Timbers Top RSL For Crucial Home Victory

At Portland, Oregon:

Diego Valeri scored the lone goal of the match in the 16th minute on Saturday as the Portland Timbers held off visiting Real Salt Lake 1-0.

The Timbers were reduced to ten men after Renzo Zambrano was ejected via the red card in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Steve Clark made six saves to preserve the shutout and victory.

Next Saturday, the Timbers will play host to Sporting Kansas City at 7:30 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest; ESPN+).


T2 Knock Off Reno 1868 In Nevada

At Reno, Nevada:

In Saturday USL Championship action, Carlos Anguiano scored the game winner in the 42nd minute as Portland Timbers 2 upended Reno 1868 by a 3-1 score on the road.

Next Sunday, T2 will play host to Orange County SC at 2:00 PM Pacific Time (ESPN+).

Ducks Blow 15-Point Lead, Fall To Auburn In Final Seconds

At Arlington, Texas:

In Saturday's season-opening contest for both schools, quarterback Bo Nix threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Seth Williams from 26 yards out with nine seconds remaining as the Auburn Tigers (#16 in both the AP and Coaches' polls) scored the last 21 points and overcame a 15-point deficit-----and the Oregon Ducks (#11 AP, #13 Coaches) 27-21 in the Advocare Classic.

Cristian Roldan (22') and Raul Ruidiaz (47') each scored once on Friday as the Seattle Sounders copped the Cascadia Cup after their 2-1 road victory over the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer action.

Diego Valeri scored the Timbers' lone goal in the 54th minute.

Ducks Rank 11th In AP Pre-Season Gridiron Poll; 13th In Coaches Rankings

The Oregon Ducks were ranked #11 in the Associated Press pre-season poll that was released on Monday.

The Ducks were the highest-ranked Pac-12 school in this poll (led by defending national champions Clemson, followed by Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ohio State in the top five).

Other Pac-12 Conference schools:  Washington (#13), Utah (#14), Washington State (#23)

Support was also given to Arizona, Arizona State, and Southern California.

Meanwhile, the Ducks were ranked #13 in the USA Today/Amway-Coaches poll that was released back on August 1 (Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ohio State are in the top five there).

No support for the Oregon State Beavers in either poll.

Jack Whitaker, Legendary CBS Sportscaster Who Called First Super Bowl, Secretariat's Triple Crown Run, R.I.P.

Jack Whitaker, the long-time veteran television sportscaster (CBS, ABC) who worked the inaugural Super Bowl in 1967 for the "Tiffany Network" and who anchored that CBS's coverage of the 1973 Triple Crown horse races, with Secretariat becoming the first horse in 25 years to earn that honor, passed away on Sunday at age 95.

Mr. Whitaker, a Philadelphia native,  passed away at Devon, Pennsylvania of natural causes.

Deva Vu All Over: Five Stripes Repeat MLS Cup Performance Against Timbers

At Portland, Oregon:

In the lone Sunday Major League Soccer contest, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez (14') and Josef Martinez (46'; he extended his MLS record for scoring at least one goal in consecutive games to eleven) each scored once as Atlanta United repeated their MLS Cup Final performance from last December by blanking the Portland Timbers 2-0 on the road.

The Timbers will try to turn thing around at home this coming Friday when they host the Seattle Sounders in a Cascadia Cup clash at 7:00 PM Pacific Time (ESPN).

Timbers Hold Off Fire To Climb Into Playoff Places

At Portland, Oregon:

In Wednesday Major League Soccer play, Brian Fernandez scored twice (21', 88') and Jorge Moreira once (11') as the Portland Timbers held off the visiting Chicago Fire 3-2 to climb up to seventh place in the Western Conference standings with ten regular-season games remaining.

Nemanja Nikolic (74') and C.J. Sapong (90'+2) each scored once for the Fire, who were reduced to ten men in the 30th minute as Aleksander Katai was ejected via a red card.

Next up for the Timbers, their ten-game homestand will continue on Sunday night as they host Atlanta United in a rematch of last year's MLS Cup Final (7:00 PM Pacific Time, FS1).

Riders Top On Als In Weather-Shortened Game In Montreal

At Montreal:

A pair of defensive touchdowns on Friday lifted the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-3) to their fourth successive Canadian Football League victory, 17-10 on the road over the Montreal Alouettes (3-4) in a weather-shortened game.

The contest was called early in the third quarter due to severe weather issues as lightning in the Montreal area delayed the game for over an hour.

Timbers Fall To Loons In Open Cup Semifinal

At St. Paul, Minnesota:

Darwin Quintero (PK-22') and Mason Toye (64') each scored once as Minnesota United held off the visiting Portland Timbers 2-1 in a semifinal match in the US Open Cup.

Brian Fernandez scored the lone Timbers goal in the opening minute of first-half stoppage time.

The Loons will take on Atlanta United on the road on August 27 for the Open Cup championship and a berth in next year's CONCACAF Champions League.

As for the Timbers, they will return to Major League Soccer action as they open up a ten-game home stand by taking on the Vancouver Whitecaps in a Cascadia Cup clash on Saturday at 8:00 PM Pacific Time (Timbers TV Network via KPDX-TV, Portland-Vancouver; ESPN+).

Following a video review that showed defenseman Larrys Mabiala committed a handball fowl in his team's penalty area, Ethan Finlay converted his freshly-awarded penalty kick in the second minute of second-half stoppage time on Sunday as Minnesota United defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0 in Major League Soccer action.

The Timbers will face the Loons again this coming Wednesday in a US Open Cup semifinal match at Allianz Field in St. Paul (5:00 PM Pacific Time, ESPN+) before opening a ten-match MLS homestand this coming Saturday as they host the Vancouver Whitecaps in a Cascadia Cup clash (8:00 PM Pacific Time, Timbers TV Network via KPDX, Portland-Vancouver, ESPN+).
