The Stanley Cup Playoffs' Round of 16 is set to continue on Wednesday in Canada with five games.

Game #1:

In a contest postponed from Tuesday due to the Tampa Bay-Columbus five-overtime thriller, Patrice Bergeron scored the game winner, 73 seconds into the second overtime period as the Boston Bruins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in the opening game of their best-of-seven quarterfinal-round series.

Game #2:

Josh Bailey's third-period shorthanded goal proved to be the game winner as the New York Islanders knocked off the Washington Capitals 4-2 in their series opener.

Game #3:

Jakub Voracek (power play) and Joel Farabee each scored once while Carter Hart saved 27 of 28 shots as the Philadelphia Flyers took game one of their series with the Montreal Canadiens 2-1.



WESTERN CONFERENCE (All games played at Edmonton):

Game #1:

Nazem Kadri (power play), J.T. Compher, and Mikko Rantanen each scored a third-period goal while Philipp Grubauer had an easy night as he saved all 14 shots as the Colorado Avalanche opened their series with the Arizona Coyotes with a 3-0 victory.

The Coyotes, three goals came in an 83-second span.

Game #2:

Bo Horvath scored twice (once on the power play) as the Vancouver Canucks, who scored three power-play goals in all, overpowered the St. Louis Blues 5-2 in the opening contest of their conference quarterfinal series.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Lightning Outlast Jackets In 5OT Classic; Flames, Knights Also Claim Series Openers As Round Of 16 Opens

The Stanley Cup Playoffs' Round of 16 opened in Canada on Tuesday with four games.

All series henceforth through the final are best of seven.

Brayden Point scored the game winner (his second goal of the game) at 10:27 of the fifth overtime period as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in the opening game of their conference quarterfinal series.

Andrei Vasilevskiy saved 61 of 63 saves for the victory.

The Jackets' Joonas Korpisalo played gallantly in goal, saving a playoff-record 85 of 88 shots in defeat.

The game was the fourth longest in playoff history.



WESTERN CONFERENCE (All games played at Edmonton):

Game #1:

Dillon Dube scored twice (once on the power play) while Rassmus Andersson scored the game winner in the third period as the Calgary Flames defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 in their series opener.

Game #2:

Reilly Smith scored twice in the third period as the Vegas Golden Knights overpowered the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 in their series-opening contest.

At the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Bay Lake, Florida:

Larry Mabiala (27') and Dario Zuparic (66') each scored once as the Portland Timbers defeated Orlando City 2-1 in the championship match of the MLS Is Back Tournament.

The victory netted a $300,000 prize as well as a 2021 CONCACAF Champions League berth for the Timbers.

Mauricio Pereyra scored for the Lions in the 39th minute.

The Timbers will resume regular-season play on Sunday, August 23 at home against the Seattle Sounders in Cascadia Cup play (7:00 PM Pacific Time, Fox Sports One)

Zach Werenski, Liam Foudy, and Nick Folingo (empty net) each scored once while Joonas Korpisalo saved all 33 shots as the Columbus Blue Jackets blanked the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0 to advance to the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Alex Tuch scored the game winner at 4:44 of overtime as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 to seal the top seed in the Western Conference.

At Portland, Oregon:

In Saturday action from the USL Championship, Jake Leeker's own goal in the 12th minute proved fatal to Portland Timbers 2 as the hosts fell 1-0 to the Sacramento Republic.

T2, still in search of their first win of the season, will travel to Greater Nevada Field for a contest against Reno 1868 FC this coming Saturday at 7:00 PM Pacific Time (ESPN+).

Jeremy Ebobisse (13') and Sebastian Blanco (70') each scored once on Wednesday as the Portland Timbers held off the Philadelphia Union 2-1 in the semifinal round of the MLS Is Back Tournament.

Andrew Wooten scored the lone Union goal in the 85th minute.

Jesus Medina converted a penalty kick in the 27th for the CityZens' lone goal.

