At Oakland:

Justin Verlander pitched eight shutout innings (retiring the first sixteen batters he faced), surrendering only two base hits and one walk while striking out ten as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Oakland Athletics 3-0 on the road Thursday night in game five of their American League divisional playoff series as the Tigers took the series three games to two to advance to the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox, which opens at Boston's Fenway Park this coming Saturday.  Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, which turned out to be the game and series-winning hit.
