Despite being idle this past weekend, the Oregon Ducks remained at #2 in both the Associated Press (with four first-place votes) and USA Today/Coaches (three first-place votes) Polls as released on Sunday, while Alabama remains on top on both polls.

With perhaps the residue from their season-opening home defeat against Eastern Washington still in evidence, the Oregon State Beavers, despite racking up their third straight win, an exciting comeback victory at San Diego State, still received no support in either poll.

Diego Valeri Pulls Through For Timbers

At Portland, Oregon:

In the lone Friday Major League Soccer contest, Diego Valeri scored the game's only goal in the 13th minute and Donovan Ricketts hung on for the shutout as the Portland Timbers defeated the Colorado Rapids 1-0 at home in a nationally-televised match.  The victory lifted Portland to third place in the Western Conference standings.

The next Timbers contest is on September 29 at home against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Ken Norton, Sr., Former Heavyweight Boxing Champ; Broke Muhammad Ali's Jaw In '73 Bout, R.I.P.

Ken Norton, Sr., a former heavyweight champion boxer best remembered for beating Muhammad Ali in a 1973 fight in which he broke Mr. Ali's jaw, passed away from heart failure on Wednesday at age 70.

Mr. Norton had been in ill health in recent years, as he had suffered a series of strokes.

It was in a 1973 bout in San Diego that Kenny broke Muhammad's jaw and handed the former (and future) champ only his second career defeat.

The twosome met again six months in a rematch that Mr. Ali won by split decision.

The third bout between Kenny and Muhammad, which took place at New York's Yankee Stadium in 1976, which Mr. Ali won by a narrow decision to keep his heavywight championship (which he had reclaimed two years earlier after he defeated George Foremen in Zaire).

After having won a heavyweight title elimination bout in 1977, Mr. Norton was declared World Boxing Council heavyweight champion in 1978 after Leon Spinks, who defeated Muhammad Ali early that year, wanted a rematch with Mr. Ali, instead of the WBC's mandatory challenger (Muhammad got the better of Leon in the rematch).  

Kenny's reign as WBC champ was brief before losing a brutal 15-round title bout to Larry Holmes on June 9, 1978 and never won the heavyweight title again.

Kenny's son, Ken Norton, Jr., was a talented collegiate linebacker at UCLA before embarking on a successful NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.  Ken, Jr. is now an assistant coach with the Seattle Seahawks.

Ducks Remain Ranked Second In Both Polls

After their lopsided home win over Tennessee, the Oregon Ducks maintained their #2 position (after Alabama) in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls.  The Ducks received one first-place vote in each poll, the only vote going for someone other than the Crimson Tide.

Despite a frightening neck injury to running back Storm Woods, the Oregon State Beavers (2-1 overall, 1-0 in Pac-12 play), with Sean Mannion completing 27 of 44 passes for 443 yards and five touchdowns, the last of them from six yards to Brandin Cooks in overtime, defeated the home-standing Utah Runnin' Utes (2-1, 0-1; they would be tied for 43rd in the USA Today/Coaches poll) 51-48 on Saturday night in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both schools.

Timbers Battle Back To Gain 1-1 Road Draw With Goats; Chivas USA Eliminated From Playoff Contention

Diego Valeri scored the equalizer in the 50th minute as the Portland Timbers gained a 1-1 Saturday Major League Soccer road draw with Chivas USA.  Bryan de la Fuente scored in the 23rd minute for the Goats, who were mathematically eliminated from MLS Cup playoff contention for the fourth straight year.

The Timbers host the Colorado Rapids this coming Friday in a nationally-televised match starting at 7:00 PM (NBCSN).

Quarterback Marcus Mariola threw for a career-high 456 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score as the #2-ranked (in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls) Oregon Ducks (3-0) mauled the visiting Tennessee Volunteers (2-1; they would be ranked 39th in the AP poll, 44th in the Coaches' poll) 59-14 on Saturday.

Don Nelson, Ozzie's Younger Brother, Writer For "The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet," R.I.P.

