Welcome to another Saturday program here at Bob's House.
Let's start with "Mass Mouse Meeting," a 1943 Columbia Pictures (Screen Gems) Phantasy cartoon. In this one, the mouse assigned to place a bell around a cat's neck spends about four minutes talking to the feline about his new collar. With story by Dun Roman, animation by Chic Otterstrom, and music by Paul Worth, this cartoon was produced by Dave Fleischer and directed by Alec Geiss.
Next, it's time for Buster Keaton in the 1934 Educational Pictures short, "The Gold Ghost." In this Star Comedy Special, Buster, who was dumped by his girlfriend, drives west and winds up in the ghost town of Vulture City, where he appoints himself sheriff. With story by Ewart Adamson and Nick Barrows, adaptation and continuity by Ernest Pagano and Charles Lamont, photography by Dwight Warren (ASC) and sound by Karl Zint, this E. H. Allen production was directed by Charles Lamont. Distributed by Fox Film Corporation. Shown in two parts.
Due to unavailability of video, our originally scheduled presentation of the fourth chapter of Sea Raiders, our 1941 Universal Pictures serial with the Dead End Kids and Little Tough Guys will not be seen.
In its' place, we present a sports-oriented travelogue, "Caribbean Playgrounds," a 1955 entry in the Warner Brothers Sports Parade series. This film, made in WarnerColor, with sound by David Forrest and music by Howard Jackson, was written by Charles Tedford, edited by Rex Steele, narrated by Art Gilmore, and photographed and directed by Andre de LaVarre.

From 1955, we bring you, "The Big Bluff." In this one, a scheming opportunist learns that a wealthy widow has a terminal heart condition, so he seduces and marries her. Playing the part of the doting and caring husband, he hides an affair with an exotic dancer while waiting for his wife's demise. When her condition changes and it seems she would not pass away on her own, the conniving man takes matters in his own hands. Starring John Bromfield, Martha Vickers, Robert Hutton, and Rosemary Bowe. This picture, with screenplay by Fred Freiberger and story by Mindret Lord, was produced and directed by W. Lee Wilder.

NCAA South: Lehigh Mountain Hawks Stun #2-Seeded Duke; Musketeers Take Tight One From Fighting Irish
Action from the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's South Regional continued on Friday with two games, both at the Greensboro (North Carolina) Coliseum.
In the opener, C. J. McCollum scored 30 points as #15-seeded Lehigh (27-7) shocked the second-seeded Duke Blue Devils (27-7) 75-70. It marked only the second time that a fifteenth-seeded team defeated a #2 seed---the second time it happened on Friday. It was the Mountain Hawks' first NCAA Tournament win.
In the nightcap, Tu Holloway (who scored the go-ahead basket with 21.3 seconds remaining) scored 25 points as #10-seeded Xavier (22-12) defeated #7-seeded Notre Dame (22-12) 67-63 for the right to take on Lehigh this coming Sunday.

In the first of two games at the CenturyLink Center, Bradley Beal scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the #7-seeded Florida Gators (24-10) manhandled the #10-seeded Virginia Cavaliers (22-10) 71-45. Casey Prather also scored 14 points (a career high) for the Gators.
In the nightcap, Kyle O'Quinn scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the fifteenth-seeded Norfolk State Spartans (26-9) became only the fifth #15 seed to defeat a #2 seed with their 86-84 stunner over Missouri (30-5).

Lorenzo Brown added 17 points, C. J. Leslie 15, and Scott Wood 10 to the NC State coffers. Jamaal Franklin scored 23 points for the Aztecs.
In the second contest, Jason Clark scored 21 points while Otto Porter added 16 as the third-seeded Georgetown Hoyas (24-8) defeated the 14th-seeded Belmont Bruins (27-8) 74-59.

At Louisville, Kentucky:
In the first of two games at the KFC Yum! Center, Terrence Jones scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the top-seeded Kentucky Wildcats (33-2) took care of the #16-seeded Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (16-19).
In the nightcap, Chris Allen scored 20 points as the eighth-seeded Iowa State Cyclones (23-10), with four players in double-figures ended Connecticut's one-year reign as national champions with a 77-64 win over the ninth-seeded Huskies for the right to face top-seeded (both region and overall) Kentucky on Saturday.
At Portland, Oregon:
In the first of two Rose Garden contests, Bradford Burgess, who scored 16 points, hit a three-pointer with 93 seconds remaining as the 12th-seeded Virginia Commonwealth Rams (29-6) defeated the #5-seeded Wichita State Shockers (26-6) 62-59.