In Wednesday USL Championship action, Christiano Francois scored twice (40', 90') as Reno 1868 dominated Portland Timbers 2 by a 4-1 count, ruining the Portland Timbers' USL Championship affiliate's home opener.

MLS Is Back Tournament: Timbers Overcome Cincy In PK Shootout; Get NYC FC In Quarterfinals

At Bay Lake, Florida:

In the final game of the MLS Is Back Tournament's Round of 16, the Portland Timbers overcame goalkeeper's Steve Clark's boo-boo to outlast FC Cincinnati 4-2 in the penalty-kick shootout after regulation ended in a 1-1 draw.

Jaroslaw Niezgoda put the Timbers on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute, only to see the aforementioned Mr. Clark foul Cincy's Jurgen Locadia in his own penalty area, enabling Mr. Locadia to convert a game-tying penalty kick in the 81st minute, forcing the PK shootout as regulation ended (with no overtime periods)

In the shootout, Diego Valeri, Felipe Mora, Sebastian Blanco, and Jaroslaw Locadia converted their spot kicks while Steve Clark recovered from his error to make a key save on Jurgen Locadia's spot kick to help preserve the Portland victory.

The Timbers will take on New York City in a quarterfinal-round match, to be contested at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex this coming Saturday night at 7:30 PM Pacific Time (Fox Sports One/TUDN).

In Thursday finale of group-stage play in the MLS Is Back Tournament, Jaroslaw Niezgoda (7') and Jeremy Ebobisse (81') each scored once as the Portland Timbers gained a 2-2 draw with the Los Angeles Football Club to finish atop the Group F standings.

Bradley Wright-Phillips (36') and Mark-Anthony Kaye (40') each scored once for LAFC, who, like the Timbers, had already locked up a berth in the knockout stage.

MLS Is Back Tournament: Timbers Hold Off Dynamo, Advance To Knockout Stage

At Bay Lake, Florida:

Jeremy Ebobisse (36') and Diego Valeri (61') each scored once on Saturday as the Portland Timbers held off the ten-man Houston Dynamo 2-1 in Group F play in the MLS is Back Tournament as the Timbers clinched a berth in the knockout stage.

The Dynamo climbed back into the game in the 86th minute as Albeth Elis converted a penalty kick.  However, the aforementioned Mr. Elis was yellow-carded in the 87th and 88th minutes and was ejected.

The Timbers will close out group-stage play by taking on the Los Angeles Football Club this coming Thursday at 7:30 PM Pacific Time on ESPN 2.

Jeremy Ebobisse (59') and Sebastian Blanco (66') each scored a goal on Monday as the Portland Timbers, who, despite David Zuparic's red-card ejection (75'), held off the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 in the MLS is Back Tournament Group F opener for both clubs.

The victory marked the Timbers' first competitive match since their 1-0 home victory over Nashville SC on March 8.

Javier Chicharito Hernandez scored his first Major League Soccer goal for the Galaxy in the 88th minute.

Charlie Daniels, Country Music Legend, R.I.P.

Singer, songwriter, and fiddler Charlie Daniels, the iconic and legendary Country Music Hall of Famer and longtime Grand Ole Opry member best remembered for his 1979 hit "The Devil Went To Georgia,"
passed away on Monday after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke at age 83.

Mr. Daniels' publicist, Don Murray Grubbs, confirmed Charlie's passing.

'Tiz The Law Captures Rescheduled Belmont Stakes

At Elmont, New York:

In Saturday's rescheduled running of the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes, Tiz The Law, with jockey Manny Franco aboard and trained by Barclay Tagg, came out on top as the Triple Crown Series started later than scheduled due to COVID-19.

The race was originally scheduled to cap off the Triple Crown Series on June 6.

The Kentucky Derby, originally scheduled for May 2, will be run on September 5 and the Belmont Stakes (originally set for May 16) will be run on October 3.

Tiz The Law became the first New York-bred horse to win the Belmont since Forester in 1882.

Dr. Post finished second and Max Player third.
