Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Travis Etienne with 1:49 remaining in regulation as the defending national champion Clemson Tigers (#3 CFP; 14-0) overcame the second-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes (13-1) 29-23 in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Tigers' Nolan Turner intercepted a pass from OSU's Justin Fields in the end zone with 37 seconds remaining to seal the Clemson victory.

It will be a battle of Tigers on January 13 when Clemson will look for their third national title in four years as they will face LSU in the CFP national championship game in New Orleans (5:00 PM Pacific Time, ESPN).

In one of the wildest NFL games to be contested thus far this season, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed 26 of 35 passes for 349 yards and four touchdowns on Sunday while Robbie Gould kicked the game-winning 30-yard field goal as time expired as the San Francisco 49ers (11-2) nosed out the New Orleans Saints (10-3) 48-46 on the road, offsetting a six-touchdown performance (five through the air and one on the ground) for the Saint's veteran QB Drew Brees.

Niners wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders caught seven passes for 157 yards and a touchdown while also throwing for another score, to running back Raheem Mostert.

LSU, Buckeyes, Clemson, Sooners Finish In CFP Top Four And Will Take Part In Playoff; Ducks (Who Finish At #6) To Face Badgers In Rose Bowl

In the final College Football Playoff rankings that came out on Sunday, LSU jumped Ohio State to finish as the Playoff's top seeded team.

Clemson, at #3, and Oklahoma, at #4, will round out the CFP field.

Running back C.J. Verdell ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns on Friday as the Oregon Ducks (#13 CFP, AP, Coaches; 11-2) proved too much for the Utah Runnin' Utes (#5 CFP, AP, Coaches) as they ended Utah's shot at a College Football Berth 37-15 in the Pac-12 Conference's championship game and won themselves a berth in the upcoming Rose Bowl Game.

Matt Hauser scored a career-high 29 points on Friday night as the Portland State Vikings (4-5) defeated the visiting Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-8) 73-67.

Terrell Gomez scored 28 points on Wednesday night as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-7) ended the Portland Pilots' (6-2) five-game winning streak with 71-64 road victory.

Devils Can Coach

Things have not gone according to plan for New Jersey's NHL club, currently sitting in the Metropolitan Division basement.

The Devils dropped their opening game for interim coach Alain Nasreddine, 4-3 at home to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night.

The Devils, who have three number-one overall draft picks on their roster, have made the playoffs once (in 2018) since their most recent appearance in the Stanley Cup Final (in which they fell in six games to the Los Angeles Kings in 2012).

Panthers Can Coach

Defensive backs coach Perry Fewell will serve as Carolina's interim head coach.

The Panthers, after a 5-2 start, have dropped five straight games, including a defeat this past Sunday against the struggling Redskins.

Last year, after a 6-2 start, Carolina dropped seven straight contests to fall out of playoff contention.

In the final regular-season College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson, and Georgia stayed in their respective top-four positions.

Meanwhile, Utah climbed up a spot to #5.

The Oregon Ducks moved up a spot to #13 while Southern California came in at #22.

After their Saturday Iron-Bowl defeat at Auburn, Alabama fell seven spots to #12.

After close defeats at the hands of Gonzaga (in OT) and North Carolina in the Battle 4 Atlantis, the Oregon Ducks dropped two spots to #13 in the Associated Press men's college basketball poll that was released on Monday.

The Ducks fell four spots in the USA Today/Coaches poll to #14.

Despite respective starts at 7-1 and 6-1, neither Oregon State or Portland received any support in either poll (likewise 3-5 Portland State).
