The Portland Timbers, with Fanendo Adi scoring twice (29', 50') to set a franchise single-season record for goals scored (12), knocked off the Columbus Crew 2-1 on the road in a key Major League Soccer match on Saturday night, despite Kai Kamara's league-leading 22nd goal of the season (43') for the hosts, who were prevented from locking up a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Timbers' next contest is next Saturday at 7:30 PM Pacific Time at home against Sporting Kansas City (Timbers broadcast TV network, which includes KFBI-TV, Medford, Oregon).

Cardinal Too Much For Beavers In Corvallis In OSU's Conference Opener

Kevin Hogan threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns while Christian McCaffrey ran for a career-high 206 yards on Friday night as the Stanford Cardinal (3-1 overall, 2-0 in Pac-12 play; #21 in the Associated Press poll, #24 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings) overpowered the home-standing Oregon State Beavers (2-2, 0-1) in the Pac-12 Conference opener for the hosts.

Now It's Over: Yogi Berra, Yankees Hall of Fame Legend Who Starred On 10 WS Title Teams, Also Known For Pithy Sayings, R.I.P.

Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra, the legendary New York Yankees catcher who played in fourteen World Series (winning ten of them) and who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, passed away on Tuesday night at age 90.

A three-time American League Most Valuable Player and 15-time All-Star, Mr. Berra caught Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.

Considered one of baseball's all time-greatest catchers, Yogi remains the all-time leader among catchers in runs batted in and fourth in runs scored and home runs.

Yogi's also known for his unusual sayings.

Some of the Yogi-isms include:

"It ain't over till it's over"

"Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical"

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it"

As a manager, Yogi took both the Yankees (1964) and New York Mets (1973) to the World Series.

Not only was Yogi Berra one of baseball's greatest players, he was one of its' greatest and most colorful characters.

Jackie Collins, the author best remembered for best-selling escapist, sex-filled, unpretentious novels, and who was the younger sister of actress Joan Collins, passed away this past Saturday in Los Angeles at age 77 from breast cancer.

Red Bulls Frustrate Timbers In Portland, Clinch Playoff Berth

At Portland, Oregon:

Felipe (44') and Damien Perrinelle (45'+2) each scored a goal late in the first half and goalkeeper Luis Robales posted his 28th career shutout as the New York Red Bulls became the first club to lock up a playoff berth with their 2-0 Sunday Major League Soccer road blanking of the Portland Timbers.

The Timbers will try once again to put to together as they will visit the Columbus Crew this coming Saturday at 4:30 PM Pacific Time, to be televised over their broadcast TV network.

Ducks Rank #13 In Both Polls (Down A Spot In AP Rankings)

Following Saturday's lopsided home victory over Georgia State, the Oregon Ducks find themselves at #13 in both the Associated Press (down one spot) and USA Today/Coaches polls.

The Oregon State Beavers, despite their comeback win over San Jose State, still received no support in either poll.

Quarterback Ben Roethliesberger threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns (two of them to Antonio Brown, who gathered 195 receiving yards) and completed two two-point conversion passes while running back DeAngeleo Williams tied a franchise single-game record with three TDs on the ground as the Pittsburgh Steelers piled up 453 yards of total offense in manhandling the visiting San Francisco 49ers 43-18 on Sunday.

Henry Burris passed for 477 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running for another major score while Chris Milo haunted his former team with a game-winning field goal with six second remaining on Saturday as the Ottawa REDBLACKS (7-4) continued their push for the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup Playoffs by nipping the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-11) 30-27 on the road.

Beavers Score 21 In Third Quarter, Overcome Spartans

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Quarterback Seth Collins ran for two touchdowns and passed for another on Saturday as the Oregon State Beavers (2-1) scored 21 points in the third quarter en route to 35-21 home victory over the San Jose State Spartans (1-2) in their final non-conference game of the season.

