Chuck Bednarik, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who played 14 seasons (1949-62) as a center and linebacker who played on the Philadelphia Eagles' 1949 and 1960 NFL championship teams, and who is also remember on the clean and legal hit that knock Frank Gifford out of football for two years, passed away on Saturday morning after battling an illness at an assisted-living facility at age 89.
Mr. Bednarik played his entire career with the Eagles.
Chuck, an eight-time All-Pro who was elected and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967, was known for massive hits on whoever had the football on the opposing. His most famous was the hit in a 1960 game against the New York Giants that knock Hall of Fame halfback Frank Gifford out of football for 18 months.
