Wolverines Hand Ducks First Setback

Zak Irwin scored 19 points and Caris LeVert added 18 as the Michigan Wolverines (#19 in the Associated Press poll, # 18 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 4-0) defeated the previously-unbeaten Oregon Ducks (3-1) 70-63 in the semifinal round of the Legends Classic on Monday.  Joseph Young paced the Ducks with 20 points.

Men's College Hoops: Ducks Support In Coaches Poll Grows

There was a spurt of growth in the new USA Today/Coaches men's college basketball poll for the Oregon Ducks as they now garnered enough support to where they would be ranked #33.

That was the only support for any of the Beaver State's four men's NCAA Division I basketball programs as all four schools (all undefeated with a combined record of 11-0) were shut out of the Associated Press poll with no support.

Grey Cup Playoffs: It's Ti-Cats Vs. Stamps For The Marbles

The Canadian Football League's Grey Cup Playoffs continued on Sunday as both divisional finals were played.

Brandon Banks and Nic Grigsby each scored a pair of touchdowns as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats handled the visiting Montreal Alouettes 40-24 to win the Eastern Division final and advanced to their second straight Grey Cup Final.

Mike Nichols, Acclaimed Director Of "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf," "The Graduate," Husband Of Ex-ABC News Anchorwoman Diane Sawyer, R.I.P.

Mike Nichols, who directed such noted motion pictures as "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and "The Graduate" and who was the husband of recently-retired ABC evening news anchorwoman Diane Sawyer, passed away on Wednesday in Manhattan at age 83.

What?! No Goats???

The Portland Timbers did not select any players from the roster of recently-deceased Chivas USA in Wednesday's Major League Soccer dispersal draft.

Only seven Goats were selected, topped off by goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who was chosen with the first pick by FC Dallas.

One ex-Goat who wasn't available was Erick Torres.  MLS was negotiating a long-term contract to keep the striker nicknamed Cubo in the league. 

Players who weren't selected on Wednesday will take part in the Re-Entry Draft, if eligible, or will be made available via the Waiver Draft, set to take place on December 10, the same day as the Expansion Draft for the New York City Football Club and the Orlando City Soccer Club.

Gary Payton II (who grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots) and Langston Morris-Walker each scored 16 points on Tuesday as the Oregon State Beavers (2-0) dominated visiting Corban (3-1 overall) 86-62.

Jordan Carter paced the Warriors with 18 points.

The game was an exhibition for the NAIA school from Salem, Oregon but counted toward the Beavers' record.

Ducks Still #2 In CFP Rankings; 'Bama Becomes Top Dog

The Oregon Ducks remained in the #2 slot in the College Football Playoff committee rankings as of Tuesday as Alabama, after their victory over unbeaten Mississippi State, jumped to number one.  Florida State remains at #3 while the Bulldogs, despite the defeat, stayed in the top four at number four.

College Hoops: Ducks Get A Piece Of Support In Coaches' Poll

Following the opening weekend of the men's college basketball season, the Oregon Ducks (who demolished Coppin State at home on Friday) did receive one vote in the USA Today/Coaches poll, which would put them in a three-way tie for 46th place (with Miami of Florida and Dayton).  It was the only vote for support for any of the Beaver State's four Division I basketball teams in either the Coaches' poll or the Associated Press poll.  The Ducks, Oregon State, Portland, and Portland State are a combined 5-0 to start the season.

Grey Cup Playoffs: Alouettes, Eskimos Advance To Division Finals; Riders Detrhoned

The Canadian Football League's Grey Cup Playoffs commenced on Sunday with two games.

At Montreal:

Six different players scored a grand total of seven touchdowns as the Montreal Alouettes demolished the visiting British Columbia Lions 50-17 in the Eastern Division semifinal game.  The Als will visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats next Sunday in the Eastern Division final (10:00 AM Pacific Time, ESPN in the United States, TSN in Canada).



At Edmonton, Alberta:

A punt return of 88 yards for a touchdown by Kendial Lawrence coupled with a stingy defense that picked off quarterback Kerry Joseph five times enabled the Edmonton Eskimos to detrone the defending Grey Cup champions Saskatchewan Roughriders 18-10 at home in the Western Conference semifinal game.  The Eskimos will visit the Calgary Stampeders in next Sunday's Western Division final (1:30 PM Pacific Time, TSN in Canada).

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw a 48-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to Michael Crabtree while Phil Dawson kicked three field goals (31, 37, 44 yards) and the defense intercepted Eli Manning five times as the San Francisco 49ers (6-4) held off the home-standing New York Giants (3-7) 16-10 on Sunday.