Ducks Bounce Back, Smother Panthers At Home

At Eugene, Oregon:

The Oregon Ducks (2-1; #12 in the Associated Press poll, #13 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings) bounced back on Saturday and dominated the visiting Georgia State Panthers (1-2) 61-28 in their final non-conference game of the season.  Jeff Lockie, playing in place of injured quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr., completed 23 of 31 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns as the Ducks regained their winning form following their defeat last Saturday at Michigan State.  Royce Freeman carried the ball ten times for 101 yards and a TD.

Rondell Winchester scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute on Wednesday night as Portland Timbers 2 upended Los Angeles Galaxy II in their United Soccer League season finale 1-0 on the road.

Milo Hamilton, Hall of Fame Baseball Broadcaster, Called Hammerin' Hank's 715th HR, R.I.P.

Milo Hamilton, the long-time Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster, who, in 1974, as the Atlanta Braves' radio commentator, called Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run, passed away on Thursday at age 88 after having broadcasted Major League Baseball games for 60 years.

Before settling with the Braves (1966-75), Mr. Hamilton worked for the Baltimore Orioles, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs.

After working for the Pittsburgh Pirates and again for the Cubs, Milo would work from 1987 until suffering a heart attack in 2012 for the Houston Astros.

Niners Overpower Vikes In Regular-Season Opener

At Santa Clara, California:

Running back Carlos Hyde carried the ball 26 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns on Monday night as the San Francisco 49ers throttled the visiting Minnesota Vikings 20-3 in the National Football League regular-season opener for both teams.  

The victory came in the opening contest of Jim Tomsula's second stint as the Niners' head coach (he coached one game---a victory over Arizona---on an interim basis at the end of the 2010 season).

It was the first Monday night NFL game to be played at Levi's Stadium----site of Super Bowl 50.

New Coach For The Thunder

Andy Olson, who formerly coached the Spokane Shock, is the new head coach of the Portland Thunder.

He becomes Portland's third head coach in as many seasons.

In the aftermath of Saturday's tough setback at Michigan State, the Oregon Ducks fell five spots to #12 in the latest Associated Press college football poll.  The Ducks dropped eight spots to #13 in the USA Today/College rankings.

Moses Malone, Three-Time NBA MVP, Hall of Famer, R.I.P.

Moses Malone, a three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player and a key component of the Philadelphia 76ers' 1982-83 NBA title team, as well as a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, passed away in his sleep on Sunday morning at Norfolk, Virginia at age 60.

Mr. Malone held the distinction of becoming the first high school basketball player to go directly to the pros when, at age 19, he signed on in 1974 with the Utah Stars of the old American Basketball Association.

After having starred for Utah in his first pro season, Moses wound up with the Spirits of St. Louis when the Stars' franchise collapsed during the 1975-76 season.

When the NBA and ABA merged in 1976, Moses, whose NBA rights were originally owned by the Portland Trail Blazers (who had selected him in a dispersal draft of former ABA players), was acquired by the Houston Rockets in a trade.

Mr. Malone would be a key part of the Rockets team that reached the 1981 NBA Finals, which they lost to the Boston Celtics.

In 1982, Moses would join the Philadelphia 76ers and teamed up with fellow former ABAer Julius Erving and held lead the Sixers to the 1983 title when they swept the defending champions Los Angeles Laker in four straight games.

Justin Braun scored twice in a two-minute span (33', 34') of the first half as Sacramento Republic FC dominated Portland Timbers 2 in United Soccer League play on the road Saturday, 3-0.

At East Lansing, Michigan:

Quarterback Connor Cook threw for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns on Saturday night as the Michigan State Spartans (2-0; #5 in the Associated Press poll, #6 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings) avenged their defeat from last year and held off the visiting Oregon Ducks (1-1; #7 AP, #5 Coaches) 31-28 as the Spartans' defense held back the Ducks four times on fourth down including a key stand during the second quarter.

In Saturday Canadian Football League action, Khalil Bass intercepted a Brent Smith pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown while Matt Nichols passed for 283 yards as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-7) downed the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-10) 22-7 in the latest edition of the annual Banjo Bowl which is played between the two teams.

