Gino Marchetti, Defensive Star On Colts' 1958 and 1959 NFL Title Teams, R.I.P.

Gino Marchetti, the Hall of Fame defensive end who was a key member of the Baltimore Colts' 1958 and 1959 NFL championship teams, passed away on Monday at age 93.

Mr. Marchetti played 14 years of NFL ball, beginning with the ill-fated 1952 Dallas Texans, before joining the newly re-established Colts in 1953.

Along with fellow defensive linemen Art Donovan, Eugene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb, and Don Joyce, Gino was a member of feared defensive line that helped the Colts win back-to-back NFL titles in 1958 and 1959 (defeating the New York Giants in both of those title games).

Gino was selected to eleven Pro Bowls and was named the NFL's top defensive end of the league's first half-century.

He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972.

NBA Playoffs: Bucks Level Series With Celtics At 1-1; Warriors Now Up 2-0 On Rockets

The NBA Playoffs continued on Tuesday with two games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Milwaukee:

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks squared their conference semifinal series at a game apiece following their 123-102 home beatdown of the Boston Celtics.

Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe added 28 and 21 points respectively to the Bucks' coffers.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Oakland, California:

Kevin Durant scored 29 points while Klay Thompson added 21 and Stephen Curry 20 as the Golden State Warriors, with all five starters scoring 15 or more points apiece, defeated the visiting Houston Rockets 115-109 to stretch their conference semifinal series lead to two games to none.

James Harden led the Rockets (who had six players scoring in double figures) with 29 points.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Blue Jackets, Sharks Take 2-1 Series Advantages

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continued on Tuesday with two games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Columbus, Ohio:

Boone Jenner and Matt Duchene (power play) each scored once while Sergei Bobrovsky saved 36 of 37 shots as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the visiting Boston Bruins 2-1 in game three of the conference semifinal series, which the Blue Jackets now lead two games to one.



WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Denver:

Logan Couture produced his first career playoff hat trick (one of the goals was an empty netter) as the San Jose Sharks doubled up the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 on the road in game three of their conference semifinal series, which the Sharks now lead two games to one.

NBA Playoffs: 76ers Square Series With Raptors At 1-1; Nuggets Top Blazers In Series Opener

Two games were contested in the NBA Playoffs on Monday.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Toronto:

Jimmy Butler scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers, with five players scoring in double figures,  leveled their conference semifinal series with the Toronto Raptors at a game apiece following their 94-89 game-two road victory.

Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam, and Kyle Lowry scored 35, 21, and 20 points respectively to pace the Raptors.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Denver:

Nikola Jokic scored 37 points (while grabbing nine rebounds) while Jamal Murray added 23 (to go with his eight assists) as the Denver Nuggets held off the visiting Portland Trail Blazers 121-113 in the opening contest of their conference semifinal series.

Damian Lillard scored 39 points while Enes Kanter added 26 to pace the Blazers.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Blues Top Stars In Big D To Gain 2-1 Series Lead

At Dallas:

In the lone Monday Stanley Cup Playoff contest, Jaden Schwartz, Tyler Bozak, Alex Pietrangelo, and Pat Maroon each scored once as the St. Louis Blues doubled up the Dallas Stars 4-2 on the road in game three of their Western Conference semifinal series to take a two-games-to-one lead.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Canes Knock Off Islanders Again In Brooklyn For 2-0 Series Lead; Avalanche Square Series With Sharks At 1-1

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continued on Sunday with two games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Brooklyn, New York:

Third-period goals from Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreitter, scored 48 seconds apart, lifted the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 game-two road win over the New York Islanders to extend their conference semifinal series lead to two games to none.



WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At San Jose, California:

Nathan MacKinnon scored the winning goal with 62 seconds remaining in regulation as the Colorado Avalanche leveled their conference semifinal series with the San Jose Sharks at one game apiece after their 4-3 game-two road triumph.

NBA Playoffs: Celtics Dominate Bucks In Series Opener; Warriors Hold Off Rockets In West Semi Opener

The NBA Playoffs continued on Sunday with two games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Milwaukee:

Kyrie Irving scored 26 points (while dishing out 11 assists) while Al Horford added 20 (to go with his 11 rebounds) as the Boston Celtics took care of the Milwaukee Bucks 112-90 on the road in game one of their conference semifinal series.

Giannis Antetokounmpo paced the Bucks with 22 points while grabbing eight rebounds.



WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Oakland, California:

Kevin Durant scored 35 points as the Golden State Warriors held off the visiting Houston Rockets 104-100 in the opening match of their conference semifinal series.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continued on Saturday with two games.

At St. Louis:

In the second game of their conference semifinal series, Roope Hintz scored twice (once on an empty netter) as the Dallas Stars defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-2 on the road to square the series at one game apiece.



EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Boston:

Matt Duchene scored the game-winning power-play goal at 3:42 of overtime as the Columbus Blue Jackets leveled their conference semifinal series with the Boston Bruins at one game apiece following their 3-2 game-two road victory.

In the opening contest of the playoffs' second round, Kawhi Leonard scored 45 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Pascal Siakam added 29 points as the Toronto Raptors downed the visiting Philadelphia 76ers 108-95 in game one of their conference semifinal series.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Denver:

In the final contest of the playoffs' opening round, Jamal Murray scored 23 points while Nikola Jokic contributed a triple double (21 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists) as the Denver Nuggets held off the visiting San Antonio Spurs 90-86 in the seventh and deciding game of their conference quarterfinal series, which the Nuggets won, four games to three.

Rudy Gay came off the bench to top the Spurs with 21 points.

The Nuggets will host the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday in the opening contest of a conference semifinal series.

Timbers Upend Reds In Toronto

At Toronto:

Goals from Bill Tuiloma (22') and Jeremy Ebobisse (70') enabled the Portland Timbers to knock off Toronto FC 2-1 on the road in Saturday Major League Soccer action.

Diego Valeri assisted on both Portland goals

Jonathan Osorio scored for the Reds in the 20th minute.

The Timbers, now riding a two-game winning streak, will continue on their season-opening road swing with an encounter with Real Salt Lake, next Saturday at 6:00 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest and ESPN+)

Eryk Williamson scored twice (66', 77') and Ryan Sierakowski once (68') as Portland Timbers 2 gained a 3-3 Friday USL Championship draw with New Mexico United.

John Havlicek, Boston Celtics Legend, R.I.P.

John Havlicek, one of the greatest players in Boston Celtics (and NBA) history, passed away on Thursday at age 79.

Mr. Havlicek played all 16 NBA seasons with the Celtics and was a part of eight league championship squads (1963-66, 1968-69, 1974, 1976).

"Hondo," as John was nicknamed, had been suffering from Parkinson's disease.

John played his college ball at Ohio State, which won an NCAA national title in 1960.

John would best be known for a great defensive play in the seventh and deciding game of the 1965 Eastern Division final against the Philadelphia 76ers, as he intercepted a pass from the Sixers' from Hal Greer to Chet Walker, then passed the ball to Sam Jones to seal the game-seven victory .

The Celtics then defeated the Los Angeles Lakers for their eighth straight NBA crown.

NBA Playoffs: Warriors Finish Off Clippers In LA, Get Rockets Next

At Los Angeles:

In the lone Friday NBA playoff contest, Kevin Durant scored a playoff-career-high 50 points while Stephen Curry added 24 as the Golden State Warriors downed the Los Angeles Clippers 129-110 on the road in game six of their Western Conference quarterfinal series, which the Warriors won four games to two.

Draymond Green registered a triple double (16 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists) to help the Warriors' cause.

Danilo Gallinari and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 29 and 22 points respectively to pace the Clippers.

The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs commenced on Thursday with two games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Boston:

Charlie Coyle scored the game-tying goal in the third period to force overtime, 5:15 into which he scored the game winner as the Boston Bruins knocked off the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in the opening contest of their conference semifinal series.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At St. Louis:


Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice (once on the power play) as the St. Louis Blues held off the visiting Dallas Stars 3-2 in game one of their conference semifinal series.

NBA Playoffs: Spurs Knock Off Nuggets, Force Game Seven In Denver

At San Antonio, Texas:

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 26 points (while grabbing ten rebounds) while Demar DeRozan added 25 on Thursday night as the San Antonio Spurs downed the visiting Denver Nuggets 120-103 to square their NBA conference quarterfinal playoff series at three games apiece.

Nikola Jokic topped the Nuggets with 43 points while grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. 

The series will be decided in Denver on Saturday with the winner to face the Portland Trail Blazers in a conference semifinal series.

