NCAA West: Mountaineers, Zags, Zona, Musketeers Advance To Sweet Sixteen

The Round of 32 in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament commenced on Saturday with four of them contested in the West Region.

At Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, Utah:

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 20 points as the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (34-1) ended eighth-seeded Northwestern's inaugural NCAA Tourney run with a 79-73 victory.

Bryant McIntosh paced the Wildcats (24-12) with 20 points.


Lauri Markkanen scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the second-seeded Arizona Wildcats (32-4) came back from a one-point halftime deficit and held off the seventh-seeded Saint Mary's Gaels (29-5) 69-60.

Jock Landale paced the Gaels with 19 points while grabbing 11 rebounds.


At KeyBank Center, Buffalo, New York:

Jevon Carter scored 24 points as the fourth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (28-8) became the first team to lock up a berth in the Sweet Sixteen by holding off the fifth-seeded Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (26-10) 83-71.

Bonzie Colson paced Notre Dame with 27 points.



At Amway Arena, Orlando, Florida:

Trevor Bluiett scored 29 points as the eleventh-seeded Xavier Musketeers (23-13) shiskabobbed the third-seeded Florida State Seminoles (26-9) 91-66.

Dwayne Bacon topped FSU with 20 points but missed all five three-point attempts.
