Jaylin Arlington scored 15 points (from five three-pointers) as the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (8-4) defeated the visiting Portland State Vikings (3-7) 78-66 on Tuesday.

Ducks Overcome 12-Point Halftime Deficit, Knock Off 'Bama

At Birmingham, Alabama:

Dillon Brooks scored 23 points while Tyler Dorsey converted four free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Oregon Ducks (10-2) wiped out a 12-point halftime deficit and overcame the Alabama Crimson Tide (7-3) 72-68 on Monday.  Justin Coleman's career-high 24 points paced the Tide.

The Ducks will take on Western Oregon on December 29 before heading to Corvallis to open Pac-12 Conference play against Oregon State on January 3.

Tess Tinkle scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Gary Payton II had a 19 point-7 rebound-3 steal night as the Oregon State Beavers (9-2) coasted to a 82-61 Monday home victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats (4-6)

The Beavers host arch-rival Oregon in a Civil War contest that would open Pac-12 Conference play on Sunday, January 3.

Miami Beach Bowl: Hilltoppers Erupt In Third Quarter, Overcome Bulls

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (12-2), with quarterback Brandon Doughty capping off his college career by throwing for 461 yards and three touchdowns, scored 28 points in the third quarter and held off the South Florida Bulls (8-5) 45-35 in Monday's Miami Beach Bowl, which was played at the Miami Marlins' baseball stadium.

New Orleans Bowl: Kenneth Dixon Carries La Tech Past Red Wolves

At New Orleans:

Kenneth Dixon gained 215 yards from scrimmage as he scored four touchdowns (9 and 59 yards via receptions; eight and four yards on the ground) as his 87 career touchdowns becoming, for the time being at least, the NCAA's career touchdown leader as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (9-4) defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves (9-4) 47-28 in Saturday's New Orleans Bowl, snapping ASU's eight-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs racked up 687 yards of total offensive yards.

Joel Bolomboy (who grabbed 17 rebounds) and Ryan Richardson each scored 18 points as the Weber State Wildcats (6-5) defeated the Portland Pilots (5-7) 92-82 in overtime at the Far West Classic, despite 26 points from the Pilots' Alec Wintering. 

PURPLE RAIDERS WIN HISTORIC 12TH NCAA D3 TITLE

At Salem, Virginia:

Quarterback Taurice Scott threw for three touchdowns and ran for another on Friday as the Mount Union (Ohio) Purple Raiders (15-0) won their 12th NCAA Division III national football championship, defeating St. Thomas of Minnesota (14-1) 49-35.

The Purple Raiders have now won more national football titles than any other team in any NCAA division.

The Redskins moved to Washington two years later.

AAFC Football In Brooklyn

Here's the cover for the program for the November 21, 1948 All-America Football Conference game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and visiting San Francisco 49ers.



These Brooklyn Dodgers are not to be confused with the same-named NFL team that played in Brooklyn from 1930-44 (they were renamed the Tigers in 1944---a year in which they lost all ten games), then merged with the Boston Yanks in 1945.

The AAFC Dodgers,  which had originally been owned by the publishers of Street and Smith sports magazines, were by 1948, owned by Walter O'Malley, owner of their much, much better known (and more successful) baseball namesakes.  Branch Rickey, president of the baseball club, was put in charge of the football team.

After three miserable seasons which saw numerous thousands of fans arriving at Ebbetts  Field disguised as empty seats, the Dodgers and New York Yankees (which was owned by ex-NFL owner Dan Topping, who was an owner of their baseball namesakes) merged in 1949 to become the Brooklyn-New York Yankees.  After the 1949 "merger" with the NFL, the Yankees' roster was basically divided between the New York Giants and New York Bulldogs, who were renamed the New York Yanks.

Here's the cover of the program for the October 16, 1932 contest at the old Polo Grounds between the New York Giants and the visiting Brooklyn Dodgers.

Chris "Red" Cagle, a running back for the Giants, is on the cover.



The Brooklyn Dodgers, who arrived in 1930 after relocating from Dayton, Ohio, would eventually be purchased by Dan Topping, who would be best remembered as owner of baseball's New York Yankees.

This is the same Dan Topping who defected after the 1945 season to the newly-formed All-America Football Conference and placed his New York Yankees football team at Yankee Stadium.

The Boston Braves club that would visit the Giants the following week would be renamed the Boston Redskins the following year, then move to Washington in 1937.

Colts Vs. Niners, 1948

Here's the cover for the program for the October 10, 1948 game between the Baltimore Colts and visiting San Francisco 49ers.