Wolves Break Open Game In Second Half, Manhandle Beavers As Jim Harbaugh Get First Win As Michigan Head Coach

Running back De'Veon Smith ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday as the Michigan Wolverines (1-1), after surrendering an early first-quarter touchdown, scored 35 unanswered points en route to a 35-7 beat-down of the visiting Oregon State Beavers (1-1) as Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh, in his first home game, picked up his first win as the head football coach at his alma mater.

Another Defection As The AFL Shrinks To Nine Teams

The Shock decided at the start of this month to take their cue from the Iowa Barnstormers, who did the same thing a year ago.

In the span of roughly one calendar year, the Arena Football League has lost six teams, either through clubs suspending operations, closing up shop altogether, or defecting to the more cost-effective Indoor Football League.

Spokane had been the only AFL market which did not have any teams in the Big Four American team sports leagues.

Timbers And SKC Battle To Rose City Scoreless Stalemate

At Portland, Oregon:

In an important Major League Soccer Wednesday night match, Sporting Kansas City and the home-standing Portland Timbers battled to a 0-0 deadlock.  The Timbers' Adam Kwarasey (his 12th, which tops MLS) and SKC's Tim Melia (who had seven saves) each pitched a shutout.

The Timbers' next game will be home on Sunday, September 20 against the New York Red Bulls at 2:00 PM Pacific Time (ESPN 2).

Ducks Stay Put In Respective Gridiron Rankings

Following Saturday's regular-season-opening victory over Eastern Washington, the Oregon Ducks stayed where they were in both the Associated Press (#7) and USA Today/Coaches (#5) pre-season rankings in the new college football polls that were released on Tuesday.

Despite Friday's home win over Weber State, the Oregon State Beavers received no support in either poll.

Socked For The Last Time: Judy Carne, Who Co-Starred In "Laugh-In," R.I.P.

Judy Carne, the British actress and comedienne whose lasting fame came as she portrayed the Sock It To Me Girl on the 1968-73 NBC-TV Network comedy-variety series Rowan and Martin's Laugh In, passed away last Thursday at Northampton, England at age 76, probably from pneumonia.

After appearing on TV, the stage, and movies in her native England, Miss Carne arrived in the US and gained her first television role as an exchange student in the sitcom Fair Exchange.

Judy's first starring role came in the critically-praised, but lowly-rated ABC Network sitcom Love on a Rooftop (1966-67), a romantic comedy about a San Francisco woman who disappointed her father by marrying a struggling young architect, played by Peter Deuel (later known as Pete Duel).

In Laugh-In, which was hosted by comics Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, Judy (along with Goldie Hawn, amongst others) appeared in miniskirts and other revealing costumes and jokes about sex, drugs, and politics which tested network censors.

Shapely and slender with her pixie hairdo, Judy would appear on camera and declare, in one variation or another,  that it was "It's-sock-it-to-me-time," and she would be doused with water, or she would vanish through a trap door.

Judy left the series in 1970.

Martin Milner, Co-Star Of "Route 66" And "Adam 12," R.I.P.

Martin Milner, who co-starred in two well-remembered television shows, Route 66 (CBS, 1960-64) and Adam 12 (NBC, 1968-74), passed away on Sunday at his Carlsbad, California home from heart failure at age 83.

Jean Darling, One Of Last Surviving Silent-Era "Our Gang" Cast Members, R.I.P.

Jean Darling, one of the last four remaining surviving cast members from the Silent-Era Our Gang series who then went on to appear in the original Broadway production of "Carousel," passed away this past Friday at Rodgau, Germany at age 93.

As a four-year-old, Miss Darling was cast in Hal Roach's Our Gang comedies and appeared in 52 films between 1927 and 1929 (46 of them silent, six of them talkies).

The Santa Monica, California native was born Dorothy Jean LeVake on August 23, 1922.  As Jean said in a 2009 interview, her parents split a few months after birth because her father didn't want her mother to put her into the movies.

Jean's mother legally had her named changed when she was five months old.

After leaving the Our Gang series, she would continue to appear in motion pictures.

After turning down an offer to appear alongside Mickey Rooney in one of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Andy Hardy movies, she made her Broadway debut in the 1942 musical "Count Me In."

In 1945, Jean originated the role of Carrie Pipperidge in "Carousel" and appeared in over 850 performances.

