NCAA East: Cyclones Knock Off Tar Heels; Cavs Cruise Past Memphis

Two games were played in the East Region of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament as action in the third round came to a close.

At San Antonio:

DeAndre Kane capped off a 24 -point, 10-rebound, seven-assist performance with his game-winning layup with 1.6 seconds remaining as the third-seeded Iowa State Hawkeyes (28-7), playing minus the injured Georges Niang, upended the sixth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels (24-10) 85-83.

At Raleigh, North Carolina:

Joe Harris scored 16 points as the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers (30-6) shot 56% from the field and dominated the eighth-seeded Memphis Tigers (24-10) 78-60 to reach their first Sweet Sixteen since 1995.



Match-ups for Friday's regional semifinal contests at New York City:

#3 Iowa State vs. #7 Connecticut, 4:27 PM Pacific Time (TBS)

#1 Virginia vs. #4 Michigan State, 6:57 PM Pacific Time (TBS)

The Friday winners will take on each other next Sunday at New York's Madison Square Garden for a berth in the Final Four.
