At Las Vegas:
The West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament commenced on Thursday with two games played at the Orleans Arena.
In the opener, Evan Payne scored 19 points as the Loyola Marymount Lions (13-18), who were seeded #10, upended the #7-seeded Portland Pilots (15-16) 67-64 as the Pilots, despite 18 points each from Thomas van der Mars (who grabbed 10 rebounds) and Bobby Sharp, turned the ball over 26 times, with the Lions scoring 30 points off the errors.
LMU will take on BYU in one quarterfinal match on Saturday.
In the nightcap, Jared Brownridge scored 20 points (converting four of eight three-point shots) as the ninth-seeded Santa Clara Broncos (14-18) defeated the eighth-seeded Pacific Tigers (15-15) 81-64.
The Broncos will battle top-seeded Gonzaga on Saturday.