Don Nelson, the younger brother of Ozzie Nelson and a writer for the classic 1952-66 television sitcom series, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, passed away on Tuesday of an aortic aneurysm on Tuesday at his Studio City, California home at age 86.

Mr. Nelson had Parkinson's disease.

A jazz saxophonist who, for a brief time, worked in Ozzie's orchestra, Don was co-writer on his brother's family's lone feature-length film, 1952's "Here Come The Nelsons." The movie helped set the stage for the ABC Network TV series (itself a video version of a successful radio show), which launched that fall.

Don wound up outliving all four principal cast members; brother Ozzie (who passed away from liver cancer in 1975), nephew Rick, whose trademark catchphrase "I don't mess around, boy" was dreamed up by Uncle Don (plane crash, 1985), sister-in-law Harriet (1994), and older nephew David (2011).

Here's a made-for-television Mr. Magoo cartoon from UPA in 1960, "A Day At The Beach."  In this one, our nearsighted hero thinks he, his houseboy Charlie, and his cat Bowser (whom Quincy mistakes for a dog) are going to the beach.  This cartoon, in its' original undubbed version, was directed by Ray Patterson and written by ex-Disneyites Al Bertino and Dick Kinney.  Jim Backus, of course, stars as the voice of Mr. Quincy Magoo.

Ducks Jump Buckeyes To Climb To #2 In AP Poll; Beavers Fall Out After Upset Defeat

In the newest Associated Press (media) poll, the Oregon Ducks, following their Saturday annihilation of Nicholls State, climbed past Ohio State into #2 in the rankings, trailing only Alabama.  The Ducks remained at #3 in the USA Today/Coaches poll.  As for Oregon State, following their upset home defeat at the hands of Eastern Washington, the Beavers, who were ranked 25th in both polls coming into this past weekend's action, wound up with no votes whatsoever in either poll.

Sir David Frost, Best Remembered For Interviews With Dick Nixon, R.I.P.

Sir David Frost, the British television personality best remembered for his 1977 televised interviews with former President Richard M. Nixon, passed away on Saturday of an apparent heart attack at age 74, while aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, where he was scheduled to give a speech.

Mr. Frost was a regular on the BBC's satirical comedy series That Was The Week That Was.  After the BBC took the show of the air, Sir David came to America and became, first a regular, then the host, of NBC's version of TW3 (1964-65).

He later hosted a syndicated TV talk show.

It was in 1977 that Sir David conducted his interviews with former President Nixon.  When asked about his abuses of presidential power, Mr. Nixon came up with this answer, "Well, when the president does it, that means it is not illegal."

In his last years, Sir David conducted interviews with newsmakers for Al Jazeera English.

Quarterback Vernon Adams completed 23 of 30 passes for 411 yards and four touchdowns while running for two more scores, including the winning TD from two yards out with 18 seconds remaining as the Eastern Washington Eagles from the Football Championship Subdivision (Big Sky Conference) knocked off the #25-ranked (in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls) Oregon State Beavers 49-46 in the regular-season opener for both schools on Saturday.

Ducks Annihilate Colonels In Season Opener

At Eugene, Oregon:

Marcus Mariota completed 12 of 21 passes for 234 yards for a touchdown and ran five times for another 113 yards and two more scores (runs of 12 and 46 yards) as the Oregon Ducks (ranked #3 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches preseason polls) destroyed the visiting Nicholls State Colonels (FCS) 66-3 on Saturday in the regular-season opener for both schools.  De'Anthony Thomas ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks while Bryon Marshall (who ran for 124 yards) ran 49 yards for a TD of his own.  The victory marked Mark Helfrich's debut as Oregon's new head football coach.

Timbers Fall At RSL

At Sandy, Utah:

Luis Gil (9'), Joao Plata (15'), Javier Morales (55'), and Alvaro Saborio (67') each delivered a goal on Friday as Real Salt Lake doubled-up the visiting Portland Timbers 4-2 in a nationally-televised Major League Soccer match.

The Timbers, whose goals came courtesy of Darlington Nagbe (31') and Zal Zizzo (77'), were reduced to ten men following the red-card ejection of Ben Zemanski (45'+2) for his challenge on RSL's Ned Grabavoy.