NBA Playoffs: Rockets Close Out Jazz; Clippers Force Game Six With Warriors After Victory In Oakland

Two games were contested on Wednesday as the NBA Playoffs continued.

At Houston:

James Harden scored 26 points as the Houston Rockets defeated the visiting Utah Jazz 100-93 in game five of their conference quarterfinal series.

The Rockets, who won the series four games to one, now await the winner of the Golden State-Los Angeles series.

At Oakland, California:

Lou Williams scored 33 points and dished out ten assists coming off the bench as the Los Angeles Clippers knocked off the Golden State Warriors 129-121 in game five of their conference quarterfinal series.

Danilo Gallinari added 26 points while Montrezl Harrell contributed 24 to the Clippers' coffers.

Kevin Durant scored 45 points while Stephen Curry added 24 and Klay Thompson 22 to lead the Warriors, who still lead the series three games to two and can close out the Clippers with a game-six victory on Los Angeles on Friday.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Canes Oust Champs In 2 OT; Get Islanders Next

At Washington:

In Wednesday's finale of the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Brock McGinn scored the winning goal at 11:05 of the second overtime as the Carolina Hurricanes ousted the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals 4-3 in the seventh and deciding game of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

The Hurricanes will travel to Brooklyn for Friday's opening game of their conference semifinal series with the New York Islanders.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Bruins, Sharks Win Game Sevens To Advance

Two opening-round Stanley Cup Playoff were contested on Tuesday with both games telecast over NBCSN.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Boston:

Joakim Nordstrom, Marcus Johansson, Sean Kuraly each scored once while Charlie Coyle and Patrice Bergeron each notched an empty netter as the Boston Bruins, with Tuukka Rask saving 32 of 33 shots, dominated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 in game seven of their conference quarterfinal series as the Bruins took the series four games to three, leaving no Canadian clubs left in this year's playoffs.

The Bruins will open their conference semifinal series with the Columbus Blue Jackets at home on Thursday night.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At San Jose, California:

Logan Couture scored twice while Tomas Hertl and Kevin Labanc each scored once, all during a single third-period power play, then Barclay Goodrow scored the game (and series) winner at 18:19 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks erased a 3-0 third period deficit and ultimately defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 5-4 in game seven of their opening-round series as the Sharks battled back from a three-games-to-one deficit to win the series four games to three.

San Jose will host the Colorado Rapids in the opening game of their conference semifinal series on Friday.

Four games were contested in the NBA Playoffs on Tuesday.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Toronto:

Kawhi Leonard scored 27 points while Pascal Saikam added 24 as the Toronto Raptors downed the visiting Orlando Magic 115-96 in game five of their conference quarterfinal series, which the Raptors won four games to one.

At Philadelphia:

Joel Embiid scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers closed out their series with the Brooklyn with a 122-100 triumph in game five at home as the Sixers took the series four games to one.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Denver:

Jamal Murray scored 23 points as the Denver Nuggets took a three-games-to-two conference quarterfinal series lead after their 108-90 game five home victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

The Nuggets can close out the series with a game-six win in San Antonio on Thursday.

At Portland, Oregon:

Damian Lillard, who set a franchise playoff record by scoring 50 points, sank the game-winning three-point bucket at the buzzer as the Portland Trail Blazers, who trailed by 15 points at the start of the fourth quarter, upended the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder 118-115 in game five of their quarterfinal series, which the Blazers won four games to one.

Paul George scored 36 points (and grabbed nine rebounds) while Russell Westbrook added 29 (to go with his 14 assists and 11 rebounds) to pace the Thunder.

Portland will take on the winner of the Denver-San Antonio series, which the Nuggets lead three games to two.

NBA Playoffs: Bucks Complete Sweep Of Pistons; Jazz Avoid Elimination By Beating Rockets

Two games were contested as the NBA Playoffs continue.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Detroit:

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 41 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks finished off the visiting Detroit Pistons 127-104 in game four of their conference quarterfinal series as they won their first playoff series since 2001 and swept a best-of-seven playoff series for the first time since 1983.

Reggie Jackson (not that one) and Blake Griffin scored 26 and 22 points respectively for the Pistons, who have now dropped an NBA record 14 straight postseason games.

The Bucks will take on the Boston Celtics in a conference semifinal series.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Salt Lake City, Utah:

Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points while Jae Crowder added 23 as the Utah Jazz avoided elimination by knocking off the visiting Houston Rockets 107-91.