That was while both clubs were members of the All-America Football Conference.



Both teams, along with the Cleveland Browns, were welcomed into the National Football League in December, 1949 as part of the "merger" between the two leagues.

The original Colts franchise lasted three years (1947-50) in the AAFC, but only one (1950) in the NFL before going out of business.

A new Baltimore Colts franchise (the one now based in Indianapolis) came into existence in 1953, following the demise of the Dallas Texans, whose roster the new Colts inherited.

Vikings Fall At Home To Matadors

At Portland, Oregon:

Michael Warren scored eight of his fifteen points in the final eight minutes on Thursday night as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (3-7) held off the Portland State Vikings (3-6) 77-71 on the road, snapping a five-game losing streak.  The Vikings, despite Calaen Robinson's 21 points (on seven three-point buckets), dropped their fourth consecutive start.

Men's College Hoops: Ducks Fall Out Of Polls

Following their Saturday setback at Boise State, the Oregon Ducks fell out of both the Associated Press  and USA Today/Coaches men's college basketball polls.

They still have enough support in both polls in which they would, in each case, be ranked #28.

Again, no support in either poll for the Beaver State's other three men's Division I basketball programs.

Johnny Football, Browns Knock Off Niners At Home; San Fran Eliminated From Playoff Contention

At Cleveland:

Quarterback Johnny Manziel threw for 270 yards on Sunday, two of them to Gary Barnidge for a third-quarter touchdown as the Cleveland Browns (3-10) snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 24-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers (4-9).

The defeat eliminated the Niners officially from playoff contention.

Pilots Top Visiting Hornets

At Portland, Oregon:

Gabe Taylor and Alec Wintering each scored 17 points on Saturday night as the Portland Pilots defeated the visiting Sacramento State Hornets 81-73 in the lone Saturday victory by any of the four Oregon men's Division I basketball programs as Oregon, Oregon State, and Portland State all fell on the road.

Cody Demps topped the Hornets with 20 points.

Jayhawks Overcome 11-Point Halftime Deficit, Overpower Beavers

At Kansas City:

Wayne Selden scored 22 points while Frank Mason added 18 on Saturday as the Kansas Jayhawks (#2 in the Associated Press poll, #7 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 8-1) came back from an 11-point halftime deficit and downed the Oregon State Beavers (6-2) 82-67.  

Tres Tinkle scored 20 points (converting five three-pointers along the way) to pace the Beavers.

At Boise, Idaho:

Anthony Drmic scored 19 points as the Boise State Broncos (7-4) overcame an early ten-point deficit then held on to top the visiting Oregon Ducks (#24 in the Associated Press poll, #23 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings; 7-2) 74-72, despite 26 points from the guests' Dillon Brooks.

At Edwardsville, Illinois:

Yemi Makanjuola scored 20 points on Saturday as the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars (3-7) defeated the visiting Portland State Vikings (3-5) 74-64.

Broken Record: Navy Beats Army Again (14 In A Row Against Black Knights)

At Philadelphia:

Quarterback Keenan Reynolds (the game's Most Valuable Player) ran for two touchdowns (he has 85 career TDs, the most of any Division I player---FBS or FCS) and passed for another as Navy (#21 in the College Football Playoff rankings; 10-2) held off Army West Point (2-10) 21-17 in Saturday's 116th Army-Navy Game.

The victory was the Midshipmen's fourteenth straight over the Black Knights.

Navy won the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy as a result.  The Midshipmen now lead the series 60-49-7.

Marjorie Lord, Actress Who Played Danny Thomas' Second Wife On Classic Sitcom Series, R.I.P.

Marjorie Lord, the actress best remembered for portraying the second wife of entertainer (and also widowed) Danny Williams on The Danny Thomas Show from 1957 to 1964, passed away natural causes at her Beverly Hills, California home on November 28 at age 97.

It was following the departure of Jean Hagen (best remembered for playing the arrogant silent-screen actress Lina Lamont in the 1952 film classic "Singin' In The Rain"), who played Danny's first wife Margaret, in 1956, after the third season of Make Room For Daddy, that it was decided that Mr. Thomas' character, night club singer and comic Danny Williams, became a widower.

It was during that show's fourth season, its' last on ABC, that Miss Lord began playing the role of Kathy O'Hara, a widowed Irish nurse with a daughter (Danny had a son and daughter himself).  She and Danny fell in love and were wed on the show's fourth season (and ABC era) finale.

