Timbers Blank Reds, Halt Skid

At Portland, Oregon:

In Major League Soccer action on Wednesday night, Diego Chara (64') and David Guzman (83') each scored a second-half goal while Jeff Attinella registered his seventh save of the season as the Portland Timbers ended their four-game losing streak (their longest since 2012) with a 2-0 home blanking of Toronto FC.

The Timbers' next match is in Foxborough, Massachusetts as they face the New England Revolution on Saturday at 4:30 PM Pacific Time (broadcast over KPDX-TV in Portland and the rest of the Timbers television network; streamed live over ESPN+).

Own Goal Propels Sounders Past Timbers In Cascadia Cup Clash

At Portland, Oregon:

Julio Cascante's own goal in the 76th minute on Sunday propelled the Seattle Sounders to a 1-0 Major League Soccer----and Cascadia Cup----road win over the Portland Timbers.

Goalkeeper Stefan Frei made three saves to preserve the shutout and the Sounders' MLS-era franchise record seventh straight victory, which stretched their unbeaten run to 10 contests.

In stark contrast, after their 15-match unbeaten streak, the Timbers have dropped four straight games, having been outscored 10-2 (while surrendering eight unanswered goals in the process).

Seattle has climbed up to fifth place in the Western Conference standings while Portland fell to seventh place.

The Timbers next match is this coming Wednesday night at home against Toronto FC (7:30 PM Pacific Time, ROOT Sports Northwest).

Ducks Make #24 In AP Preseason Gridiron Poll

The Oregon Ducks made Monday's Associated Press preseason college football poll at #24.

The Ducks did get some support in the USA Today/Coaches rankings, where they would be ranked #27.

Alabama topped both polls.

The Oregon State Beavers, coming off their second winless conference season in the last three seasons (with seven wins total), are unranked and without support in both polls.

Farewell To The Queen Of Soul

Aretha Franklin, the iconic singer best remembered for such late 1960s hits as "Respect," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and "Chain of Fools," passed away on Thursday (41 years to the day after Elvis Presley's passing) at her Detroit home at age 76.

The cause of Miss Franklin's passing was advance pancreatic cancer.

Caps Snap Timbers Unbeaten Run In Rose City Cascadia Cup Clash

At Portland, Oregon:

Kei Kamara (14') and Cristian Techera (43') each scored once on Saturday as the Vancouver Whitecaps snapped the Portland Timbers' 15-game Major League Soccer unbeaten streak with a 2-1 Cascadia Cup road victory.

Diego Valeri converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute for the lone Timbers goal; an earlier PK try in the 40th minute by DV8 sailed wide left.

Portland will try to get back on the winning track on Wednesday as they make their first visit to Audi Field for a road match against DC United at 5:00 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest; streamed live on ESPN+).

Stan Mikita, Chicago Blackhawks Legend, R.I.P.

Stan Mikita, one of the most prominent names in Chicago Blackhawks history, passed away on Tuesday after a long illness at age 78.

Mr. Mikita played 22 National Hockey League seasons, all with the Blackhawks, and starred on Chicago's 1961 Stanley Cup championship team.

Stan still holds 'Hawks records for most games played, points, and assists, and trails only his longtime teammate and fellow Hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Hull in goals scored (he scored 541).