In the second contest, Jae Crowder scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the #3-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles (26-7) defeated the #14-seeded BYU Cougars (26-9) 88-68. Marquette will take on Murray State on Saturday.

CBI: Beavers Rack Up 20th Win By Besting Leathernecks
At Corvallis, Oregon:
Jared Cunningham scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half as the Oregon State Beavers defeated the visiting Western Illinois Leathernecks 80-59 in opening-round action from the College Basketball Invitational on Wednesday. The win was the 20th of the season for the Beavers, the first time that has happened since 1989-90 (the last time Oregon State reached the NCAA Tournament).
The Beavers will host Texas Christian on Monday night.

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament got under way with two games, both played at Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday.
In the opener, T. J. Price's three-point play with 33 seconds left enabled Western Kentucky (16-18), the only school to enter the field of 68 with a losing record, to complete a comeback after having trailed by 16 points with 4:52 remaining, then hang on for a 59-58 win over Mississippi Valley State (21-13). Derrick Gordon scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hilltoppers, who will take on South Region top-seeded Kentucky (who happens to be the top overall seed in the tournament) on Thursday at Louisville, Kentucky. Kevin Burwell scored 20 points for the Delta Devils.

For starters, let's go back to 1945 for "The Dippy Diplomat," starring Woody Woodpecker. In this one, Wally Walrus is preparing a big barbecue for Ambassador Ivan Awfulitch. But Woody has other ideas. This Walter Lantz-produced cartoon, released by Universal Pictures, with story by Ben Hardaway and Milt Schaffer, animation by Pat Matthews and Grim Natwick, and music by Darrell Calker, was directed by James (Shamus) Culhane.
Next, W. C. Fields stars in the 1930 RKO Radio Pictures short subject "The Golf Specialist." This short was produced by Louis Brock and directed by Monte Brice.
Next, we turn to the third chapter of our 1941 Universal Pictures serial, Sea Raiders with the Dead End Kids and Little Tough Guys.

The semifinal round of the Pacific-12 Conference men's basketball tournament took place in Los Angeles with two games contested on Friday.
In the opener, Kyle Fogg scored 22 points as the Arizona Wildcats (23-10) defeated the Oregon State Beavers (19-14) 72-61.
In the nightcap, Carlon Brown and Andre Roberson each scored 17 points as the Colorado Buffaloes (22-11) knocked off the California Golden Bears (24-9) 70-59.

Harry Wendelstedt, Long-Time MLB Umpire, R. I. P.
Longtime Major League Baseball umpire Harry Wendelstedt, who worked in five World Series during a 33-year career, passed away on Friday at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center at Daytona Beach, near the umpiring school he had run for more than three decades, at age 73.
Mr. Wendelstedt had been diagnosed with a brain tumor a number of years ago.
Harry also called seven National League Championship Series and four All-Star Games and was behind the plate for five no-hitters.

GAELS WIN OT THRILLER WITH ZAGS FOR WCC TOURNEY CROWN

Matthew Dellavedova scored 22 points as the Saint Mary's Gaels (27-5) defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs (25-6; ranked #24 in the AP media poll) 78-74 in overtime to win the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament's championship game on Monday night. This marked the first time that the Gaels claimed both the regular-season and conference tourney title in the same season. St. Mary's were top-seeded in the tournament with the Zags as the second seed.

With story and screenplay by Clyde Bruckman and Felix Adler, photography by Harry Davis (ASC), and editing by Arthur Seid, this short subject was produced and directed by Jules White.

Claudia Drake, Edmund MacDonald, Tim Ryan, Esther Howard, and Pat Gleason were also in the cast. With screenplay and original story by Martin Goldsmith, music by Leo Erdody, and photography by Benjamin H. Kline (ASC), this motion picture was produced by Leon Fromkess and directed by Edgar G. Ulmer.

