Frederic Piquionne scored four goals (2', 17', 34', 45'+2) in the first half on Wednesday as the Portland Timbers crushed the visiting Wilmington Hammerheads (who play in the third-division USL Pro League) 5-1 to advance to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament.
The Timbers, who did their best to avoid a repeat of last year's debacle, losing at home in overtime to amateur club Cal FC, are scheduled to host the Tampa Bay Rowdies (of the second-division North American Soccer League), who knocked off Portland's arch-rivals, the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday.