The series, by the time it moved to CBS (and into the old I Love Lucy 9:00 PM Monday night time slot, where it flourished in the ratings), was renamed The Danny Thomas Show and ran until 1964.

Danny, Marjorie, and the rest of the cast were re-assembled in 1970 when the series was revived on ABC as Make Room For Granddaddy. That revival lasted one season.

Married three times and widowed twice, Marjorie was the mother of actress Anne Archer (from her marriage to actor John Archer, which ended in divorce in 1955)

Hall-Of-Famer Dolph Schayes, 12-Time NBA All-Star, Played On Syracuse Nats 1955 Championship Team, R.I.P.

Dolph Schayes, one of the best players in the early years of the National Basketball Association, passed away on Thursday at age 87.

Mr. Schayes passed away after having been stricken with a severe infection, some six months after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Dolph averaged 18.5 points , 12.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 996 NBA games during a 15-year career (1949-64) with the Syracuse Nationals (who moved to Philadelphia and became the 76ers in 1963; Dolph actually began play with the Nats in 1948 when they were part of the old National Basketball League, which merged the following year with the Basketball Association of America to form the NBA).

He was a 12-time NBA All-Star player who defined the big man's role in the early days of the NBA. Dolph was a key player in the Nats' 1955 NBA championship team, along with Earl Lloyd and Johnny Kerr, amongst others.

Bonnie Lou, Rockabilly Singer Who Had Big Hit In '55 With "Daddy-O", R.I.P.

Bonnie Lou, the rockabilly singer who had a big hit in 1955 with "Daddy-O," passed away at a Cincinnati nursing home on Tuesday at age 91.

Born Mary Joan Kath in Towanda, Illinois, she began playing the violin and guitar as a youngster.  By age 16, the future Bonnie Lou was singing and playing on local radio stations in the Midwest.

At 17, Bonnie was signed to a contract to perform on the nationally-broadcast Brush Creek Follies.  On that radio show, she was known as Sally Carson and her group was known as The Rhythm Rangers. She became known for her yodeling.

By the 1940s, "Sally Carson" became known as "Bonnie Lou" and she became a popular radio performer.  She had been featured on a Cincinnati-based radio show that became The Midwestern Hayride.

In the 1950s, Bonnie signed with record companies and scored Top 10 Country and Western hits with "Tennessee Wig Walk" and "Seven Lonely Days."

By the mid '50s, Bonnie was recording rockabilly.  In 1955, her recording of "Daddy-O" reached #14 on Billboard's Pop Charts.

She would go on to become a fixture on local television in Cincinnati.

Ethan Telfair scored a season-high 24 points while Kyle Ingram scored the winning bucket with four seconds remaining as the Idaho State Bengals (3-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 66-65 road win over the Portland Pilots (4-6).

Ducks Too Much For Midshipmen At Pearl Harbor Invitational

At Honolulu:

Dillon Brooks scored 19 points on Monday while Dwayne Benjamin added 16 and Chris Boucher 14 (to go with his 14 rebounds) as the Oregon Ducks (7-1) defeated Navy (7-3) 67-47 in the Pearl Harbor Invitational.

The loss snapped the Midshipmen's seven-game winning streak.

Ducks Drop But Stay In Both Polls

After dropping a Friday night road decision to UNLV, the Oregon Ducks dropped several places but stayed in both the Associated Press (#24, down nine spots) and USA Today/Coaches (#23, down seven) men's college basketball polls.

As has been the case all season thus far, there's still no support for Oregon State, Portland, or Portland State in either poll.

Ducks Close Out Regular Season #15 in AP Poll, #14 In Coaches Poll

In the final Associated Press and USA Today/Amway Coaches  regular-season college football polls released on Sunday, the Oregon Ducks ranked #15 (same ranking as last week) and #14 (up two spots)  respectively.

TIMBERS HOLD OFF CREW IN COLUMBUS FOR FIRST MLS CUP TITLE AND 2016-17 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BERTH

At Columbus, Ohio:

In 20th annual MLS Cup Final, Diego Valeri (at 27 seconds, the earliest goal in the history of Major League Soccer's championship game) and Rodney Wallace (7') each scored a goal as the Portland Timbers, in the fifth season of their current existence, became the first club from Cascadia to win the MLS Cup title, 2-1 on the road over the Columbus Crew.

Kai Kamara scored for the Crew in the 18th minute.

With the victory, the Timbers qualified for a berth in the group stage of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League.

Niners Knock Off Bears In Chicago In OT

At Chicago:

After running for the game-tying touchdown late in regulation, quarterback Blaine Gabbert threw a 71-yard TD pass to Torrey Smith in overtime lift the San Francisco 49ers (4-8) to a 26-20 Sunday road victory over the Chicago Bears (5-7).

