That year, the South Bend, Indiana automaker became the first independent carmaker to offer an overhead valve V-8 engine, and it was available with the Commander and Land Cruiser.

Studebaker would remain the only independent to off a V-8 engine until 1955.

Studebaker closed its' South Bend plant at the end of 1963 and moved its' automobile manufacturing to its' Canadian plant in Hamilton, Ontario and ended car making in March of 1966.

Nash brought out its' British-built Met around the time that its' merger with (actually takeover of) Hudson to form American Motors was being completed.

Soon, some of the little Metropolitans were being seen in Hudson showrooms alongside the moribund Detroit automaker's "Step-down" Hornets, Wasps, Super Wasps, and Jets.

With Hudson badging, of course.

Ducks Still Unranked But Still Have Support In AP And Coaches' Gridiron Polls

Despite their lopsided demolition of visiting Southern Utah in their season opener this past, the Oregon Ducks still find themselves on the outside looking in as far as the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls are concerned.

Nevertheless, the Ducks still managed to garner support in both polls (they would be tied for 31st place with South Carolina in the former and at #31 in the latter).

Even though the Oregon Ducks were unranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches preseason football polls, both taken prior to the Ducks' season-opening dismantling of Southern Utah, they did receive some support.  They would be ranked #33 in the media and #34 in the Coaches polls.

Riders Hold Off Bombers In Regina For Third Straight Win

At Regina, Saskatchewan:

In Sunday Canadian Football League action, the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-4; 10 points) racked up their third straight victory, 38-24 over the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-3; 14 points), ending their guests' five-game winning streak while climbing out of the Western Division basement in the process.

For the Riders, quarterback Kevin Glenn threw for three touchdowns and 386 yards.

T2 And Roughnecks Battle To Sunday Draw In Portland

At Portland, Oregon:

Juan Pablo Caffa's successful penalty kick in the 44th minute lifted the Tulsa Roughnecks to a Sunday 1-1 United Soccer League road draw with Portland Timbers 2.

Jack Barmby scored for the hosts in the 13th minute.

T2's next contest is at home this coming Saturday against Real Monarchs SLC at 7:00 PM Pacific Time (streamed over timbers.com and YouTube).

Ducks Open Willie Taggart Regime On High Note By Destroying FCS T-Birds

At Eugene, Oregon:

Tony Brooks-James got the ball rolling by returning the opening kickoff 100 for a touchdown while running back Royce Freeman ran for 150 yards and four touchdowns and fellow running back Kani Benoit ran for 107 more yards and three more scores as the Oregon Ducks opened the Willie Taggart era on Saturday night by annihilating the visiting Southern Utah Thunderbirds 77-21.

The FCS's Big Sky Conference's T-Birds were also opening their regular season.

The 77 points were the most points set by the Ducks since 1916, when they scored a school-record 97 points in blowing out (and shutting out) Willamette.

Beavers Hold Off Vikings For First Win

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Quarterback Jake Luton threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Kodgins with roughly one minute left on Saturday to lift the Oregon State Beavers (1-1) to their first win of the season, 35-32 over the visiting Portland State Vikings (0-2) from the Football Championship Subdivision.

Road Draw For T2 In Texas

At Edinburg, Texas:

In a Wednesday United Soccer League match that saw both goals scored during second-half stoppage time, Bill Tuiloma scored for Portland Timbers 2 in the second minute of the added time period, only to see the hosts Rio Grande Valley Toros' Kai Greene equalized two minutes later as the two clubs battled to a 1-1 stalemate.

Timbers Gain Casacdia Cup Draw With Sounders In Seattle

At Seattle:

In front of 51,796 fans at CenturyLink Field, Diego Valeri's successfully-converted penalty kick in the second minute of first-half stoppage time enabled the Portland Timbers to gain a 1-1 Cascadia Cup----and Major League Soccer---road draw with the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

Cristian Roldan scored for the Sounders, who maintained first place in the Western Conference standings, in the 18th minute.

The Timbers still top the standings for the Cascadia Cup title.

Seattle stretched their unbeaten streak to eleven games.

Portland's next match is at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Saturday, September 9 against New York City FC at 2:30 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports).

Rams Hammer Beavers In Second Half To Smother OSU In Season Opener

At Fort Collins, Colorado:

Quarterback Nick Stevens threw for three touchdown passes (and 334 yards) while linebacker Tre Thomas ran back an interception 44 yards for another score as the Colorado State Rams broke open what was a tight game at halftime by outscoring the visiting Oregon State Beavers 34-7 in the second half en route to a season-opening (for both schools) 58-27 victory in the Rams' first contest at their new on-campus stadium on Saturday.