Two more games were played in the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament on Friday in Las Vegas:
In the opener, Michael Williams scored 19 points while Cody Doolin added 16 as the #5-seeded San Francisco Dons (20-12) held off the #4-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions (19-12) 67-60. The Dons will face top-seeded St. Mary's in Saturday's opening semifinal contest.
In the nightcap, Noah Harsock (who scored 19 points) and Brandon Davis (who added 16) combined for 27 second-half points as the third-seeded BYU Cougars (25-7) held off the stubborn sixth-seeded San Diego Toreros (13-18) 73-68. The Cougars will get their shot at second-seeded Gonzaga in Saturday's second semifinal.

A late 1960s Kool-Aid commercial with Bugs Bunny (voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc) and three of the Monkees (Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, and Mike Naismith).

Davy Jones, a Manchester, England-born former jockey and stage actor who would be best remembered as a member of the Monkees, passed away on Wednesday at his Indiantown, Florida home at the age of 66 from a heart attack.
Mr. Jones was an important member of the first, and maybe, best of the pop groups made for television in the wake of the popularity of the Beatles.
The Monkees, a half-hour sitcom from Columbia Pictures starring the group (which, besides Davy, also included Mike Naismith, Peter Tork, and Micky Dolenz) ran two years on NBC from 1966 to 1968, with the group breaking up not long after the series was canceled.
The group had a number of hit recordings including "I'm a Believer" and "Last Train to Clarksville."
Davy himself provided the vocals on "Daydream Believer."

The conference tournament begins on Saturday and the third-seeded Vikings will host sixth-seeded Montana State in the first round.

I've decided to institute a new format to our weekly Saturday serials by adding a cartoon, a comedy short, and a feature each weekend.
In this July 1946 Paramount Newsreel, we see highlights from the American League's 12-0 annihilation of the National League in that year's Baseball All-Star Game, as well as film footage of a deadly B-17 crash near Holyoke, Massachusetts that claimed the lives of 25 GIs, and Howard Hughes' near-fatal crash of his experimental XF-11 airplane.
Next, a Paramount 1946 Noveltoon entitled "The Stupidstitous Cat," which introduced Buzzy the Crow to the Famous Studios roster.
With animation by Graham Place and John Walworth, story by Carl Meyer and Jack Ward, scenics by Anton Loeb, and musical arrangement by Winston Sharples, this cartoon, which involved a superstitious cat who was hoping that eating fresh crow meat would give him good luck, was directed by Seymour Kneitel.
Next, a 1938 Educational Pictures two-reel comedy (distributed theatrically by 20th Century-Fox) starring Willie Howard in "The Miss They Missed." Produced by Al Christie, written by Billy K. Wells, and photographed by George Webber.
Next, "The Raider Strikes," the opening chapter of our 1941 Universal Pictures serial, Sea Raiders with the Dead End Kids and the Little Tough Guys. Billy Halop, Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell, Bernard Pulsey, Hal E. Chester, Joe Recht, William Hall, John McGuire, Mary Field, Edward Keane, Marcia Ralston, Reed Hadley, Stanley Blystone, Richard Alexander, and Ernie Adams were featured in the cast. With original screenplay by Clarence Upson Young and Paul Huston and photography by William Sickner (ASC), and with Henry MacRae as associate producer, this 12-chapter serial was directed by Ford Beebe and John Rawlins.

With photography by Lucien Andriot and music by Carmen Dragon, this 1947 film, with screenplay by Edmund H. North (based on Edward Sheldon's play) was produced by Jack Chertok and directed by Robert Stevenson.

Billy Strange, Musician, Songwriter, R.I.P.
Billy Strange, a songwriter, guitarist, and arranger who aided the hit-making efforts of Elvis Presley, Frank and Nancy Sinatra, and the Beach Boys, passed away in Nashville on Wednesday at age 81.
Mr. Strange wrote the musical arrangement for the Nancy Sinatra hit "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'." He directed standup bass player Chuck Burghofer to play the song's signature sliding descent.
Billy helped arranged "Somethin' Stupid," a hit duet for Nancy and her pop Frank.
As for Elvis, he contributed hit compositions including "A Little Less Conversation" and "Memories."
Billy also wrote the Chubby Checker hit from 1962 "Limbo Rock."
