NCAA Midwest: Cavs, Cuse Advance To Elite Eight

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's Sweet Sixteen concluded on Friday with four games, two of them in the Midwest Regional, both at Chicago's United Center.

In the opener, Anthony Gill scored a season-high 23 while grabbing nine rebounds as the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers (29-7) downed the fourth-seeded Iowa State Cyclones (23-12) 84-71 to advance to their first Elite Eight since 1995.

Georges Niang paced the Cyclones with 30 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

In the nightcap, Michael Gbinije, who scored 20 points, scored the go-ahead layup with 22 seconds remaining as the tenth-seeded Syracuse Orangemen (22-13) overtook eleventh-seeded Gonzaga (28-8) 63-60.

Kyle Wiltjer paced the Bulldogs with 23 points while Domantas Sabonis added 19 to go with his 17 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Virginia and Syracuse will meet in an all-ACC Midwest Regional final at 3:09 PM Pacific Time on Sunday (TBS)
