Defensive Coordinator (and former Tampa Bay head coach) Raheem Morris has been named interim head coach.

General manager Thomas Dimitroff also got the ax as club president Rich McKay will handle control of Atlanta's football operations.

The Falcons still have not fully recovered from their Super Boal LI second-half collapse.

In another wild, bizarre NFL contest, Matt Ryan threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Julio Jones with two seconds remaining (after an earlier incompletion ruling was overturned on video review) as the Atlanta Falcons (5-9) knocked off the San Francisco 49ers (11-3) 29-22 on the road.

Even with the setback, the Niners, thanks to the Los Angeles Rams' lopsided defeat at Dallas, still locked up their first playoff berth since 2013.

Running back James White scored his third touchdown on Sunday night, a two-yard run in the series' first-ever overtime period as the New England Patriots erased a 25-point third-quarter deficit and upended the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in Super Bowl LI by scoring 31 unanswered points.

Quarterback Tom Brady, named the game's Most Valuable Player for a record fourth time, completed 43 of a Super-Bowl record 62 passes for a series-record 466 yards and two touchdowns, becoming the first quarterback to win five Super Bowls.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichik became the first head coach to win five Super Bowls as well as New England staged the biggest comeback in series history.

The 25-point deficit was the biggest ever to be overcome in Super Bowl history.

Running back Devonta Freeman ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 286 yards and two more scored on Sunday as the Atlanta Falcons (9-5) handed the banged-up San Francisco 49ers (1-13) their 13th consecutive defeat, 41-13 at home.

Blaine Gabbert Leads Niners Past Falcons

At Santa Clara, California:

The San Francisco 49ers (3-6) held off the visiting Atlanta Falcons (6-3) 17-16 on Sunday.  In his first start in a 49ers uniform, quarterback Blaine Gabbert threw two second-quarter touchdown passes, both to tight end Garrett Celek (one and eleven yards).

Niners Battle Back, Hold Off Pesky Falcons In Candlestick Park (Regular-Season) Finale, Clinch Playoff Berth; Still Can Win NFC West And #1 Playoff Seed

At San Francisco:

In the final regular-season contest at Candlestick Park on Monday night, linebacker Na Vorro Bowman ran back an interception 89 yards for a touchdown with 70 seconds remaining as the San Francisco 49ers (11-4) locked up their third consecutive playoff berth with a 34-24 home win over the Atlanta Falcons (4-11).

The 49ers can still win the NFC West Division title with a road win at Arizona, coupled with a Seattle loss at home to St. Louis.  Should these two things happen and Carolina loses (or ties) at Atlanta, the Niners can still claim top seed in the NFC playoffs.

At Atlanta:

Matt Ryan threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Harry Douglas while Matt Bryant made all three field goal attempts, including the game winner from 42 yards out with two seconds remaining as the Atlanta Falcons (3-1) came back from an early 14-point deficit to upend the visiting San Francisco 49ers (0-4) 16-14 in Sunday National Football League action.

Even with their best effort of the season to date, the Niners still could not pick up their first victory. 

Falcons Smash Niners On Road

Roddy White had a 90-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown and added a 31-yard reception for another score while running back Michael Turner ran for three scores as the Atlanta Falcons (3-1) ripped the San Francisco 49ers (3-2) apart on the road, 45-10 on Sunday in NFL play. The loss ended the Niners' five-game home winning streak.
