Brandon Ashley scored 20 points on Saturday night as the top-seeded Arizona Wildcats (#5 in the Associated Press poll, #6 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 31-3) delivered an 80-52 beatdown of the second-seeded Oregon Ducks (25-9) to win their first Pacific-12 Men's Basketball Tournament championship since 2002.  The Wildcats are hoping for a high seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.  The Ducks likely will get an invite to "The Big Dance."

EAGLES KNOCK OFF GRIZZLIES IN MISSOULA, WIN BIG SKY TITLE AND NCAA TOURNEY BERTH

At Missoula, Montana:

Tyler Harvey scored 18 points as the second-seeded Eastern Washington Eagles (26-8) defeated the top-seeded Montana Grizzlies (20-12) 69-65 on Saturday night to win the championship game of the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, despite a 23-point, 17-rebound performance from the Grizzlies' Martin Breunig.

With the victory, the Eagles gained the Big Sky Conference's automatic NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament berth.

Pac-12 Tournament: It's Cats vs. Ducks For The Marbles (Both Teams Likely In NCAA Tourney)

Both games in the semifinal round of the Pacific-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament were contested at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada, near Las Vegas, on Friday.

In the opener, Brandon Ashley scored a career-high 24 points as the top-seeded Arizona Wildcats (#5 in the Associated Press poll, #6 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 30-3) held off the fourth-seeded UCLA Bruins (20-13) 70-64.  Norman Powell scored 21 points to lead the Bruins, who will have to wait till Sunday to learn if they would make the NCAA Tourney, something that the Wildcats are likely to qualify for.

In the nightcap, the second-seeded Oregon Ducks (25-8), thanks to Joseph Young's game-winning three-point basket with 1.1 seconds remaining (he scored 25 points), defeated the third-seeded Utah Runnin' Utes (#17 in both the AP and Coaches' polls; 24-8) 67-64.  Brandon Taylor paced the Utes with 24 points.

The Ducks and Wildcats will play for the Pac-12 Tourney title on Saturday night at suburban Las Vegas at 8:00 PM Pacific Time (ESPN).

Big Sky Tournament: It's Grizzlies Vs. Eagles For The Marbles (And An NCAA Tourney Berth)

Both games in the semifinal round of the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Tournament were played on Friday at the Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Montana.

In the opener, Felix Von Hofe converted seven of his eight three-point shots en route to a career-high 23 points as the second-seeded Eastern Washington Eagles (25-8) held off the third-seeded Sacramento State Hornets (20-11) 91-83. League MVP Mikh McKinney paced the Hornets with 24 points.

In the nightcap, Jordan Gregory scored 21 points (two of them on the game-winning layup with less than a 0.4 seconds remaining) as the top-seeded Montana Grizzlies (20-11) held off the fourth-seeded Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (19-14) 61-59, despite 26 points from NAU's Kris Yanku.

The Grizzlies and Eagles will square off in the Big Sky Tourney's championship game Saturday at 6:00 PM Pacific Time at Missoula (ESPNU).

Pac-12 Tournament: Wildcats, Bruins, Ducks, Utes Advance To Semifinals

Four games were played on Thursday as the Pacific-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal round took place, with all contests taking place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena at Paradise, Nevada, near Las Vegas.

In the opening contest, Stanley Johnson scored 19 points while Brandon Ashley added 15 as the top-seeded Arizona Wildcats (#5 in the Associated Press poll, #6  in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 29-3) defeated the eighth-seeded California Golden Bears (18-15) 73-51.

Game #2:

The fourth-seeded UCLA Bruins (20-12) ran roughshod over the #12-seeded Southern California Trojans (12-20) 96-70 as the Bruins' Isaac Hamilton hit seven three-point baskets en route to a 36-point performance. Katin Reinhardt paced the Trojans with 20 points.


Game #3:

Joseph Young scored 30 points while Elgin Cook added 20 as the second-seeded Oregon Ducks (24-8), with all five starters scoring in double figures, overcame a sluggish first-half performance and overtook the tenth-seeded Colorado Buffaloes (15-17) 93-85.

Game #4:

Delon Wright scored 20 points while Jordan Loveridge added 18 as the #3-seeded Utah Runnin' Utes (#17 in both the Associated Press and USA today/Coaches polls; 24-7) an 80-56 beat-down on the sixth-seeded Stanford Cardinal (19-13). Chasson Randle scored 22 points to pace the Cardinal.