It was the Niners' first regular-season victory in Chicago against the Bears since 1974, though San Francisco defeated Chicago at Soldier Field in the 1988 NFC title game (en route to the first of back-to-back Super Bowl titles).

Vikings Not Much Of Match For Cougs

At Pullman, Washington:

Josh Hawkinson scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Sunday as the Washington State Cougars (5-1) dominated the visiting Portland State Vikings (3-4) 91-67.

Clemson, 'Bama, MSU, Sooners Make College Football Playoff; Ducks Finish At #15

The Clemson Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Michigan State Spartans, and Oklahoma Sooners have qualified for this season's College Football Playoff according to the final rankings that were released on Sunday.

Top-seeded Clemson will take on #4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl game at Miami in one national semifinal contest while second-ranked Alabama will battle #3 Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl at Arlington, Texas in the other semifinal.  Both games will be contested on New Year's Eve.

The winners will face off at Glendale, Arizona for the national title on January 11.

The Stanford Cardinal, bound for the Rose Bowl against fifth-ranked Iowa, were the highest-ranked Pac-12 team at #6 (up one spot from last week), with the Oregon Ducks at #15 (up one), the Utah Runnin' Utes at #22 (up two), and the Southern California Trojans at #25 (down five).

At Santa Clara, California:

Christian McCaffrey ran for 207 yards and a touchdown, threw a touchdown pass, and caught another as the Stanford Cardinal (#7 in the College Football Playoff rankings; 11-2) defeated the  Southern California Trojans (#20 CFP; 8-5) 41-22 in the Pac-12 Conference Championship Game, more than likely landing the Cardinal in the upcoming Rose Bowl.

Broncos Top Pilots On Road

At Portland, Oregon:

Anthony Drmic scored 24 points while James Webb III grabbed 14 rebounds on Saturday night as the Boise State Broncos (5-4) defeated the Portland Pilots (4-5) 81-71 on the road.

Alec Wintering paced the Pilots with 26 points. 

GP2 Leads Beavers Past Wolf Pack

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Gary Payton II scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and made two steals (making it a school-record 38 straight games with at least one of those) on Saturday as the Oregon State Beavers (6-1) defeated the visiting Nevada Wolf Pack (5-3) 66-62, despite a career-high 24 points from the guests' D. J. Fenner.

Olaf Schaftenaar scored 19 points while Drew Eubanks added 17 points to go with his nine rebounds on Wednesday as the Oregon State Beavers (6-1) defeated the visiting Loyola Marymount Lions (4-3) 79-70, despite 22 points off the bench from the guests' Adom Jacko.

Alec Wintering scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out six assists, and came up with three steals on Wednesday as the Portland Pilots (4-4) held off the home-standing Portland State Vikings (3-3) 78-72.

MALICE IN SLUMBERLAND-Phantasy (Screen Gems/Columbia, 1942)

From 1942, here's a Phantasy cartoon from Columbia Pictures' Screen Gems studio entitled "Malice in Slumberland."  In this one, a dripping basement faucet is preventing someone from getting some sleep.  With animation by Ray Patterson and music by Eddie Kilfeather, this cartoon was produced by Dave Fleischer and directed by Alec Geiss.

CFP Rankings: Top Five Stay The Same; Buckeyes At #6; Ducks Inch Up To #16

The top four in the College Football Playoff rankings remained the same on Tuesday (Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, Iowa) with Michigan State still at #5 and Ohio State and Stanford each climbing two spots to #6 and #7 (as the highest-ranked Pac-12 Conference team), respectively.

The Oregon Ducks, whose regular season ended this past Friday with their Civil War win over arch-rival Oregon State, climbed up a spot to #16.

Southern California, who defeated UCLA last Saturday for the right to take on Stanford in this coming Saturday's Pac-12 title game, found themselves back in the rankings at #20 while Utah dropped a spot to #24 despite their victory over the weekend over Colorado.

From 1943, here are the Fox and Crow starring in a Columbia Pictures-released Screen Gems Color Rhapsody Technicolor cartoon "Slay It With Flowers."  In this one, the Fox is trying to plant a Victory Garden, but the Crow wants that corn.  With original opening and closing titles, plus  story by Leo Salkin, animation by Phil Duncan, and music by Eddie Kilfeather (and not to mention uncredited voice characterizations by Frank Graham), this cartoon was produced by Dave Fleischer and directed by Bob Wickersham.
