Joel Ayayi and Drew Timme each scored 17 points on Tuesday night as the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs dominated the third-seeded Saint Mary's Gaels 84-66 to win their 17th West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament championship and an automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA tournament, more than offsetting 27 points from the Gaels' Jordan Ford.

Gaels Prove Too Powerful For Slumping Pilots

Malik Fitts scored 27 points while Jordan Ford added 21 on Thursday night as the Saint Mary's Gaels (19-4 overall, 6-2 in WCC play) dominated the struggling Portland Pilots (9-14, 1-7) 86-64 at home.

Tahirou Diabate topped the Pilots, who have now dropped six successive contests, with 18 points.

GAELS UPEND ZAGS FOR WCC TOURNEY CROWN

At Las Vegas:

Jordan Ford scored 17 points as second-seeded Saint Mary's (22-11) knocked off top-seeded Gonzaga (30-3) 60-47 in Tuesday championship game of the West Coast Conference's men's basketball tournament to claim the conference's automatic NCAA tournament berth, ending the Bulldogs' six-year reign as WCC tourney champs.

Pilots Grounded Again

Malik Fitts scored 17 points on Thursday as the Saint Mary's Gaels (20-10 overall, 11-4 in WCC play) overpowered the visiting Portland Pilots (7-23, 0-15) 65-48.

Marvin Shaver, Jr. was the only Pilot who scored in double figures with 13 as Portland is now one of four Division I men's teams still winless in conference play (alongside the SEC's Vanderbilt, Tulane of the AAC, and Chicago State of the WAC).

Jock Landale scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Saturday as the Saint Mary's Gaels (#15 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls; 25-4 overall, 14-2 in WCC play) outlasted the Portland Pilots (10-19, 4-12) 73-61 on the road.

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 22 points while Przemek Karnowski added 15 on Tuesday night as the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (32-1; #4 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls) smacked the second-seeded Saint Mary's Gaels (28-4; #19 AP, #18 Coaches) 74-56 for their fifth consecutive West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament championship.

The Zags will be playing in their 19th consecutive NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Jazz Johnson, who scored 10 points, was the only Pilot who scored in double figures as Portland dropped its' 11th straight game.

Calvin Hermanson scored a career-high 27 points on Thursday night as the Saint Mary's Gaels (15-1 overall, 5-0 in WCC play; ranked #21 in the Associated Press poll, #22 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings) demolished the Portland Pilots (9-7, 2-1) 74-33 on the road.

The Gaels outrebounded the Pilots 50-16.

Emmett Naar scored 18 points while Joe Rahon's late bucket proved vital as the Saint Mary's Gaels (21-4 overall, 12-3 in WCC play) defeated the Portland Pilots (11-17, 5-10) 74-72 on the road on Thursday.

Stephen Holt scored 26 points (hitting four three-point shot along the way) on Thursday as the St. Mary's Gaels (21-9 overall, 11-6 in WCC play) held off the visiting Portland Pilots (15-14, 7-10) 70-61 despite 22 points and 17 rebounds from the Pilots' Thomas van der Mars.

Kelly Olynyk scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the top-ranked (both in the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls) Gonzaga Bulldogs (31-2) defeated the St. Mary's Gaels (27-6) 65-51 Monday night to win the West Coast Conference Tournament championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, where the Bulldogs could end up as a regional #1 seed.

Matthew Dellavedova scored 23 points as the St. Mary's Gaels (19-4 overall, 8-1 in WCC play) annihilated the visiting Portland Pilots (8-16, 1-8) 77-42 on Saturday.

GAELS WIN OT THRILLER WITH ZAGS FOR WCC TOURNEY CROWN

Matthew Dellavedova scored 22 points as the Saint Mary's Gaels (27-5) defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs (25-6; ranked #24 in the AP media poll) 78-74 in overtime to win the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament's championship game on Monday night.  This marked the first time that the Gaels claimed both the regular-season and conference tourney title in the same season.  St. Mary's were top-seeded in the tournament with the Zags as the second seed.  

Gaels Get Back On Winning Track After Dismembering Feckless Pilots In Portland

At Portland, Oregon:


Clint Steindl scored 15 points while Rob Jones added 12 (to go with his 13 rebounds) as St. Mary's (24-5 overall, 13-2 in WCC play) ended a string of three losses in their last four games on Thursday with a 70-43 thumping of the home-standing Portland Pilots (6-22, 3-12), who have now lost four straight and ten of their last eleven starts.  The Gaels assured themselves of no worse than a tie for the West Coast Conference regular-season championship.