Niners Capture Wild OT Affair In New Orleans

After quarterback Colin Kaepernick (who had earlier thrown a touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin) completed a 51-yard pass to Michael Crabtree late in the fourth quarter on a fourth-down play to set up a game-tying field goal, the San Francisco 49ers (5-4), with Phil Dawson kicking his second field goal, this time the game winner from 35 yards out in overtime, defeated the New Orleans Saints (4-5) 27-24 on the road on Sunday.  It was linebacker Ahmad Brooks who sacked and stripped Saints quarterback Drew Brees of the football in the extra period, setting up the game-winning three-pointer.  Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde each ran for a first-quarter touchdown for the Niners.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Luke Falk made his maiden start and threw for 471 yards and five touchdowns on Saturday as the Washington State Cougars (3-7 overall, 2-5 in Pac-12 play) knocked off the Oregon State Beavers (4-5, 1-5) 39-32 on the road, placing the Beavers' hopes of post-season play in jeopardy as Oregon State suffered its' fourth straight defeat.  The Beavers have three games remaining, two of them at home against College Football Playoff aspirants with one defeat apiece (Arizona State and Oregon).

Riders Snap Losing Skid, Top Eskimos At Home In Regular-Season Finale

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8) ended a five-game losing skid on Saturday with a 24-17 home victory over the Edmonton Eskimos (9-9) on the final day of the Canadian Football League regular season.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores on Saturday as the Oregon Ducks (#5 in the College Football Playoff rankings and the Associated Press poll, #6 in the USA Today/Coaches poll; 8-1 overall, 5-1 in Pac-12 play), avenged their 2012 and 2013 defeats (which ruined their national championship aspirations) with a 45-16 home demolition of the Stanford Cardinal(5-4, 3-3).

MLS Cup Playoffs: Revs Take Command Of Series With Crew After Game-One Road Win; RSL And Galaxy Battle To 0-0 Draw In Series Opener In Utah

The Major League Soccer Cup Playoffs continued on Saturday as two conference semifinal series opened.

NOTE:  This is the first time that MLS will be using the away goals rule in their two-game conference semifinal and final series as a tie-breaker in the event the aggregate score were deadlocked after 180 minutes.

Madison Bumgarner (named series Most Valuable Player; that's him celebrating the victory with teammates) pitched five innings of two-hit, four-strikeout scoreless baseball in relief  while Michael Morse delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the fourth inning as the San Francisco Giants won their third World Series championship in five years on Wednesday with their 3-2 road victory in game seven over the Kansas City Royals.  

The Giants won their first World Series game seven in five tries and ended a string of nine straight game-seven victories by home teams.

A key to the Giants' victory came in the third inning as second baseman Joe Panik turned in a double play (this after video replay overturned an earlier ruling that he didn't) to help snuff out a Royals rally (Kansas City had tied it up at 2-2 in the second inning after the Giants had scored twice in their half of that same inning).

MLS Cup Playoffs: Michel Delivers Late PK As Hoops Oust Caps In Knockout Match; Get Sounders Next

At Frisco, Texas:

Michel's penalty kick in the 84th minute carried FC Dallas To a 2-1 home victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Western Conference one-game knockout playoff as the Major League Soccer Cup Playoffs commenced on Wednesday.

The Hoops will next take on the newly-crowned Supporters' Shield winners, the Seattle Sounders in a two-game Western Conference semifinal series, which begins this coming Sunday at Frisco, Texas (6:00 PM Pacific Standard Time, ESPN 2), with the return match to be played in Seattle on Monday, November 10 (7:30 PM Pacific Time, NBCSN).

2014 World Series: Royals Use Seven-Run Second-Inning To Demolish Giants, Square Series At Three Games Apiece, Force Game Seven

At Kansas City:

Lorenzo Cain looped a two-run single, part of a seven-run second inning while Yordano Ventura pitched seven innings of three-hit shutout baseball as the Kansas City Royals demolished the visiting San Francisco Giants 10-0 in Tuesday's sixth game of the World Series.

The series, now deadlocked at three games apiece, will be decided in game #7 on Wednesday night in Kansas City.  Tim Hudson will start for the Giants while Jeremy Guthrie will start for the Royals.

The Oregon Ducks ranked fifth in the first edition of the College Football Playoff Committee Rankings released on Tuesday.  Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn, and Ole Miss were ranked #1 through #4.

The Giants, who now lead the series three games to two, can close out their third World Series crown in five years with a game-six victory in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Ducks Climb Up A Spot In Both AP And Coaches Polls

Following their Friday victory at Levi Stadium over California, the Oregon Ducks climbed up one spot in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls.

The Ducks moved up to #5 in the AP poll and #6 in the Coaches' rankings.

Pablo Sanoval's single in the fifth inning set up Hunter Pence to score the tying run and the 2012 series Most Valuable Player followed with a go-ahead two run single as the San Francisco Giants, who scored two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and four in the seventh, overcame a 4-1 deficit and delivered a frontier-styled fist beating to the visiting Kansas City Royals 1-4 in Saturday's fourth game of the World Series, which is now squared at two games apiece.  That's the Big Panda himself celebrating.