Big Sky Tournament: Eagles, Hornets (Who Defeat Vikings), Lumberjacks, Griz Advance To Semifinals

Four games were played on Thursday as the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Tournament commenced with all games played at the Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Montana.

In the opening contest, Tyler Harvey scored a career-high 42 points as the second-seeded Eastern Washington Eagles (24-8) came back from a 41-38 halftime deficit and overcame the seventh-seeded Idaho Vandals (13-17) 91-83. Connor Hill paced Idaho with 23 points.

In the second match, the third-seeded Sacramento State Hornets (20-10) defeated the sixth-seeded Portland State Vikings (15-14) 70-60.  Mikh McKinney scored 24 points and Dylan Garrity added 22 for the Hornets, offsetting 26 points from the Vikings' Gary Winston.

Game #3:

Aaseem Dixon scored 16 points---12 of them on four three-pointers---as the fourth-seeded Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (19-13) bested the fifth-seeded Northern Colorado Bears (15-15) 63-57.

Game #4:

The top-seeded (and hosts) Montana Grizzlies (19-11) survived a scare from Weber State (13-17) as they defeated the eighth-seeded Wildcats 76-73 in overtime.  The Grizzlies' Martin Breunig scored four of his 24 points in the extra period.  He also grabbed 12 rebounds.  Jeremy Senglin paced the Wildcats with 25 points.

Pac-12 Tournament: Bears, Trojans, Buffaloes (Who Oust Beavers) Advance To Quarterfinals; Colorado To Get Crack At Ducks

The Pacific-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament commenced on Wednesday with four games played at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in suburban Las Vegas.

In the opening match, David Kravish scored 25 points as the eighth-seeded California Golden Bears (18-14) dominated the ninth-seeded Washington State Cougars (13-18) 84-59.

In game two, Elijah Stewart scored 27 points and hit two key free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining as the Southern California Trojans (12-19), who finished in the Pac-12 basement this season, came back from a 14-point deficit with nine minutes remaining and knocked off the fifth-seeded Arizona State Wildcats (17-15) 67-64.

In the third contest, Askia Booker scored 20 points while Josh Scott added 16 (to go with his 14 rebounds) as the tenth-seeded Colorado Buffaloes (15-16) defeated the seventh-seeded Oregon State Beavers (17-14) 78-71, despite 17 points each from the Beavers' Gary Payton II and Malcolm Duvivier.

In the finale, Chasson Randle, who scored 10 points, hit the game-winning three-pointer with 2.4. seconds remaining as the sixth-seeded Stanford Cardinal (19-12) defeated the #11-seeded Washington Huskies (16-15) 71-19.Stefan Nastic paced the Cardinal with 21 points while Andrew Andrews topped the Huskies with 22.

For 1957, only the Golden Hawk remained while the other three varieties were merged into the Silver Hawk.

Kyle Wiltjer scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (#7 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls; 32-2) avenged their home defeat from late last month by defeating Brigham Young (25-9) 91-75 on Tuesday night to win their third successive West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Title (and with it, an automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Tournament), despite 28 points from the Cougars' Kyle Collinsworth.

The semifinal round of the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament took place on Monday with both matches contested at the Orleans Arena in suburban Las Vegas.

In the opener, Brian Wesley scored 25 points as the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (#7 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls; 31-2) defeated the fourth-seeded Pepperdine Waves (18-13) 79-61 to advanced to their 18th consecutive league tournament final.

In the nightcap, Kyle Collinsworth scored 13 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out 11 assists to net his NCAA record-tying sixth career triple-double as the second-seeded BYU Cougars (25-8) got the better of the sixth-seeded Portland Pilots (17-15) 84-70.  Chase Fischer and Tyler Haws helped the Cougars' coffers with 24 and 18 points, respectively.

BYU and Gonzaga will play for the conference title on Tuesday night.

The Oregon Ducks' support in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches men's college basketball polls continued to gain strength on Monday.  The Ducks would be ranked #26 in the former and tied for #28 in the latter.

Goose Eggs In The Rose City As Timbers Start MLS Season With 0-0 Draw With RSL

At Portland, Oregon:

The Portland Timbers and visiting Real Salt Lake battled to a 0-0 stalemate as the respective clubs opened their 2015 Major League Soccer regular seasons.  The teams' respective goalkeepers (the Timbers' Adam Kwarasey----in his first MLS match since coming over from Stromgodset of Norway's top flight----and RSL's veteran Nick Rimando) each posted a shutout---or clean sheet.

