Deva Vu All Over: Five Stripes Repeat MLS Cup Performance Against Timbers

At Portland, Oregon:

In the lone Sunday Major League Soccer contest, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez (14') and Josef Martinez (46'; he extended his MLS record for scoring at least one goal in consecutive games to eleven) each scored once as Atlanta United repeated their MLS Cup Final performance from last December by blanking the Portland Timbers 2-0 on the road.

The Timbers will try to turn thing around at home this coming Friday when they host the Seattle Sounders in a Cascadia Cup clash at 7:00 PM Pacific Time (ESPN).

73,019 FANS WATCH FIVE STRIPES SMOTHER VISITING TIMBERS FOR MLS CUP TITLE

At Atlanta:

Josef Martinez (39') and Franco Escobar (54') each scored once while goalkeeper Brad Guzan came up with three saves to preserve the shutout in his first championship match for club and country as Atlanta United, in front of an MLS Cup Final record 73,019 fans, blanked the visiting Portland Timbers 2-0 to win their first league title in only their second season of existence.

It was the first championship in a major league by an Atlanta club since the Braves won the 1995 World Series.

Timbers And Five Stripes Battle To 1-1 Draw In Atlanta As Portland's Unbeaten Run In MLS Play And All Competitions Stretch To 9 And 11 Respectively

At Atlanta:


The Portland Timbers gained a 1-1 Sunday Major League Soccer road draw with Atlanta United.


Larrys Mabiala put the Timbers ahead in the 32nd minute while Julian Gressel equalized in the 56th minute for the Five Stripes.


Portland's unbeaten run in league play and all competitions stretched to nine and eleven games respectively.


Portland's next league match is a Cascadia Cup clash in Seattle with the archrival Sounders this coming Saturday at 1:30 PM Pacific Time, to be televised live over the FOX Television Network.

Timbers Settle For Home Draw With ATL United

At Portland, Oregon:

In Sunday Major League Soccer action, Liam Ridgewell's equalizer in the 50th minute lifted the Portland Timbers to a 1-1 home draw with Atlanta United in the first-ever regular-season meeting between the two clubs.

Julian Gressel scored his first career MLS goal for the visiting expansion club from the Peach City in the 46th minute.

The Timbers will play a visit to Montreal for a contest against the Impact this coming Saturday at 12:00 Noon Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest).
