Injury-Ravaged Niners Dominate Jets In Jersey For First Win Of Season

At East Rutherford, New Jersey:  

Despite losing defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas to potentially serious knee injuries in the first half on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers (1-1) downed the New York Jets (0-2) 31-13 on the road on Sunday.  Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and running back Raheem Mostert also left the game with injuries.

Jimmy G. completed 14 of 16 passes for two touchdowns before leaving the game at halftime with an ankle injury.  As for Mr. Mostert, Raheem ran eighty yards for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage; he ran for 92 yards overall.  Jordan Reed caught both of Mr. Garoppolo's touchdown passed.

Jerick McKinnon, who missed the last two seasons due to knee injuries, ran for 77 yards and scored a TD.

/Running back Bilal Powell ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns (including the overtime game-winner from 19 yards) on Sunday as the New York Jets (4-9) erased a fourteen-point halftime deficit and upended the San Francisco 49ers (1-12) 23-17, despite a career-high 193 yards on the ground by the Niners' Carlos Hyde.

The Niners' franchise-record losing streak has now reached 12 games and they have now lost six straight home games.

Carlos Rogers returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown as the San Francisco 49ers (3-1) ran for 245 yards (Colin Kaepernick from seven yards, Frank Gore from two, and Kendall Hunter from a yard out as each scored a touchdown) as they dismantled the New York Jets (2-2) 34-0 on the road in Sunday National Football League action.

At Indianapolis:

Peyton Manning threw for three touchdowns (to Austin Collie [16 yards]in the second quarter, Pierre Garcon [4 yards] in the third, and Dallas Clark [15 yards] in the fourth) as the Indianapolis Colts erased a second-quarter 11-point deficit to defeat the New York Jets 30-17 Sunday to win the American Football Conference Championship. The Colts are heading for their second Super Bowl in four years.

At New Orleans:

Drew Brees threw for three touchdowns (one of 38 yards to Pierre Thomas in the first quarter [he also ran 9 yards for a score], a 9-yarder in the second quarter to Devery Henderson, and a 5-yarder to Reggie Bush in the fourth) and Garrett Hartley kicked the game-winning field goal with 4:45 expired in the first overtime period as the New Orleans Saints defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 to capture the National Football Conference championship on Sunday. The Saints are heading to the Super Bowl for the first time in their forty-three year history.

The Saints and Colts battle each other on February 7 in Super Bowl XLIV, to be played at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.

Jets Shock Bolts In San Diego

At San Diego:

Running back Shonn Greene ran for 128 yards, 53 of those in what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown run in the fourth quarter as the New York Jets ended the San Diego Chargers' 11-game winning streak with a 17-14 road victory Sunday in an AFC divisional playoff game.

The Jets will head to Indianapolis for next Sunday's AFC Championship Game (12:00 Noon Pacific Time/CBS).

Jets Ground Bengals In Playoff Opener

The National Football League playoffs commenced Saturday with two Wild-Card games, one in each conference.

At Cincinnati:

Quarterback Mark Sanchez completed 12 of 15 passes for 182 yards and a rating of 139.4 and running back Shonn Greene ran for 135 yards, including 39 for a touchdown as the New York Jets defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 24-14 on the road in an AFC Wild Card playoff game.

The Jets will play next weekend on the road. Whom and where they will play will depend on the results of Sunday's Baltimore-New England contest. If the Ravens win, the Jets will travel to San Diego. It the Patriots win, New York travels to Indianapolis.
