NCAA Tournament Opens with Highlanders and Bonnies Victories

At Dayton, Ohio:


The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament opened with two games contested as the University of Dayton Arena.


In the opener, Travis Fields, Jr. and Ed Polite, Jr. each scored 13 points as the Radford Highlanders (23-12) downed the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds (18-17) 71-61 for their first-ever NCAA Tourney victory.


The Blackbirds are now winless in seven trips to the Big Dance.


The Highlanders will be the #16 seed in the East Region and will face top-seeded Villanova in Pittsburgh on Thursday (3:50 PM Pacific Time, TNT).


In the nightcap, Courtney Stockard scored 26 points as St. Bonaventure (26-7) knocked off UCLA (21-12) 65-58.


Aaron Holiday paced the Bruins with 20 points.


The Bonnies, who picked up their first NCAA Tourney win since 1970, will be the #11 seed in the South Region and will face sixth-seeded Florida in Dallas on Thursday (6:57 PM Pacific Time, truTV).
