Timbers And Five Stripes Battle To 1-1 Draw In Atlanta As Portland's Unbeaten Run In MLS Play And All Competitions Stretch To 9 And 11 Respectively

At Atlanta:


The Portland Timbers gained a 1-1 Sunday Major League Soccer road draw with Atlanta United.


Larrys Mabiala put the Timbers ahead in the 32nd minute while Julian Gressel equalized in the 56th minute for the Five Stripes.


Portland's unbeaten run in league play and all competitions stretched to nine and eleven games respectively.


Portland's next league match is a Cascadia Cup clash in Seattle with the archrival Sounders this coming Saturday at 1:30 PM Pacific Time, to be televised live over the FOX Television Network.

The two-time former head football coach at Oregon State (as well as ex-head coach at Nebraska and the then-San Diego Chargers) was named on Thursday as head coach of the San Antonio entry in the new Alliance of American Football.

The AAF, with eight teams, is set to open its's inaugural season next February, the week after the Super Bowl.

Timbers Knock Out Visiting Galaxy In Open Cup Play, Advance To Quarterfinals

At Portland, Oregon:

In Friday's opening game of the Round of 16 of the US Open Cup tournament, Sebastian Blanco's goal in the 30th minute provided all the scoring as the Portland Timbers bested the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 in an all-Major League Soccer matchup.

The Timbers will pay a visit on the winner of this coming Wednesday's match between the Los Angeles Football Club and the USL's Sacramento Republic in a quarterfinal affair.

The Portland Timbers stretched their unbeaten run in Major League Soccer play to eight games (nine in all competitions) on Saturday night with a 0-0 home stalemate with Sporting Kansas City.

Timbers' goalkeeper Jeff Attinella produced Portland's fourth  shutout of the season with four saves.

Portland will host the Los Angeles Galaxy in US Open Cup Round of 16 play at 7:30 PM Pacific Time this coming Friday.

The Timbers' next MLS match is on the road against Atlanta United at 1:30 PM Pacific Time on Sunday, June 24 (FOX).

JUSTIFY LEADS WIRE-TO-WIRE IN WINNING 150TH BELMONT STAKES AND TRIPLE CROWN (BECOMING THE 13TH HORSE TO DO SO)

At Elmont, New York:
2018-6-9-justify-belmont-mike-smieth Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Justify (shown here) led wire-to-wire and won Saturday's 150th running of the Belmont Stakes and became the 13th horse to win the coveted Triple Crown.

Gronkowski finished second and Hofburg finished third.

Mike Smith, at age 52, became the oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown.

Trainer Bob Baffert won his second Triple Crown (to go with American Pharoah's 2015 triumph), becoming the second trainer to do so.

Justify became the second horse to go undefeated en route to the Triple Crown title (Seattle Slew, 1977).

WARRIORS COMPLETE SWEEP OF CAVALIERS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT NBA CROWN (THIRD IN FOUR YEARS); KD NAMED SERIES MVP

At Cleveland:
NBA: Finals-Golden State Warriors at Cleveland Cavaliers Stephen Curry scored 37 points on Friday as the Golden State Warriors completed a four-game sweep of the NBA Finals with a 108-85 road domination of the Cleveland Cavaliers, winning their second straight league title and their third in four years (and their sixth overall).  That's Steph here, shooting the ball against the Cavaliers' Larry Nance, Jr.

In what may have been the final game of his second stint with the Cavaliers, LeBron James topped Cleveland with 23 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out eight assists.

The Warriors' Kevin Durant, who scored 20 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out ten assists for a triple-double, was named the series' Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season.

Timbers To Host Galaxy In Open Cup's Sweet Sixteen

The Portland Timbers, as a result of Thursday's draw for the US Open Cup's Round of 16, will host the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday, June 15 at 8:00 PM Pacific Time.

Red Schoendienst, Oldest Living Baseball Hall Of Famer, R.I.P.

Baseball Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst, who spent 76 years in baseball----67 of them with the St. Louis Cardinals as player, coach, manager, and special assistant, passed away on Wednesday at age 95.

Mr. Schoendienst played on the Cardinals' 1946 World Series championship squad, was coach on St. Louis' 1964 World Series title team, then managed the Redbirds to the 1967 World Series championship.

Timbers Blank Quakes In Open Cup Play, Advance To Sweet Sixteen

At Portland, Oregon:

In Wednesday action from the fourth round of the US Open Cup Tournament, the Portland Timbers, with Jeremy Ebobisse (28') and Dairon Asprilla (66') producing the goalpower,  blanked the visiting San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 in an all-Major League Soccer affair.

