Paul Revere, Founder Of 1960s Rock Band, R.I.P.
Paul Revere, who founded the 1960s rock and roll band that bore his name, passed away on Saturday at his Garden Valley, Idaho home at age 76 from cancer.
Mr. Revere, who was the keyboardist for his band, Paul Revere & The Raiders, had formed a band called the Downbeats, which were renamed the Raiders in 1960.
Those of us who remember watching Paul and his band perform on such television shows as Where The Action Is, which was a weekday afternoon program hosted and produced on the West Coast by Dick Clark and aired over ABC, remember the band wearing Revolutionary War-era costumes.
The band reached its' peak when a song entitled "Indian Reservation" reached the top of the pop charts in 1971.
By that time, lead singer Mark Lindsay had left the band and had a big hit around 1970 with "Arizona."

No More Uncola Nuts
Geoffrey Holder, the actor, dancer, and artist best remembered to a generation of television viewers for his appearing in a long-running series of 7-Up commercials explaining the differences between cola and "Uncola" nuts (lemons and limes), passed away on Sunday of complications from pneumonia at age 84.
As I recall, it was during the 1970s that the Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago-born Mr. Holder explained how 7-Up's fresh clean taste came from these so-called "Uncola" nuts compared favorably with all those cola drinks.

The Timbers not only lost the match, they lost captain Will Johnson to a broken leg in the opening minute in a collision with Reds' defender Mark Bloom, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

George Hamilton IV, Rock 'n' Roll-Turned-Country-and-Western Singer, R.I.P.
George Hamilton IV, a former Rock 'n' Roll singer who found his true calling singing Country, Western, and Folk songs in the 1960s and afterward, passed away this past Wednesday in Nashville at age 77, four days after having suffered a heart attack.
As a teenager in 1956, the North Carolina-born Mr. Hamilton scored a major hit with "A Rose and A Baby Ruth," which reached #6 on Billboard's pop chart and sold in the neighborhood of one million copies.
While he scored several more pop hits during the late 1950s (though none as big as his first), George yearned to be a Country and Western singer, in the mode of such stars he admired as a young lad, such as Gene Autry, and Tex Ritter, amongst others.
By 1960, he became a member of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, where he would appear dozens of times over the course of the next half century.
When he became known as the "international ambassador of country music, " this wasn't hype, but the truth, as he performed in numerous countries all over the world.
Among George's biggest C&W hits: "Abilene" in 1963, which shot to the top of the country chart while reaching the Top 20 on the pop chart. Other hits include "Before This Day Ends, " "Steel Rail Blues," the Gordon Lightfoot-penned "Early Morning Rain," and the Ray Griff-composed "Canadian Pacific," which reached #1 in Canada.

Swan Song For Hudson
Here's a magazine ad for the 1957 Hudson Hornet, which came in four-door sedan and two-door Hollywood Hardtop body styles. This car, like that year's Nash Ambassador, came with a 327 cubic-inch, 255 horsepower, overhead valve V-8 engine. As was the case with Nash, American Motors pulled the plug on Hudson after the '57 model year to concentrate on Rambler and the Metropolitan subcompact.

Here's a full-page magazine ad for the 1957 Nash Ambassador. This car, which came in two-door hardtop and four-door sedan (like the one here) body styles and had a 327 cubic inch, 255 horsepower overhead valve V-8 engine. After the 1957 model year, American Motors pulled the plug on both Nash and Hudson and concentrated almost solely on Rambler. The '57 Ambassador was one of the first cars to include quad headlights.

For that model year, American Motors separated Rambler from both Nash and Hudson and made it a separate make (they did the same with the British-build Metropolitan subcompact). Also, AMC gave Rambler its' own overhead valve V-8 engine (190 horsepower) to go with its' inline six-cylinder engine.

Following their 48-18 home beat-down of Wyoming, the Oregon Ducks remained ranked second in the Associated Press (media) poll (trailing only Florida State) with 17 first-place votes.
The Ducks climbed up a spot (past Oklahoma) into third place in the USA Today/Coaches poll (trailing only the Seminoles and Alabama) with six first-place votes.
The Oregon State Beavers, who were off this weekend, still received some support in the Coaches' rankings. They would be tied with Louisville for 40th place.

Cosimo Matassa, the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame recording engineer and New Orleans studio owner who set the stage for classic recordings by such legends as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Ray Charles, and Professor Longhair, passed away on Thursday at age 88.

Joan Rivers, Comedienne, R.I.P.
Iconic and sometimes tart-tongued comedienne Joan Rivers passed away at New York City on Thursday, according to her daughter Melissa.
The 81-year-old Miss Rivers had gone into cardiac arrest during a surgical procedure and being put on life support.
I've always considered Joan sort of an acquired taste.

College Football: Ducks Remain Third In AP Poll; Beavers Still Have Some Coaches Support
In the new Associated Press college football (media) poll that was released on Tuesday, the Oregon Ducks, after their 62-13 season-opening manhandling of visiting South Dakota, remained in the #3 position (with five first-place votes) that they were in the pre-season rankings. The Ducks stayed in the #4 position in the USA Today/Coaches poll, with two first-placed votes.
The Oregon State Beavers, who saw what support they had in the AP poll evaporate despite a 29-14 home win over Portland State, still had some support in the Coaches' rankings and would be ranked #44.