Vikings Top T-Birds On Road In Regular-Season Finale

At Cedar City, Utah:

Tiegbe Bamba scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds on Saturday as the Portland State Vikings (15-13 overall, 9-9 in Big Sky play) wrapped regular-season play with an 86-73 road win over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (10-19, 7-11).  The Vikings will play in the upcoming Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Tournament (they'll face Sacramento State on Thursday) while the T-Birds' season is over.

WCC Tournament: Pilots Knock Off Gaels; Waves Hold Off Toreros In Defensive Battle; Zags and BYU Oust Bay Area Schools To Advance To Semis

The quarterfinal round of the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament took place on Saturday at the Orleans Arena in suburban Las Vegas.

In the opening contest, Kevin Bailey scored 16 points as the sixth-seeded Portland Pilots (17-14) snapped a four-game skid by knocking off the #3-seeded Saint Mary's Gaels (21-9) 69-52, snapping nine-game losing streak against the Gaels and defeating Saint Mary's for the first time in five WCC Tourney meetings.

Brad Waldow scored 25 points (and grabbed eight rebounds), nearly half of the cold-shooting (30.2% from the field) Gaels' total score.

In game two, Stacy Davis scored 19 points as the fourth-seeded Pepperdine Waves (18-12) battled back from a six-point deficit to upend the fifth-seeded San Diego Toreros (15-16) 50-47.

Game #3:

Przemek Karnowski scored 24 points while Kyle Wiltjer added 19 as the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (#7 in the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls; 30-2) overcame a two-point halftime deficit and overcame the eighth-seeded San Francisco Dons (14-18) 81-72. Mark Tollefsen and Tim Dersken each scored 21 points for the Dons, who once led 29-22 in the first half. 

In the finale, Tyler Haws scored 30 points (and grabbed nine rebounds) and hit the game-winning jumper from 17 feet out with 2.5 seconds remaining as the second-seeded BYU Cougars (24-8) defeated the #7-seeded Santa Clara Broncos (14-18) 78-76, depsite Jared Brownridge's 29 points and Brandon Clark's 23 for the Broncos.

At Las Vegas:

Two games were played at the Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada, near Las Vegas on Friday as the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament commenced.

In the opener, Kruize Pinkins and Tim Derksen each scored 14 points as the eighth-seeded San Francisco Dons (14-17) held off the ninth-seeded Pacific Tigers (12-19) 62-58.

In the nightcap, the seventh-seeded Santa Clara Broncos (14-17) ran roughshod over the tenth-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions (8-23) 85-54.  Jared Brownridge and Brandon Clark each scored 19 points to pace the Broncos.  Evan Payne scored 16 of his 29 points for the Lions in the second half.

Aaseem Dixon scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds on Thursday as the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (17-13 overall, 12-5 in Big Sky play) defeated the visiting Portland State Vikings (14-13, 8-9) 58-51. DeShaun Wiggins went 15 and 8 for the Vikings, who held the Jacks to 31.8% shooting from the field but lost the rebounding battle 55-32.

The Lumberjacks host league-co-leading Sacramento State in their regular-season finale on Saturday.

In the latest edition of the Civil War basketball series, Elgin Cook scored 17 points on Wednesday as the Oregon Ducks (23-8 overall, 13-5 in Pac-12 play) racked up their fifth straight victory be defeating the Oregon State Beavers (17-13, 8-10) 65-62 in a hotly-contested regular-season finale for both schools.

The Beavers have dropped six of their last seven starts.

Men's Hoops: Ducks Gain More Support In AP, Coaches Polls

After their recent road sweep of the Pac-12 Conference's Bay Area schools, the Oregon Ducks picked up more support in the Associated Press men's college basketball poll.  They would be ranked #28.  They also picked up more support in the AP's USA Today/Coaches counterpart and would be ranked #30.

And, as it has been the case all season, there was no support in either poll for any of the Beaver State's other three NCAA Division I programs.

Dammit, Jim, I'm Telling You That Vulcan Ears Is Gone

Actor Leonard Nimoy, best remembered for his portrayal of the human-alien Mr. Spock, first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the classic 1966-69 NBC Network series Star Trek, as well as several theatrical films based on the TV series, passed away on Friday at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles at age 83.

Mr. Nimoy's sister, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed Leonard's passing, resulting from end-stage obstructive pulmonary disease.

