John Lackey gave up but two hits in 7 1/3 shutout innings while Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty each homered as the St. Louis Cardinals stifled the visiting Chicago Cubs 4-0 in the opening game of their divisional playoff series.
At Los Angeles:
Over the course of seven shutout innings, Jacob deGrom struck out 13 batters while Daniel Murphy homered off Clayton Kershaw as the New York Mets, in their first playoff game since 2006, knocked off the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 in the opening contest of their divisional playoff series.
