Niners Hold Off Ravens, Snap Losing Skid
At Santa Clara, California:
Quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for a pair of touchdowns (76 yards to Torrey Smith, 21 yards to Quinton Patton) as the San Francisco 49ers (2-4) ended their four-game losing streak on Sunday with a 25-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens (1-5), who are off to the worst start in franchise history.

RAVENS HOLD OFF NINERS RALLY FOR SECOND SUPER BOWL TITLE; JOHN BESTS JIM IN HARBAUGH BOWL; RAY LEWIS GOES OUT A CHAMP; JOE FLACCO NAMED GAME MVP

Quarterback Joe Flacco, named the game's Most Valuable Player, completed 22 of 33 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns ( 13 yards to Anquan Boldin, one yard to Dennis Pitta, and 56 yards to Jacoby Jones---who later ran the opening kickoff of the second half for a Super Bowl-record 108 yards for a TD) as the Baltimore Ravens held off the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII, contested on Sunday at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. Justin Tucker kicked two fourth-quarter field goals (19 and 38) as the Ravens held off a furious comeback by the 49ers, which started after the game was suspended for 34 minutes early in the third quarter due to a power outage at the stadium.
San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree and ran 15 yards for another score (with a Frank Gore six-yard run for a TD sandwiched in-between). David Akers made all three of his field goal attempts (35, 27, and 34 yards).
As was the case back on Thanksgiving night in 2011, John Harbaugh's Ravens topped brother Jim's Niners.
This game marked the conclusion of Ravens' veteran linebacker Ray Lewis' 17-year NFL career (that's him, with the Vince Lombardi Trophy). He was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXV, which was played in Tampa in January, 2001, when the Ravens mauled the New York Giants.

Art Modell, Influential NFL Owner Who Owned Cleveland Browns Then Moved Them To Baltimore, R. I. P.
Art Modell, the longtime owner of the NFL's Cleveland Browns, who moved that franchise in Baltimore in 1996 and was transformed from a hero to a villain in the Ohio city while becoming a hero in the Maryland metropolis (and won Super Bowl XXXV as Ravens' owner), passed away early on Thursday in Baltimore from natural causes at age 87.
Besides owning the Browns, beginning in 1962 when he bought the club, Mr. Modell became influential in the National Football League acquisations of its first lucrative television contracts and was actually for a couple of years in the late 1960s the league president.
However, because of failed negotiations with the city of Cleveland on either making major improvements in Municipal Stadium or building a new stadium for his team, Art packed up his gridiron club and moved it to Baltimore in 1996, thus becoming a hero in Baltimore (where the team was renamed the Ravens) while becoming a villain in Clevleland (in which a new Browns team came into existance as well as a new stadium in 1999, with the original club's records and heritage). The Ravens won Super Bowl XXV, manhandling the New York Giants in January 2001.

John Tops Jim In Harbaugh Brothers Bowl As Ravens Register Nine Sacks As Baltimore Ends Niners' Win Streak At Eight

The Baltimore Ravens' (8-3) defense sacked San Francisco 49ers (9-2) quarterback Alex Smith nine times on Thursday night while Joe Flacco connected with tight end Dennis Pitta on a eight-yard pass for the game's lone touchdown and Billy Cundit made three field goals (39, 23, 39 yards) as the Ravens ended the visiting Niners' eight-game winning streak 16-6. Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh bested younger brother Jim in the first National Football League game in which two brothers squared against head other. Friday is Jim and John's parents' 50th wedding anniversary. Congrats to Jack and Jackie Harbaugh!

Colts Overpower Ravens
At Indianapolis:
Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes in the final two minutes of the first half---a 10-yarder to Austin Collie with 2:00 remaining, and a 3-yarder to Reggie Wayne with three seconds left---as the Indianapolis Colts overpowered the Baltimore Ravens 20-3 at home in an AFC divisional playoff game on Saturday.
The Colts will host next Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the winner or Tomorrow's New York Jets-San Diego Chargers contest.
With the Colts' win, Giants Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, has hosted its' last NFL game.

Ravens Smother Pats At Foxborough
The National Football League continued their playoffs with two Wild-Card games on Sunday.
At Foxborough, Massachusetts:
Running backs Ray Rice (159 yards) and Willis McGahee (62) each ran for two touchdowns on Sunday as the Baltimore Ravens manhandled the New England Patriots 33-14 on the road. This marked Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady's first home playoff defeat. Next for the Ravens, an AFC divisional playoff game this coming Saturday (5:00 PM Pacific Time/CBS) at Indianapolis.
The New York Jets will play in the other AFC semifinal next Sunday at San Diego (1:30 PM Pacific Time/CBS).