In the 1980s, after having settled down in Dublin, Jean appeared as Aunty Poppy on Irish radio and television and read kids' stories.

With Jean's passing, Lassie Lou Ahern (age 95) , Mildred Kornman (90), and Dorothy Morrison (96) are now the only remaining member of Our Gang's Silent Era cast still with us.

In Saturday's regular-season opening contest for both schools, quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr. haunted his former team as he threw for two touchdowns before leaving the game after a scary fourth-quarter hit while Royce Freeman ran for 180 yards and three TDs as the Oregon Ducks (#7 in the Associated Press pre-season poll, #5 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings) outgunned the visiting Eastern Washington Eagles 61-42, snapping the visitors' five-game winning streak against Beaver State teams.

Dean Jones, Star Of Numerous Walt Disney Movies, R.I.P.

Dean Jones, the affable boyish-looking actor best remembered for starring in numerous motion pictures from Walt Disney Productions during the 1960s and 1970s, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles from Parkinson's disease at age 84.

A Navy veteran, Mr. Jones had so impressed Mr. Disney with his portrayal of the prank-loving title role in the sitcom Ensign O'Toole (NBC-TV, 1962-63) that Walt gave him a job.

Dean would appear in a number of Disney movies including "That Darn Cat" (1965), "The Ugly Dachshund" (1966), "Monkeys, Go Home" (1967), and, most notably, "The Love Bug" (1968), as well as the 1977 sequel "Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo" and the 1982 made-for-TV flick "Herbie, The Love Bug." 

In earlier times, Dean had a minor role as a disc jockey in the 1957 Elvis Presley movie "Jailhouse Rock."

REDBLACKS quarterback Henry Burris threw for a touchdown and ran for another while the Ottawa defense sacked Saskatchewan quarterbacks a club-record 10 times.  Three of the sacks were registered by Justin Capiciotti.

Sounders Hold Off Timbers In Cascadia Cup Clash

At Seattle:

Obafemi Martins (6') and Brad Evans (PK-42') each scored a goal as the Seattle Sounders---playing in front of a club record 64,358 fans at CenturyLink Field---held off the visiting Portland Timbers 2-1 in a Sunday Major League Soccer contest that was also a Cascadia Cup clash.

Jack Jewsbury scored the Timbers' lone goal in the 58th minute.

Hall of Fame Coach Al Arbour, Who Guided Islanders To Four Straight Stanley Cup Titles, R.I.P.

Al Arbour, the Hall of Fame coach who led the New York Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships (1980-83), passed away on Friday at age 82.

A former defenseman who played for the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and St. Louis Blues, Mr. Arbour will be best remembered for his long and successful stint as head coach of the New York Islanders.

Al would go on to win 782 games as a National Hockey League head coach, second only to Scotty Bowman.

AFL Playoffs: Sharks Hold Off Soul In Philly, Will Play SaberCats For ArenaBowl Crown

At Philadelphia:

Tommy Grady threw eight touchdown passes, five of them to Joe Hills on Sunday as the Jacksonville Sharks held off the Philadelphia Soul 61-56 on Sunday to win the Arena Football League's American Conference championship.

The Sharks will travel to San Jose to take on the SaberCats in ArenaBowl XXVIII this coming Saturday at 4:00 PM, Pacific Time, to be televised on ESPN.

AFL Playoffs: Champs Detroned; SaberCats Oust Rattlers In Final Seconds And Will Host ArenaBowl XXVIII

At Stockton, California:

Quarterback Erik Mayer threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Gay with eight seconds remaining in regulation on Saturday as the San Jose SaberCats upended the visiting three-time ArenaBowl champions Arizona Rattlers 70-67 in the Arena Football League's National Conference championship game.

The SaberCats will host ArenaBowl XXVIII next Saturday (August 29)  against the winner of this Sunday's American Conference title game between Jacksonville and Philadelphia.

