WCC Tournament: Pilots Knock Off Gaels; Waves Hold Off Toreros In Defensive Battle; Zags and BYU Oust Bay Area Schools To Advance To Semis

The quarterfinal round of the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament took place on Saturday at the Orleans Arena in suburban Las Vegas.

In the opening contest, Kevin Bailey scored 16 points as the sixth-seeded Portland Pilots (17-14) snapped a four-game skid by knocking off the #3-seeded Saint Mary's Gaels (21-9) 69-52, snapping nine-game losing streak against the Gaels and defeating Saint Mary's for the first time in five WCC Tourney meetings.

Brad Waldow scored 25 points (and grabbed eight rebounds), nearly half of the cold-shooting (30.2% from the field) Gaels' total score.

In game two, Stacy Davis scored 19 points as the fourth-seeded Pepperdine Waves (18-12) battled back from a six-point deficit to upend the fifth-seeded San Diego Toreros (15-16) 50-47.

Game #3:

Przemek Karnowski scored 24 points while Kyle Wiltjer added 19 as the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (#7 in the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls; 30-2) overcame a two-point halftime deficit and overcame the eighth-seeded San Francisco Dons (14-18) 81-72. Mark Tollefsen and Tim Dersken each scored 21 points for the Dons, who once led 29-22 in the first half. 

In the finale, Tyler Haws scored 30 points (and grabbed nine rebounds) and hit the game-winning jumper from 17 feet out with 2.5 seconds remaining as the second-seeded BYU Cougars (24-8) defeated the #7-seeded Santa Clara Broncos (14-18) 78-76, depsite Jared Brownridge's 29 points and Brandon Clark's 23 for the Broncos.