James Harden scored 30 points while Chris Paul added 23 (to go with his eight rebounds and seven assists) to lead the Rockets, who still lead the series three games to one.

Houston can still knock out the Jazz with a game-five victory at home on Wednesday.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Stars Knock Out Preds In OT, Get Blues Next; Hurricanes Top Caps To Force Game Seven

Two games were contested in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Raleigh, North Carolina:

Warren Foegele, Teuvo Teravainen, Jordan Staal, Justin Williams, and Dougie Hamilton (empty net) each scored once as the Carolina Hurricanes overpowered the visiting Washington Capitals 5-2 in game six of their conference quarterfinal series, now squared at three games apiece.

The series is set to be decided in Washington on Wednesday.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Dallas:

John Klingberg scored the winning goal at 17:02 of overtime while Ben Bishop saved 47 of 48 shots as the Dallas Stars defeated the visiting Nashville Predators 2-1 in game six of their opening-round series, which the Stars won four games to two.

The Stars will take on the St. Louis Blues in a conference semifinal series.

In the longest game of the playoffs thus far, Tomas Hertl scored the winning shorthanded goal at 11:17 of the second overtime period while Martin Jones saved a career-high 58 (of 59) shots as the San Jose Sharks upended the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 on the road in game six of their opening-round series.

The series, now deadlocked at three games apiece, will be decided in San Jose on Tuesday.

The winner will face the Colorado Avalanche in the conference semifinals.

NBA Playoffs: Celtics Finish Off Pacers; Raptors, Warriors, Blazers All One Win Away From Finishing Off Respective Series Opponents

Four games were contested in the NBA Playoffs on Sunday.

At Indianapolis:

Gordon Hayward came off the bench to score 20 points as the Boston Celtics, with seven players scoring in double figures, held off the Indiana Pacers 110-106 on the road in game four to complete a four-game sweep of their conference quarterfinal series.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 22 points while Tyreke Evans added 21 to pace the Pacers.

At Orlando, Florida:

Kawhi Leonard scored 34 points as the Toronto Raptors dominated the Orlando Magic 107-85 on the road in game four of their opening-round series.

Aaron Gordon topped the Magic with 25 points.

The Raptors, who now lead three games to one, can close out the series with a game-five victory back home in Toronto on Tuesday.

At Los Angeles:

Kevin Durant scored 33 points while Klay Thompson added 32 as the Golden State Warriors downed the Los Angeles Clippers 113-105 on the road in game five of their conference quarterfinal series, which the Warriors now lead three games to one.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander top the Clippers with 25 points.

The Warriors can lock up the series with a game-five win back home in Oakland on Wednesday. 

At Oklahoma City:

C.J. McCollum scored 27 points while Damian Lillard added 24 (while dishing out eight assists) as the Portland Trail Blazers got the measure of the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-98 on the road in game four of their conference quarterfinal series.

Paul George paced the Thunder with 32 points while grabbing ten rebounds.

The Blazers can close out the series with a game-five win back home in Portland on Tuesday.

T2 Bounce Back For Home Draw With Switchbacks

At Portland, Oregon:

In Saturday USL Championship action, Foster Langsdorf scored twice (63', 86') as Portland Timbers 2 came back from two one-goal deficits for a 2-2 home draw with the Colorado Springs Switchbacks.

Jordan Burt (PK-18') and Jordan Schwitzer (84') each scored once for the Switchbacks.

Next up for T2, a road encounter with New Mexico United this coming Friday at 7:30 PM Pacific Time, to be streamed live over ESPN+.

Timbers Bounce Crew For First Win

At Columbus, Ohio:

Larrys Mabiala (31'), Jeremy Ebobisse (35'), and Jorge Moreira (90'+1) each scored once and Sebastian Blanco assisted twice on Saturday as the Portland Timbers downed the Columbus Crew 3-1 for their first Major League Soccer victory of the season.

Pedro Santos scored the lone Columbus goal in the 69th minute.

The Timbers will next face Toronto FC on the road on Saturday at 12:00 Noon Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest; streamed live on ESPN+).

Alexander Radulov and Jason Dickinson each scored twice as the Dallas Stars upended the Nashville Predators 5-3 on the road in game five of their conference quarterfinal series.

The Stars can close out the series, which they now lead three games to two, with a home victory back in Big D on Monday.