Jerome Kersey, Former Trail Blazers Star Who Played On '90, '92 Western Conference Title Teams And On '99 Spurs NBA Champions, R.I.P.

Jerome Kersey, a former NBA star who played on the Portland Trail Blazers teams that went to the 1990 and 1992 Finals and played on the San Antonio Spurs' 1999 championship squad, passed away on Wednesday at Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center in Tualatin, Oregon at age 52.

Mr. Kersey passed away from a blood clot that traveled from his left calf to a lung.

He was an integral part of some of the best teams in the history of the Blazers' organization.

Jerome played in the NBA for 17 seasons, 11 of them with Portland.

His name is scattered over the Blazers' record book.  Jerome is fifth all-time in scoring, third in rebounding and steals, sixth in blocked shots, and eighth in assists.

Only Clyde Drexler (867) played more games in a Portland uniform than Jerome (831).

The Eagles' Tyler Harvey, the nation's leading scorer, returned to action after missing three games with an injury and scored 22 points.  However, he made only two of 13 three-point shots.

Gary Owens, Announcer On "Laugh In," R.I.P.

Gary Owens, a radio and television announcer best remembered for his deadpan, droll delivery as the announcer on the 1968-73 comedy-variety NBC TV series Rowan and Martin's Laugh In, passed away on Thursday at his Los Angeles home at age 80.

Mr Owens had struggled with diabetes.

Besides his duties on Dan and Dick's show, Gary was also known for doing numerous cartoon voice characterizations.

He was the voice of the title character on the CBS Network cartoon series Space Ghost (1966-67), which was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.

Bob Simon, Veteran CBS Newsman, Longtime "60 Minutes" Correspondent, R.I.P.

Bob Simon, the veteran CBS News correspondent who was a longtime fixture on the network's television newsmagazine 60 Minutes, passed away at age 73 on Wednesday night, a result of an automobile accident in New York City.

Mr. Simon, who had been contributing reports on 60 Minutes since 1996, joined CBS News in 1967 as a reporter and assignment editor.  His career ranged from covering campus riots to the war in Vietnam to reporting from the network's Tel Aviv bureau to being the CBS News State Department correspondent.

Bob won four Peabody Awards and 27 Emmys.

Jerry Tarkanian, Hall-of-Fame College Basketball Coach Who Won National Title At UNLV (1990), R.I.P.

Jerry Tarkanian, the towel-chewing Hall-of-Fame college basketball coach who piloted UNLV to the national championship in 1990, and who won 729 games during a 34-year Division I coaching career (1968-2002) at Long Beach State, UNLV, and Fresno State, passed away on Wednesday morning in Las Vegas at age 84.

His passing happened less than four days after that of fellow Hall-of-Fame coach Dean Smith of North Carolina.

Coach Tarkanian, known to one and all as "Tark the Shark," had been in poor health in recent years, having suffered two heart attacks in the past three years.

Besides his success as a coach, "Tark" had numerous run-ins with the NCAA.

Jerry was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

Ed Sabol, Founder Of NFL Films Who Turned Pro Football Into Cinematic Art, R.I.P.

Ed Sabol, the founder of NFL Films, the company that turned professional football into cinematic art, passed away on Monday at age 98, according to multiple reports.

Mr. Sabol founded Blair Motion Pictures in 1962 and was given the task of filming that year's NFL Championship Game between the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants.

That company was renamed NFL Films in 1964 and was given exclusive rights to record NFL games on film.

He remained with the company until his retirement in 1995, after which he turned the reins over to his now-deceased son Steve.

During Ed's time with the company, NFL Films won 52 Emmy Awards.  He was elected and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Joseph Young scored 29 points, grabbed ten rebonds, and dished out eight assists on Sunday as the Oregon Ducks (17-7 overall, 7-4 in Pac-12 play) manhandled the visiting Washington State Cougars (10-13, 4-7) 95-72.  

Dwayne Benjamin added 25 points for the Ducks, who ruined Cougars' head coach (and ex-Oregon player and head coach) Ernie Kent's return to Eugene.

Beavers Down Huskies By Double Digits, Stay Unbeaten At Home

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Gary Payton II scored 17 points and had five steals on Sunday as the Oregon State Beavers (16-7 overall, 7-4 in Pac-12 play) defeated the visiting Washington Huskies (14-9, 3-8) 64-50.

The Beavers, for the first time in school history, are 14-0 at home while they are off to their best showing after 23 games in a quarter-century, which is how long its' been since their most recent NCAA Tournament appearance.