Stamps Hold Off Riders In Regina; Saskatchwan Off To First 0-8 Start Since '79

At Regina, Saskatchewan:

In the annual Canadian Football Hall of Fame Game (which, unlike its' NFL and Major League Baseball counterparts, counts in the league standings), Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday as the Calgary Stampeders (6-2) held off the home-standing Saskatchewan Roughriders (0-8 for the first time in 36 years) 34-31 in Canadian Football Action.

At Portland, Oregon:

Kharlton Belmar (51') and Fatawu Safiu (81') each produced a goal as Portland Timbers 2 blanked the visiting Tulsa Roughnecks 2-0 in Saturday United Soccer League action.

TImbers Battle Back From Two-Goal Deficit For Home Draw With Dynamo

At Portland:

Darlington Nagbe (76') and Lucas Melano (86') each delivered a goal for the Portland Timbers as they battled back from two goals down to gain a 2-2 home draw with the Houston Dynamo in the lone Friday Major League Soccer contest.  Oscar Boniek Garcia (39') and Will Bruin (45') each scored once for the visitors.

The Timbers next match is Sunday, August 30 at Seattle in Cascadia Cup action against the archrival Sounders at 2:00 PM Pacific Time (ESPN).

Bud Yorkin, Who Teamed Up With Norman Lear To Develop Landmark 1970s TV Sitcoms, R.I.P.

Bud Yorkin, the producer who teamed up with Norman Lear to help forge a new brand of television situation comedy in the 1970s, passed away at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles from natural causes at age 89.

Mr. Lear and Mr. Yorkin, who formed Tandem Productions, developed All In the Family and Sanford and Son (with both shows adapted from British TV series, and with the former giving birth to Maude (and that show giving birth to Good Times )and The Jeffersons.

Holy Obituary, Batman: Yvonne Craig, Actress Who Played Batgirl On 1960s TV Series, R.I.P.

Yvonne Craig, the actress who played the role of Batgirl during the final season (1967-68) of the ABC Network television series Batman, passed away on Monday at her Pacific Palisades, California home after a two-year battle with breast cancer at age 78.

Nat's Noggin Pushes Timbers Past Ex-Team On Road

At Sandy, Utah:

In the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, Nat Borchers' game-winning header against his former club carried the Portland Timbers to a 1-0 Major League Soccer road victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

The Timbers' next match is at home on Friday against the Houston Dynamo (8:00 PM Pacific Time, UniMas and Univision Deportes).

AFL Playoffs: Soul, Sharks, Rattlers Advance

The opening round of the Arena Football League playoffs concluded on Saturday with three games.

AMERICAN CONFERENCE:

At Philadelphia:

The Philadelphia Soul defeated the visiting Cleveland Gladiators 47-35.

At Orlando, Florida:

The Jacksonville Sharks were the only road team to win their divisional playoff as they knocked off the Orlando Predators 55-33.



NATIONAL CONFERENCE:

At Phoenix, Arizona:

Despite trailing 14-0 early, the Arizona Rattlers continued their quest of a fourth straight ArenaBowl title by dismantling the visiting Spokane Shock 72-41.


The conference championship games will take place next weekend.

AFL Playoffs: SaberCats Too Much For Thunder, Will Host Conference Title Game

At San Jose, California:

In Friday's opening game of the Arena Football League playoffs, the San Jose SaberCats dominated the visiting Portland Thunder 55-28 in a National Conference divisional playoff.

The SaberCats will host the conference championship game next Saturday against the winner of this Saturday's Spokane-Arizona contest.

The game will be played at the Stockton (California) Arena, since their regular home, the SAP Center, will be unavailable.

Failure Of The Outlaws

Par for the course for not only Arena Football, but pro football in general in Las Vegas.  The AFL failed three times now in Vegas, as well as CFL, XFL, and UFL teams as well.

Outlaws Quit, Thunder Make ArenaBowl Playoffs; VooDoo Finished Too

Due to Sunday's demise of the Las Vegas Outlaws (who finished the regular season at 5-12-1), the Portland Thunder, who went 5-13 for the second straight season, qualified for the Arena Football League playoffs.  It's the second consecutive post-season appearance for the Thunder.

The New Orleans VooDoo (3-14-1) also folded, leaving the AFL with ten teams.

I have an inkling that this league is in big trouble.
