Ray Price, the Country and Western music legend best remembered for hits such as "Crazy Arms," "Release Me,", "Heartaches By The Number," and "For The Good Times," passed away on Monday at his home near Mount Pleasant, Texas at age 87.
Mr. Price, who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (which had spread to liver, intestines, and lungs), had stopped aggressive treatments last week to receive hospice care at home.
Ray had more than 100 hits on the Country and Western charts (seven of them topping out at #1), several of them crossed over onto the pop music charts.
His salad days were during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Ray was one of the last surviving links to the era of the original Hank Williams.
In the 1950s, Ray was among the leaders in traditional (and honky-tonk) country music. By the 1960s, his music became more polished as his recordings started including an orchestral string section, which was what he used in his famous 1970 #1 country hit (which reached #11 on Billboard Magazine's pop chart), the Kris Kristofferson-penned "For The Good Times."