UNC Icon Dean Smith, Who Coached Tar Heels To 879 Wins, Two National Titles; Mentor To Michael Jordan, R.I.P.

Dean Smith, who during his 36 years (1961-97) as head basketball coach at North Carolina, won 879 games (which at the time of his retirement was the all-time record for most wins by a men's college basketball coach), piloted the Tar Heels to national titles in 1982 and 1993, and who coached such players as Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Phil Ford, Sam Perkins, passed away on Saturday night at his Chapel Hill, North Carolina home at age 83.

Coach Smith also coached the United States men's Olympic team to the 1976 Gold Medal at that year's Montreal Summer Olympic Games.

The Tar Heels registered 20 or more wins for 27 consecutive years, still an NCAA Division I record.

To go with the two NCAA national titles, Coach Smith's Tar Heels won 13 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles, went to 11 NCAA Tournament Final Fours, and would be enshrined in both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall of Fame.

Thomas van der Mars (who grabbed 12 rebounds), Bryce Pressley, and Kevin Bailey each scored 16 points on Saturday night as the Portland Pilots (14-10 overall, 5-7 in WCC play), who shot 61.9% from the field,  dominated the Santa Clara Broncos (11-14, 5-8) 74-54 on the road.

Hornets Sting Vikings At Home

At Sacramento, California:

The Sacramento State Hornets (16-6 overall, 10-1 in Big Sky play) held off the visiting Portland State Vikings (11-10, 5-6) 64-60 on Saturday. Mikh Mckinney scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half to pace the Hornets, who are off to their best start since moving up to Division I in 1991.

Lizabeth Scott, Sultry Film Noir Siren, R.I.P.

Lizabeth Scott, a sultry blonde who had a come-hither voice cut out for seething romantic and homicidal passions in her Hollywood motion-picture film noir roles in the late 1940s and early 1950s, passed away last Saturday (January 31) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles at age 92.

Billed as another Lauren Bacall or Veronica Lake, Miss Scott, in many of her 22 films, portrayed a good-bad girl in love in her head and larceny in her heart.

Amongst Lizabeth's co-stars were Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, and other such tough customers.

Amongst her films were "The Strange Loves of Martha Ivers," "Dead Reckoning," "Too Late For Tears," "Pitfall," "Dark City," "I Walk Alone," and "Bad For Each Other."

She also co-starred with Elvis Presley in "Loving You," made in 1957.

Mary Healy, Singer/Actress Wife Who Teamed Up With Husband Peter Lind Hayes, R.I.P.

Mary Healy, an actress and singer who was half of a long-time show business partnership with husband Peter Lind Hayes, passed away on Tuesday at Calabasas, California at age 96.

Mr. Hayes, a movie actor and Broadway, nightclub, and television comedian and the New Orleans-born Miss Healy, who he married in 1940, appeared in two early TV variety shows, The Peter Lind Hayes Show on NBC and Star of the Family on CBS.

Peter and Mary starred in the 1958 Broadway farce Who Was That Lady I Saw You With?" which ran for 26 weeks.

In 1960, the twosome starred in the sitcom Peter Loves Mary, which was about show-business personalities struggling with life in the suburbs.

Peter passed away in 1998.

Joseph Young scored 32 points to boost his career collegiate total to 2002 on Wednesday night (becoming the fifth active Division I player to do so) as the Oregon Ducks (16-7 overall, 6-4 in Pac-12 play) defeated the visiting Washington Huskies (14-8, 3-7) 78-74.

The New England Patriots overcame a ten-point fourth-quarter deficit on Sunday and defeated the defending champions Seattle Seahawks 28-24 to win Super Bowl XLIX and their first National Football League championship in ten years.  Quarterback Tom Brady, who was named game Most Valuable Player, completed 37 of 50 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns (raising his career total to 12, a new all-time Super Bowl record), including the game-winning three-yarder to Julian Edelman with 4:50 remaining in regulation time.  But it was undrafted rookie defensive back Malcolm Bulter, with 20 seconds left, stepped in front of intended receiver Ricardo Lockett and intercepted Russell Wilson's pass to seal the Patriots' fourth Super Bowl triumph.  Both Tom Terrific and New England head coach Bill Belichick have now won four Super Bowls each, the former equaling the record shared by Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana, while the latter now joins Chuck Noll as the only four-time Super Bowl-winning head coaches.
