The Pats finished at 5-9, in the basement of the AFL's Eastern Division with Lou Saban as head coach.

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Stephen Thompson, Jr. scored 22 points while Tres Tinkle added 21 and Ethan Thompson (Stephen 's brother) 20 as the Oregon State Beavers (12-6 overall, 4-2 in Pac-12 play) downed the visiting Washington State Cougars (8-11, 1-5) 90-77 on Thursday.

C.J. Ellerby topped the Cougs with 21 points while Robert Franks added 20.

Vikings Clip Eagles' Wings

Holland Woods (who dished out eleven assists) and Jamie Orme each scored 15 points on Thursday night as the Portland State Vikings (7-11 overall, 2-5 in Big Sky Conference play) snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the visiting Eastern Washington Eagles (5-13, 3-4) 78-65, more than offsetting a career-high 26 points from the guests' Jacob Davidson.

Dons Whack Struggling Pilots In Frisco

Matt McCarthy came off the bench to score 20 points on Thursday as the San Francisco Dons (17-3 overall, 5-1 in WCC play) dominated the struggling Portland Pilots (7-14, 0-6), losers of seven straight contests, 83-61 at home.

At Eugene, Oregon:

It was the first Super Bowl to be contested on artificial turf.

Mariano Rivera Makes History

Four players were elected Tuesday to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Longtime New York Yankees reliever, arguably the best ever,  Mariano Rivera becomes the first player to be elected unanimously.

Now-deceased former Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay was elected posthumously.

Seven-time Golden Glove winning pitcher---and Mr. Rivera's Yankees teammate Mike Mussina was also elected.

Longtime Seattle Mariners designated hitter Edgar Martinez, on his final try, also was elected.

They join former relief pitching great Lee Smith and right fielder Harold Baines when they are enshrined this summer at Cooperstown, New York.

Super Bowl IV

Here's the front cover of the offficial program of the final AFL-NFL World Championship Game, also known as Super Bowl IV, contested at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans on January 11, 1970 as the Kansas City Chiefs gained a 2-2 split of the pre-merger Super Bowls for the AFL by beating the NFL's Minnesota Vikings 23-7.

The New York Jets gained the AFL its' first Super Bowl title by knocking off the Baltimore Colts 16-7.

NFL Playoffs: Rams and Pats Win Conference Titles In OT On Road To Set Up Rematch Of SB XXXVI

Both National Football League conference championship games were contested on Sunday.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:

At New Orleans:

Greg Zuerlein kick four field goals, including the game-winner from 57 yards out in overtime as the Los Angeles Rams, who had never led during regulation, knocked off the New Orleans Saints 26-24 on the road to win their first National Football Conference title in seventeen years.

The Rams will be playing in their fourth Super Bowl.



AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:

At Kansas City, Missouri:

Rex Burkhead scored two touchdowns, including the game winner in overtime as the New England Patriots advanced to their third straight Super Bowl (and eleventh overall) by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 37-31 on the road.

The Patriots will be gunning for their record-tying sixth Super Bowl title, all under head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady.

Sony Michel, who ran for three touchdowns in the divisional playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers, ran for two more in the AFC title game.



Super Bowl LIII will be played on Sunday, February 3 at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium (3:30 PM Pacific Time, CBS).

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (5-12 overall, 3-4 in Big Sky play) defeated the visiting Portland State Vikings (6-11, 1-5) 82-75 on Saturday.

Jonathan Andre paced the Lumberjacks with 21 points.

Holland Woods topped the struggling Vikes with 21 points of his own.

Zags Ground Pilots In Portland

At Portland, Oregon:

Rui Hachimura scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the visiting Gonzaga Bulldogs (#5 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls; 18-2 overall, 5-0 in WCC play), with seven players (including all five starters) scoring in double figures grounded the struggling Portland Pilots (7-13, 0-5), now losers of six straight games,  89-66.

Sun Devils Knock Off Visiting Ducks

At Tempe, Arizona:

Zylan Cheatham scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds on Saturday as the Arizona State Sun Devils (13-5 overall, 4-2 in Pac-12 play) used a 19-0 second-half run to run away and hide from the visiting Oregon Ducks (11-7, 2-3) 78-64.

Payton Prichard topped the Ducks with 20 points.

Rob Edwards, who scored 13 points, canned two clutch free throws with 12.1 seconds remaining on Thursday night to held the Arizona State Sun Devils (12-5 overall, 3-2 in Pac-12 play) held off the visiting Oregon State Beavers (11-5, 3-1) 70-67.

