Stanley Cup Playoffs: Lightning Penguins, Blues Take Series Openers

The National Hockey League's Stanley Cup Playoffs commenced on Wednesday with three games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Tampa, Florida:

Nikita Kucherov scored once in each of the first two periods and Alex Killorn scored the game winner in the third period while Ben Bishop stopped 34 of 36 shots as the Tampa Bay Lightning took the opening game of their conference quarterfinal series with the visiting Detroit Red Wings 3-2.

At Pittsburgh:

Patric Hornqvist delivered a hat trick (one goal on the power play, another one an empty netter) as the Pittsburgh Penguins downed the visiting New York Rangers 5-2 in their series opener, which saw Rangers' goaltender Henrik Lundqvist get injured.



WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At St. Louis:

David Backes scored the winning goal 9:04 into overtime as the St. Louis Blues---with Brian Elliot saving all 35 shots----defeated the defending champions Chicago Blackhawks 1-0 at home in the opening contest of their best-of-seven conference quarterfinal series.