Portland will host Toronto FC next Saturday at 11:00 PM Pacific Time.

Here are Mickey and Minnie ripoffs starring in "The Office Boy," an Aesop's Sound Fable entry from New York City's Van Beuren Productions in 1930, originally released theatrically by the Pathe Film Exchanges.

With musical synchroniztion by Gene Rodemich, this cartoon was produced by Amadee J. Van Beuren and directed by John Foster and Harry Bailey.

This was the kind of cartoon that became a little too close for comfort as Walt Disney soon afterward took legal action against the Van Beuren studio.

Originally released theatrically by Pathe Film Exchanges, this cartoon, with music synchronized by Gene Rodemich, was produced in New York City by Amadee J. Van Beuren and directed by John Foster and Mannie Davis (both of whom would eventually rejoin their old boss Paul Terry at Terrytoons).

Time For A Rare Cartoon

Here's a 1942 cartoon, "All Out For V" from Terrytoons.  This World War II-themed film was the New Rochelle, New York-based studio's first Academy Award-nominated cartoon.

In this one, a peaceful forest is upended by a bombing as war is declared.  The forest animals begin going to work to build military equipment, help the war effort,  and then defeat the enemy.

With story by John Foster and music by Philip A. Scheib, this cartoon, released theatrically by 20th Century-Fox, was produced by Paul Terry and directed by Mannie Davis.

Eydie Gorme (a.k.a. Mrs. Steve Lawrence), Sophisticated Pop Singer (Along With Her Husband), Had Big Hit With "Blame It On The Bossa Nova," R.I.P.

Popular singer Eydie Gorme, the lively singer who performed a decades-long act with husband Steve Lawrence, and who, along with her husband, won a Grammy Award in 1960 for best pop duo, and an Emmy Award in 1979 for the special Steve and Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin, passed away this past Saturday in Las Vegas at age 84 after a brief illness.

Both Brooklyn-born Steve and Bronx-born Eydie had big hits as solo acts (he with "Go Away Little Girl" in 1962, she with the Grammy-nominated "Blame It On The Bossa Nova" in 1963).

Soul Vs. Rattlers For ArenaBowl Title

Both Arena Football League conference championship games were played on Saturday.

At Jacksonville, Florida:

Quarterback Dan Raudabaugh threw eight touchdown passes as the Philadelphia Soul defeated the Jacksonville Sharks 75-59 to win the American Conference championship.

At Phoenix:

The Arizona Rattlers used a 37-0 run en route to a 65-57 home win over the Spokane Shock in the National Conference championship game.

The Philadelphia Soul (defending AFL champions) will take on the Arizona Rattlers next Saturday in ArenaBowl XXVI, to be played at Orlando, Florida (10:00 AM Pacific Time, CBS).

Stamps Down Riders In Calgary, Hand Saskatchewan First Defeat

At Calgary, Alberta:

Running back Jon Cornish ran for 175 yards and four touchdowns on Friday night as the Calgary Stampeders (5-1) held off the previously undefeated Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-1) 42-27 at home to move into a tie for first place atop the Canadian Football League's Western Division.

Timbers Fall To RSL In US Open Cup Semifinal

At Sandy, Utah:

Alvaro Saborio (7') and Joao Plata (78') each delivered a goal for Real Salt Lake as they held off the visiting Portland Timbers 2-1 in US Open Cup semifinal round action.

Diego Valeri scored for the Timbers in the 90th minute.

RSL will host DC United in the October 1 Open Cup final with the winner qualifying for the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League.

Portland will return to MLS action on August 17 when they host FC Dallas.

Art Donovan, Baltimore Colts Legend, Hall Of Famer Part of '58, '59 NFL Title Teams, Storytelling Humorist, R.I.P.

Art Donovan, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who as a defensive end that helped the Baltimore Colts win back-to-back National Football League titles (1958, 1959), passed away on Sunday at Baltimore at the age of 89.

Mr. Donovan, who began his NFL career in 1950 with the original Colts franchise that came over from the old All-American Football Conference, went to the New York Yanks when the original Colts folded in 1951, then to the Dallas Texans in 1952---a club which went bankrupt that year, and taken over by the league who converted it into a road team based in Hershey, Pennsylvania, returned to Baltimore in 1953 with the new Colts, who took over the roster of the defunct Texans.

