Wayne Rooney Helps DC United Ambush Visiting Timbers
At Washington:
Wayne Rooney scored twice (43', 68') while Oniel Fisher (47') and Darren Mattocks (90'+1) each added a goal on Wednesday night as DC United dominated the visiting Portland Timbers 4-1 in Major League Soccer action, ruining the guests' Audi Field debut.
Samuel Armenteros scored for the Timbers in the 35th minute.
Portland will next pay a visit on Sporting Kansas City, Saturday at 5:30 PM Pacific Time (to be aired over the Timbers broadcasting network via KPDX, Portland; streamed live over ESPN+).

Timbers Thump DCU, Clinch Playoff Berth

In Sunday Major League Soccer action, Sebastian Blanco scored twice (60', 86') while Diego Valeri (PK-45'+4) and Alvas Powell (50') each tallied once as the Portland Timbers locked up a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs after their 4-0 home demolition of DC United.
Goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made five saves to preserve the shutout.
The Timbers will wrap up their regular-season schedule with a home Cascadia Cup clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps at 1:00 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest). A victory would give Portland the Western Conference regular-season title as well as the Cascadia Cup (for the first time in five years).

Timbers Wilt In Hot DC

In a Saturday Major League Soccer contest that saw its' opening kickoff delayed by an hour due to excessive heat in the nation's capital, Steve Birnbaum (7') and Luciano Acosta (29') each produced a goal as DC United blanked the visiting Portland Timbers 2-0.
The win snapped the hosts' six-match winless streak while the guests are still looking for their first league road win of 2016.
The Timbers will travel to Seattle for a nationally-televised Cascadia Cup clash against the Sounders, set for next Sunday evening at 6:30 PM (Fox Sports 1).
