Won't Be Back With Any More Stuff: Farewell To Chuckie Baby

Chuck Barris, a songwriter-turned-game show impresario who created and/or developed The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game before going on to become the iconic host of the original version of The Gong Show, passed away on Tuesday at his Palisades, New York home at age 87.

The Philadelphia native may have had his first taste of fame in 1962 with a song he penned entitled "Palisades Park," which became a big hit for Freddy Cannon.

This was while Mr. Barris was working at ABC as its' investigator in the wake of the Payola scandal of the late 1950s and early 1960s, in an effort to keep American Bandstand host Dick Clark (who had to divest himself of his recording and song publishing interests to keep his job as Bandstand emcee) in line.

In 1965, Chuck came up with The Dating Game, in which a bachelor or bachelorette would pick a date amongst three unseen members of the opposite sex by asking the candidates at times embarrassing  questions.

The following year, he helped developed the next step, known as The Newlywed Game, which, more or least, followed the same premise.

But television viewers got to really know Chuck when he stepped in at the last second to become the master of ceremonies of The Gong Show, which debut on NBC in June of 1976 and ran for two years.  In 1977, after one season in syndication, he replaced Gary Owens as host of the nighttime version, which lasted until 1980, when Chuck ended production of all his game shows.

This program, seen as a parody of such programs as The Original Amateur Hour, featured some very good acts, some mediocre acts, and some bad----and even wretched---acts.

Chuck Berry, Rock 'N' Roll's Poet Laureate, R.I.P.

Legendary singer, guitarist, and songwriter Chuck Berry, the artist who helped defined Rock 'n' Roll music, passed away on Saturday from pneumonia at age 90.

The St. Charles, Missouri Police Department confirmed Mr. Berry's passing on its' Facebook page after attempts to save his life proved futile.

It appeared that in writting all of those hit songs, Chuck had a better feel of what teenagers in the mid and late 1950s wanted than the teenagers themselves.

Chuck will be remembered for such hits as "Maybelline" (1955), "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "School Day" (1957), "Rock 'N' Roll Music" (1957), "Sweet Little Sixteen" (1958), and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958), amongst many, many others.

NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament: UC Davis, Southern Cal Advance To Round of 16

Two games were contested at the University of Dayton Arena in (where else?) Dayton, Ohio as the First Four portion of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament came to a close.

In the opener, Chima Moneke scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the UC Davis Aggies (23-12), in their NCAA Tourney debut, overcame 18 turnovers and overcame the North Carolina-Central Eagles (25-9) 67-63.

The Aggies, as a #16 seed, will face top-seeded Kansas in a Midwest Regional contest on Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma

In the nightcap, Bennie Boatwright scored a career-high 24 points as the Southern California Trojans (25-9) overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to knock off the Providence Friars (20-13) 75-71 as the Trojans avenged their defeat in last year's opening round to the Big East Conference school.

Southern Cal, as a #11 seed,  will take on sixth-seeded Southern Methodist in a East Regional match on Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