Art was a tough defensive lineman, who, along with Don Joyce, Gino Marchetti, and Gene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, formed the defensive front that helped the Colts win back-to-back NFL championship games (both over the New York Giants) in 1958 and 1959.

Art retired after the 1961 season after 12 NFL seasons.  He would make in the ensuing decades make numerous appearances on TV talk shows, telling humorous stories about his playing days.

AFL Playoffs: Rattlers Bite SaberCats To Advance

At Phoenix:

The Arizona Rattlers defeated the visiting San Jose SaberCats 59-49 on Sunday in a National Conference divisional playoff game as the opening round of the Arena Football League playoffs came to a close.

The Rattlers will host the Spokane Shock this coming Saturday in the National Conference championship game, with the winner to play in ArenaBowl XXVI on August 17 in Orlando, Florida against the winner of the Jacksonville-Philadelphia American Conference title contest.

Frustrated Timbers Forced To Settle For 1-1 Cascadia Cup Home Draw With Caps

Jordan Harvey delivered the equalizer in the 69th minute off a corner kick as the Vancouver Whitecaps gained a 1-1 Saturday night Cascadia Cup (and Major League Soccer) road draw with the Portland Timbers.  Ryan Johnson scored for the Timbers in the 49th minute.

The Timbers will pay a visit on Real Salt Lake in US Open Cup semifinal round action this coming Wednesday.  Portland's next MLS match is at home on August 17 against FC Dallas.

AFL Playoffs: Sharks, Soul Advance To American Conference Title Game

The Arena Football League playoffs continued on Saturday with two games, both in the American Conference.

At Philadelphia:

Quarterback Dan Raudabaugh threw for 325 yards and six touchdowns including the go-ahead strike to Andrae Thurman with 8:46 remaining in regulation as the Philadelphia Soul held off the visiting Orlando Predators 59-55.  Predators' quarterback Andy Garcia also threw for six TDs but committed a critical turnover with his fumble in Soul territory with under 30 seconds left.

At Jacksonville, Florida:

A forced fumble on a sack by Matt Marcorelle and subsequent touchdown recovery by Derrick Summers with four seconds remaining as the Jacksonville Sharks completed a 21-point outburst in the last 78 seconds for a come-from-behind 69-62 home victory over the Tampa Bay Storm.

Philadelphia will visit Jacksonville in next Saturday night's American Conference championship game with the winner heading to Orlando for ArenaBowl XXVI to be played on August 17 (CBS Network).

AFL Playoffs: Defense Helps Propel Spokane Past Chicago To Advance To Conference Title Game

At Spokane, Washington:

Ruschard Dodd-Masters ran back interceptions for touchdowns on consecutive possessions as the Spokane Shock defeated the visiting Chicago Rush 69-47 on Thursday night as the Arena Football League playoffs commenced.  The Shock will play in next weekend's National Conference championship game against the winner of Sunday's San Jose-Arizona contest.

Time For A Movie!

From Monogram Pictures in 1939, here's a film entitled "Irish Luck."  In this one, based on Charles Molyneux Brown's story "Death Hops The Bells," Buzzy O'Brien (played by Frankie Darro) is a bellhop in a hotel where a guest is murdered.  The Police blame Kitty Monahan (played by Sheila Darcy) for the murder.  Leave it to Buzzy, who succeeds in helping Kitty espcape and ends up hiding in his home with his mother.  Buzzy and his pal Jefferson (portrayed by Mantan Moreland) manage to fumble, bumble, and stumble their way to finding the real killer.

This movie stars Frankie Darro, Dick Purcell, Lillian Elliott, Dennis Moore, James Flavin, Sheila Darcy, and of course, the aforementioned Mantan Moreland.

With story by Charles M. Brown and  screenplay by Mary McCarthy, this picture was produced by Howard Bretherton (who direced it), Scott R. Dunlap, and Grant Withers.

This is apparently a British print of this Hollywood-made film.