The Timbers will play in the tournament's Round of 16.

Portland's next MLS match is on Saturday night at home against Sporting Kansas City (7:30 PM Pacific Time, ROOT Sports Northwest).

2018 NBA Finals: Warriors Down Cavs In Cleveland; Golden State One Win Away From NBA Title Repeat

At Cleveland:
NBA: Finals-Golden State Warriors at Cleveland Cavaliers Kevin Durant (shown here) scored 43 points and grabbed 13 rebounds (while dishing out seven assists) on Wednesday night as the Golden State Warriors, with six players scoring in double figures,  came back from down six points at halftime to outgun the Cleveland Cavaliers 110-102 on the road in the third game of the NBA Finals.

LeBron James scored 33 points, dished out 11 assists, and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers for his NBA Finals record tenth career triple-double.

Kevin Lowe scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the hosts.

The Warriors, who lead the series three games to none, can lock up their second straight NBA title (and third in four years----all as Cleveland's expense) by winning game four on Friday in Cleveland (6:00 PM Pacific, ABC).

No team has ever come back from a three-games-to-none deficit to win an NBA best-of-seven playoff series.

Dwight Clark, 49ers Wide Receiver Best Remembered For "The Catch," R.I.P.

Dwight Clark, the wide receiver whose touchdown catch (shown here) in the 1981 NFC Championship Game carried the San Francisco 49ers to their first Super Bowl appearance, passed away on Monday at age 61.

Mr. Clark had been suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Dwight played on the 49ers' first two Super Bowl title teams.

Stanley Cup Final: Caps Prove Too Much For Golden Knights; Washington One Victory Away From First Stanley Cup Title

At Washington:

T.J. Oshie, John Carlson, and Brett Connolly each scored a power-play goal while Evgeny Kuznetsov had four assists as the Washington Capitals spanked the visiting Vegas Golden Knights 6-2 in Monday's fourth game of the Stanley Cup Final.

Here' we see Tom Wilson (right), celebrating with the aforementioned Mr. Kuznetsov after he scored a first-period goal for the Caps.

The Capitals, who now lead the series three games to one, can wrap the first Stanley Cup championship in their 44-year history by finishing off the Golden Knights in Las Vegas in game five on Wednesday (5:00 PM Pacific Time, NBC).

NBA Finals: No Controversy This Time As Warriors Keep Cavaliers At Bay To Stretch Series Lead To 2-0

At Oakland, California:
NBA: Finals-Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors
In Sunday's second game of the NBA Finals, Stephen Curry (shown here) scored 33 points (27 of them on an NBA Finals record nine three-pointers) and dished out eight assists (while grabbing seven rebounds) as the Golden State Warriors extended their series lead to two games to none after their 122-103 game-two home win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson added 26 and 20 points respectively to the Warriors' coffers.  The former grabbed nine rebounds.

LeBron James paced the Cavaliers with 29 points, while dishing out 13 assists and grabbing nine rebounds.

Kevin Love added 20 points to the Cleveland coffers while grabbing ten rebounds.

T2 Cough Up Lead Late, Fall On Road To SAFC

At San Antonio, Texas:

Late goals from Omar Gordon (86') and Alex Bruce (90'+3) enabled San Antonio FC to come from behind to upend Portland Timbers 2 by a score of 2-1 in Saturday United Soccer League action.

Augustine Williams successfully converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute for the guests.

The next T2 match will be on the road against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros this coming Saturday at 5:30 PM Pacific Time, which will be streamed live over ESPN+.

Timbers Battle Galaxy To 1-1 Draw In Rose City

In Saturday Major League Soccer action, Diego Valeri successfully converted a penalty kick for the equalizer in the 57th minute, enabling the Portland Timbers to gain a 1-1 home draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy as their six-game winning streak ended but their unbeaten streak now reached seven games.

Chris Pontius scored for the Galaxy in the 20th minute.

Next up for the Timbers, a home contest on Wednesday in the fourth round of the US Open Cup against the San Jose Earthquakes at 7:30 PM Pacific Time.

Stanley Cup Final: Caps Top Knights To Take 2-1 Series Advantage

At Washington:

Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Devante Smith-Pelly each scored once on Saturday while Braden Holtby stopped 21 of 22 shots as the Washington Capitals defeated the visiting Vegas Golden Knights 3-1 in the third game of the Stanley Cup Final, which the Caps now lead two games to one.