Five Sun Devils scored in double figures.

Tres Tinkle and Ethan Thompson each scored 21 points to pace the Beavers, who suffered their first conference defeat of the season.

Here's the front cover of the official program for the Dallas Texans' American Football League home game against the Buffalo Bills, set to be contested at the Cotton Bowl on September 30, 1962.

The Texans, who went on to win the AFL title, won the game 41-21 in front of 25, 500 fans.

The Texans, after three years of battling the NFL's Cowboys,  moved to Kansas City the following year and became the Chiefs.

After that season, the Seahawks, who won only three games (two against Buffalo) were dropped from the All-America Football Conference, replaced by the original version of the Baltimore Colts.

In 1947, the Bisons were renamed the Bills.

At Eugene, Oregon:

Paul White and Louis King each scored 19 points on Sunday as the Oregon Ducks (10-6 overall, 1-2 in Pac-12 play) garnered their first conference win of the season, 81-60 over visiting Southern California (9-8, 2-2).

The divisional round of the NFL Playoffs concluded on Sunday with two games.

At Foxborough, Massachusetts:

Running Back Sony Michel ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns as the New England Patriots raced out to a 35-7 lead before halftime, then coasted to a 41-28 home victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in a divisional playoff game.

The Patriots will make their NFL-record eighth consecutive conference championship game appearance when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday at 3:40 PM Pacific Time (CBS).

Drew Brees threw for two touchdowns while Marcus Lattimore intercepted two Nick Foles passes as the New Orleans Saints overcame an early 14-point deficit and ended the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl title defense by holding off the visitors 20-14 in a divisional playoff contest.

Next Sunday, the Saints will host the Los Angeles Rams for the NFC Championship at 12:05 PM Pacific Time (FOX).

Early Niners Game Program

The game was played at Kesar Stadium, which was the 49ers' original home for their 25 seasons of existence.

The Bisons were renamed the Buffalo Bills in 1947 and not related to the same-name club that started play in 1960.

The Division Round of the NFL Playoffs opened on Saturday with two games.

Running back Damien Williams ran for 129 yards and a touchdown as the Kansas City Chiefs downed the visiting Indianapolis Colts 31-13 in a divisional playoff game.


The Chiefs will host next Sunday's AFC Championship Game (their first title game appearance in 25 years) against the winner of Sunday's Los Angeles Chargers-New England Patriots contest.

At Los Angeles:

C.J. Anderson ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns while fellow running back Todd Gurley garnered 115 yards on the ground and another score as the Los Angeles Rams racked up a franchise playoff-record 273 rushing yards in holding off the visiting Dallas Cowboys 30-22 for their first playoff victory in 14 years.

The Rams will play in next Sunday's NFC Championship Game, at home against Philadelphia, or in New Orleans, depending on who wins Sunday's Eagles-Saints game.

Vikings Upend Griz In Missoula In OT ThrillerH

At Missoula, Montana:

Holland Woods, who scored 28 points, hit two clutch free throws on Saturday as the Portland State Vikings (6-8 overall, 1-2 in Big Sky play) snapped their five-game losing streak by knocking off the Montana Grizzlies (10-5, 3-1) 77-74 in overtime.

Kendal Manuel paced the Grizzlies with 22 points (hitting all ten free throws).

It was the Vikings' first victory in Missoula since 2008---when they skewered the Griz in their biggest margin of victory ever over a Division I opponent (108-56).

Beavers Knock Off Ducks On Road In Civil War Game----And Conference Opener

At Eugene, Oregon:

Tres Tinkle scored 28 points on Saturday as the Oregon State Beavers (9-4 overall, 1-0 in Pac-12 play) knocked off the Oregon Ducks (9-5, 0-1) 77-72 on the road in the latest edition of the Civil War basketball game, which also acted as the Pac-12 Conference opener for both schools.

The victory marked the first conference-opening victory for the Beavers since 1993.

At Los Angeles:

Joe Quintana scored a career-high 19 points on Saturday as Loyola Marymount (13-3 overall, 1-1 in WCC play) defeated the visiting Portland Pilots (7-9, 0-1) 76-64.

Jo Jo Walker scored 20 points to pace the Pilots, who dropped their West Coast Conference opener.

Colts and Cowboys Take Saturday Wins As NFL Playoffs Open

The National Football League Playoffs opened on Saturday with two games.