At St. Louis:

Jaden Schwartz delivered a hat trick (with one of the goals scored on the power play) as the St. Louis Blues held off the visiting Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in game six of their conference quarterfinal series (the first win by a home club in the series) and finished off the Jets four games to two.

Nicklas Backstrom scored twice (once on the power play) while Braden Holtby stopped all 30 shots as the Washington Capitals (who scored three power-play goals altogether) crowned the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 6-0 in the fifth game of their conference quarterfinal series.

The Caps, who now lead three games to two, can close out the series on Monday with a game-six victory in Raleigh.

Joel Embiid scored 31 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Brooklyn Nets 112-108 in game four of their conference quarterfinal series.

Tobias Harris added 24 points and eight rebounds to the Sixers' coffers.

Caris LeVert scored 25 points while D'Angelo Russell and Jarrett Allen each added 21 to pace the Nets.

The 76ers can close out the series, which they now lead three games to one, with a game-five victory back home in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

At Detroit:

NBA Playoffs: Celtics On Cusp Of Ousting Pacers; Raptors Take 2-1 Series Lead Over Magic; Thunder Outlast Blazers To Cut Portland Series Advantage To 2-1

The NBA Playoffs continued on Friday with three games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Orlando, Florida:

Pascal Siakam scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Toronto Raptors held off the visiting Orlando Magic 98-93 in game three of their conference quarterfinal series to take a two-games-to-one series advantage.

Terrence Ross came off the bench to top the Magic with 24 points while Nikola Vucevic added 22 to go with his 14 rebounds.

At Indianapolis:

Jaylen Brown scored 23 points as the Boston Celtics, with five players scoring in double figures, defeated the Indiana Pacers 104-96 on the road in game three of their opening-round series, despite the fact that the hosts had seven players (led by Tyreke Evans' 19 points) scoring in double figures.

The Celtics, who lead the series three games to none, can finish off the Pacers with a game-four victory in Indianapolis on Sunday.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Oklahoma City:

Russell Westbrook scored 33 points (while dishing out eleven assists) while Paul George added 22 as the Oklahoma City Thunder proved too much for the visiting Portland Trail Blazers by taking game three of their conference quarterfinal series 120-108.

Damian Lillard scored 32 points while C.J. McCollum added 21 to pace the Blazers, who still lead the series two games to one.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Avalanche Finish Dousing Of Flames To Advance; Maple Leafs One Win Away From Ousting Bruins

The Stanley Cup Playoffs resumed on Friday with two games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Boston:

Third-period goals from Auston Matthews and Kasperi Kapanen as well as a 28-save performance from Frederik Andersen carried the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 game-five road victory over the Boston Bruins.

The Maple Leafs, who lead the conference quarterfinal series three games to two, can advance out of the first round for the first time since 2004 by finishing of the Bruins back home in Toronto in game six on Sunday.



WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Calgary, Alberta:

Mikko Rantanen and Colin Wilson scored twice (once each on the power play) as the Colorado Avalanche doused the Calgary Flames 5-1 on the road in game five and won their conference quarterfinal series four games to one.

The Avalanche will take on the Vegas-San Jose series winner in the conference semifinals (the Golden Knights currently lead their series three games to two).

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Hurricanes Top Caps To Square Series At 2-2; Blues Score Late To Take 3-2 Series Lead Over Jets; Sharks Stay Alive By Topping Knights

Three games were contested in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Thursday.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Raleigh, North Carolina:

Teuvo Teravainen scored the winning goal with 28 seconds remaining as the Carolina Hurricanes leveled their conference quarterfinal series with the Washington Capitals at two games apiece after their 2-1 game-four home victory.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Winnipeg, Manitoba:

Ryan O'Reilly (power play), Brayden Schenn, and Jaden Schwartz (with 15 seconds remaining) each scored a third-period goal as the St. Louis Blues erased a two-goal deficit to upend the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on the road in the fifth game of their opening-round series.

The Blues, who lead the series three games to two, can finish off the Jets with a game-six win at home on Saturday.

The road team has won every game in this series thus far.

At San Jose, California:

Thomas Hertl scored twice (once on the power play) as the San Jose Sharks avoided elimination by dominating the visiting Vegas Golden Knights 5-2 in game two of their first-round series.

The Golden Knights, who still lead three games to two, can still close out the series with a game-six home victory in Las Vegas on Sunday.