Timbers Top Hoops; Whitecaps Win, Too; Portland Misses MLS Cup Playoffs

With goals from Darlington Nagbe (43', his first of the league season) and Maximiliano Urruti (81'), the  Portland Timbers blanked FC Dallas 2-0 in the road in Saturday Major League Soccer action.  Despite the victory, because of the Vancouver Whitecaps' 1-0 home win later Saturday over the Colorado Rapids (Kendall Waston scoring that contest's lone goal in the 70th minute), the Timbers were eliminated from playoff contention.

Riders Crumble In Fourth Quarter, Fall To Stampeders For Fifth Straight Defeat

At Calgary, Alberta:

In Friday Canadian Football League action, the Calgary Stampeders (14-2) scored 25 points in less than seven minutes during the fourth quarter as they battled back to upend the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-8) 40-27, handing the 'Riders their fifth straight defeat and sixth in their last seven starts.

Quarterback Kevin Hogan threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, while Ty Montgomery ran back a punt 50 yards for still another score on Saturday as the Stanford Cardinal (5-3 overall, 3-2 in Pac-12 play) dominated the visiting Oregon State Beavers (4-3, 1-3) 38-14.

Marcus Mariota completed 18 of 30 passes on Friday night for 326 yards (increasing his career total to 8,625, making him his school's all-time career leader in passing yards) and five touchdowns as the Oregon Ducks (#6 in the Associated Press poll, #7 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 7-1 overall, 4-1 in Pac-12 play) defeated the California Golden Bears (4-4, 2-4) 59-41 in the first collegiate football game to be played at Levi's Stadium.

2014 World Series: Sixth-Inning Rampage Allows Royals To Level Series At One Game Apiece

At Kansas City:

Salvador Perez delivered a two-run double and Omar Infante hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run sixth inning on Wednesday night as the Kansas City Royals squared the World Series with the San Francisco Giants at one game apiece following their 7-2 game-two home domination.  Designated hitter Billy Butler (shown here) drove in the go-ahead (and ultimately winning) run in that sixth inning.

Timbers Fall To CD Olimpia In Honduras; Portland Eliminated From CONCACAF Champions League

At Tegucigalpa, Honduras:

Goals from Rommel Quioto (2') and Antony Lozano (4', 54') carried CD Olimpia to a 3-1 Tuesday night home victory over the Portland Timbers in the CONCACAF Champions League Group Five finale for both clubs.  With both clubs level on overall points with nine and each team having scored five goals in the two clubs between them, the Honduran club, with the two goals scored last month in the match played in Portland, as opposed to the one that the Timbers scored on Tuesday in Honduras,  won the group and advanced to the quarterfinal round on away goals.

The Timbers' Major League Soccer regular-season finale will take place at Frisco, Texas as Portland will pay a visit on FC Dallas on Saturday (5:30 PM Pacific Time; ROOT Sports Northwest.  A Portland win, combined with a Vancouver defeat or draw at home, would give them the fifth and final Western Conference playoff berth.  The Timbers would also qualify should they gain a draw against the Hoops and the Whitecaps fall to visiting Colorado.

Madison Bumgarner (that's him, folks) pitched seven strong innings on Tuesday night while outfielder Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in the opening inning as the San Francisco Giants dominated the Kansas City Royals 7-1 in the opening game of the World Series.  The defeat ended the Royals' run of eleven straight post-season wins (eight this year).

Kendial Lawrence returned the opening kickoff of the second half 95 yards for a touchdown while quarterback Mike Reilly completed 20 of 30 passes for 260 yards and ran five yards for another major score on Sunday as the Edmonton Eskimos (11-5) locked up second place in the Canadian Football League's Western Division and a home playoff game with a 24-19 road win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-7), who have now lost four games in a row and five of their last six starts.

True freshman running back Royce Freeman ran for 169 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday as the Oregon Ducks (#9 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls; 6-1 overall, 3-1 in Pac-12 play) dominated the visiting Washington Huskies (5-2, 1-2) 45-20.  Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 336 yards and two TDs. The victory was Oregon's eleventh straight over the Huskies.

Timbers Held To Scoreless Home Stalemate By RSL; Draw Level On Points With Caps For Final Western Conference Playoff Berth

At Portland, Oregon:

In the lone Friday Major League Soccer contest, Real Salt Lake held the home-standing Portland Timbers to a 0-0 draw.  RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando (who made six saves) and his Portland counterpart Donovan Ricketts each delivered a shutout in the match.

The Timbers are now level on points with Vancouver for the final Western Conference playoff berth (with Portland having the superior goal differential) with one regular-season contest left.  The Whitecaps, with a game in hand,  will travel to Santa Clara, California for the San Jose Earthquakes' final game at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday night.

The Timbers will close out the regular season next Saturday at FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas (5:30 PM Pacific Time, ROOT Sports Northwest).
