NCAA Midwest: Cavs, Butler, Cyclones, UALR, Utes, Zags Advance To Round of 32

Six games were played in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's Midwest Regional on Thursday.

At Raleigh, North Carolina:

Two games were contested at the PNC Arena.

In the opening contest, Anthony Gill scored 19 points as the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers (28-6) made roughshod of the sixteenth-seeded Hampton Pirates (20-11) 81-45.

In the nightcap, Kellen Dunham scored 23 points as the #9-seeded Butler Bulldogs (22-10) knocked off the #8-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders (19-13) 71-61.

At Denver:

Four games were played at the Pepsi Center.

In the opener, Georges Niang scored 28 points and Monte Morris added 20 as the fourth-seeded Iowa State Cyclones (22-11), with all five starters scoring in double figures, blew past the #13-seeded Iona Gaels (22-11) 94-81.

The Gaels were paced by A. J. English and Jordan Washington who scored 28 and 26 points respectively.

In game two, Josh Hagins celebrated his 22nd birthday by scoring 31 points as the #12-seeded Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans (30-4), who trailed by 13 points with 3:33 left in regulation, stormed back and knocked off the fifth-seeded Purdue Boilermakers (26-9) 85-83 in double overtime.

Vince Edwards paced the Boilers with 24 points while grabbing 13 rebounds.

In game three, Lorenzo Bonham scored 17 points while Jakob Poeltl (who grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds), Brandon Taylor, and Jordan Loveridge each added 16 as the third-seeded Utah Runnin' Utes (27-8) held off the #14-seeded Fresno State Bulldogs (25-10) 80-69, despite 24 points from the Bulldogs' Marvelle Harris.

In the Thursday finale, a 21-point, 16 rebound performance from Domantas Sabonis carried the #11-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (27-7) to a 68-52 victory over the #6-seeded Seton Hall Pirates (25-9).
