NCAA South: Debutant Eagles Shock Hoyas; Tar Heels Top Nova, Set Up Matchup With Jayhawks (Who Outlast Plucky Hilltoppers); Aztecs Top Sooners;Gophers Too Much For UCLA

Six games were played on Friday in the NCAA Men's Baskteball Tournament's South Regional as second-round play continued.

At Philadelphia:

In the first of two South Regional games contested at the Wells Fargo Center, Sherwood Brown scored 24 points and Bernard Thompson added 23 as the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (25-10), the tournament's lone debutant, in only their second season as a team eligible for Division I postseason play, became only the seventh #15 seed to knock off a #2 seed by defeating Georgetown (25-7) 78-68.

In the second contest, Jamaal Franklin scored 21 points as the seventh-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (23-10) topped the Oklahoma Sooners (20-12) 70-55, despite 22 points from the Sooners' Romero Osby.

At Kansas City, Missouri:

In the first of two South Region contests at the Sprint Center, P.J. Hairston scored 23 points as the #8-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels (25-10) defeated the #9-seeded Villanova Wildcats (20-14) 78-71.

In the second match, Jeff Withey scored 17 points as the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks (30-5) survived a scare from #16-seeded Western Kentucky (20-16) 64-57.

At Austin, Texas:

In the opening game at the Frank Erwin Center, Erik Murphy had 18 points to lead four players in double digits as the #3-seeded Florida Gators (27-7) dominated the fourteenth-seeded Northwestern State Demons (23-9) 79-47.

In the nightcap, Andre Hollins scored 28 points as the 11th-seeded Minnesota Golden Gophers (21-12) dominated the #6-seeded UCLA Bruins (25-10) 83-63.
