated the Toledo Rockets (9-4) 41-15 in Saturday's Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.  It was the Aggies' first bowl victory since 1993.  Utah State will likely end a season nationally-ranked for the first time since 1961.

Niners Jump Out To Big Lead, Hold Off Pats Rally, Clinch Playoff Berth

At Foxborough, Massachusetts:

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for four touchdowns on Sunday night, two of them to Michael Crabtree, one of them (a 38-yarder) which 6:25 remaining in the fourth quarter which turned out to be the game winner as the San Francisco 49ers (10-3-1) raced out to a 28-point second half lead, survived a New England comeback which had tied the game, then defeated the Patriots (10-4) 41-34 on the road to clinch their second straight playoff berth.  The Niners can lock up the NFC West Division title and assure themselves of at least one home playoff game with a win next Sunday night at Seattle.

Roberto Nelson scored 20 of his career high-tying 34 points in the second half on Sunday while Devon Collier added 25 as the Oregon State Beavers (7-2) defeated the visiting Chicago State Cougars (3-9) 87-77.

At Eugene, Oregon:

Tony Woods, who converted 7 of 11 shots from the field, scored 14 points as the Oregon Ducks (9-1) downed the visiting Nebraska Cornhuskers (6-3) 60-38 on Saturday.

Vikings Hold Off Visiting Bruins (George Fox, That Is)

At Portland, Oregon:

Michael Harthun scored 16 points while Renaldo Parker added 15 as the Portland State Vikings (2-5) held off  visiting George Fox (NAIA; 5-4 overall) 85-74 on Saturday, despite 25 points from the Bruins' Sean Atkins.

In the opening game of the 2012-13 college football bowl season, quarterback Matt Scott threw a pair of short touchdown passes in the final 46 seconds as the Arizona Wildcats (8-5), who trailed by 17 points as the fourth quarter commenced, came back to upend the Nevada Wolf Pack (7-6) 49-48 in Saturday's New Mexico Bowl.

The Oregon Ducks are just on the outside of the Associated Press men's college basketball poll released this past Monday.  They would be ranked tied for #26 with Pittsburgh.  The Ducks would be ranked 28th in the latest USA Today/Coaches poll.

Still no support for Oregon's other three men's collegiate basketball programs.

Keenan Reynolds ran eight yards for the game-winning touchdowns on Saturday as Navy (8-4) defeated Army (2-10) for the eleventh consecutive year 17-13.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, Matriarch Of Journalism Family, Rupert's Mom, R.I.P.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, the 103-year-old mother of media magnate Rupert Murdoch, passed away on Wednesday at her estate near Melbourne, Australia.

Jazz Legend Dave Brubeck, R. I. P.

Dave Brubeck, the pianist and composer who helped made jazz popular once again during the 1950s and 1960s, and who was best remembered for recording the first jazz album to sell a million copies ("Time Out") and the still identifiable single from the album ("Take Five"), passed away on Wednesday at Norwalk, California while en route to a cardiology appointment.

Mr. Brubeck would have celebrated his 92nd birthday this Thursday.

Greg Zuerlein, whose 53-yard field goal sent the game into overtime, kicked the game-winning 54-yarder with 26 seconds left in the extra period as the St. Louis Rams (5-6-1) knocked off the visiting San Francisco 49ers (8-3-1) 16-13 on Sunday.

Dominating Home Win For Ducks

At Eugene, Oregon:

Five players----Carlos Emery with 16 points, Arsalan Kazemi (who also had 13 rebounds) and Daymen Dotson 11 each, and Dominic Artis and E.J. Singer 10 apiece----each scored in double-figures as the Oregon Ducks (7-1) dominated visiting Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-6) 80-59 on Saturday.

Brock Motum scored 29 points on Saturday night while Royce Woolridge added 20 as the Washington State Cougars (5-3) defeated the visiting Portland Pilots (3-4) 72-60.

Beavers Annihilate Visiting Privates---Uhhhh----Colonels In Regular-Season Finale

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Markus Wheaton made 12 receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown as the Oregon State Beavers (#15 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, #16 in the Associated Press media poll, and #17 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 9-3), who piled up 683 yards of total offense, set a single-game school scoring record as they destroyed Nicholls State, an FCS school from Thibodeaux, Louisiana (1-10), 77-3 on Saturday.

The contest was originally scheduled to be the season opener for both teams on September 1, but Hurricane Isaac bore down on the Colonels' Louisiana campus.

Saturday's game was the regular-season finale for both schools.

The Beavers, who reversed last year's 3-9 campaign, are likely to play in a bowl game later this month.