Riders Run Roughshod Over Eskimos In Edmonton

At Edmonton, Alberta:

In the lone Friday Canadian Football League contest, the Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-4) dominated the home-standing Edmonton Eskimos (7-2) 54-31 for their first road win of the season.

Riders quarterback Kevin Glenn completed 19 of 31 passes for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  The Saskatchewan defense ran back a pair of interceptions for touchdowns.

T2 Match In Texas Postponed

Portland Timbers 2's road match against San Antonio FC, originally set for Saturday, has been postponed until October 11 (at 5:30 PM Pacific Time, streamed via timbers.com and YouTube) due to big-time weather issues, the United Soccer League announced on Friday.

Timbers Hold Off Rapids At Home

At Portland, Oregon:

In Wednesday Major League Soccer action, Diego Valeri (21'; he scored a goal now in five straight games) and Darlington Nagbe (23') each scored once as the Portland Timbers held off the visiting Colorado Rapids 2-1.

Mohammed Saeid scored the lone goal for the Rapids in the 28th minute.

The Timbers will try to snap Seattle's ten-match unbeaten run when they visit the Sounders in a nationally-televised Cascadia Cup clash this coming Sunday evening at 6:30 PM Pacific Time (Fox Sports One).

Magazine Ad For '52 Nash Rambler

Here's a magazine ad for the 1952 Nash Rambler, as part of the Kenosha, Wisconsin's automaker's 50th anniversary, dating back to its' origins as the Thomas B. Jeffery company, which build the original Ramblers from 1902 until 1914.  Ex-General Motors president Charles Nash bought the company in 1916 from Mr. Jeffery's son Charles and renamed it Nash Motors.

This ad was released shortly after Nash and Hudson merged to form American Motors.

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis: Together Again

Iconic comedian and filmmaker Jerry Lewis, adored by many while disdained by others, who made numerous successful motion pictures, first with Dean Martin, then, from 1956 afterward, as a solo act, passed away on Sunday at his Las Vegas, Nevada home at age 91.

Mr. Lewis is also remebered as the master of ceremonies of the long-running Labor Day Weekend telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which continued on into the 21st Century.

Mr. Martin and Mr. Lewis served as one of several rotating acts that headlined the NBC Network's old Colgate Comedy Hour, which aired on Sunday nights from 1950 to 1955.

The films that Dean and Jerry made together, as well as their Colgate Comedy Hour appearances, especially in comedy sketches, highlighted Dino's cool and sophistication (and crooning) alongside Jerry's swell zany nonsense.

After Dean and Jerry split in 1956, Jerry would star in such films as "Rock-a-Bye Baby," "The Geisha Boy," "Cinderfella," "The Ladies Man, " and, perhaps, his masterpiece, which he directed himself, "The Nutty Professor."

With goals from Diego Valeri (65') and Darren Mattocks (90'+6) to go with shutout performance from goalkeeper Jeff Attinella (capped off by a big save in the 90th minute), the Portland Timbers, despite losing defenseman Larrys Madiala to a straight red card in the 80th minute,  blanked the visiting New York Red Bulls 2-0 in the lone Friday Major League Soccer match.

AFL Playoffs: It's Storm vs. Soul For the Marbles

At Tampa, Florida:

In Monday's Arena Football League playoff semifinal, the Tampa Bay Storm defeated the visiting Cleveland Gladiators 73-59.

The Storm will pay a visit on the defending AFL champions Philadelphia Soul at the Wells Fargo Center in the City of Brotherly Love in ArenaBowl XXX on Saturday, August 26 at 4:00 PM Pacific Time.

Frank Broyles, Long-Time "Hogs" Football Coach, R.I.P.

Frank Broyles, the former long-time head football coach and athletic director at the University of Arkansas, passed away on Monday at age 92.

Coach Broyles passed away of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

During Frank's 19 years as the Razorbacks' head football coach, Arkansas won nearly 70% of their games, before he retired in 1976, two years after he became the school's athletic director.

He served as an analyst on ABC's college football telecasts from 1977 to 1985

AFL Playoffs: Soul Outlast Upstart Brigade, Advance To Title Game

At Philadelphia:

In Saturday's opening contest of the Arena Football League playoffs, the defending champions Philadelphia Soul outlasted the visiting (and expansion) Baltimore Brigade 69-54 to advance to the August 26 championship game, billed as ArenaBowl XXX.

The title game will be played at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia.  The Soul will face the winner of this Monday's Cleveland-Tampa Bay semifinal.

Reds Cut Down Timbers In Toronto

At Toronto:

Justin Morrow scored twice (58', 76') while Victor Vazquez (72') and Marco Delgado (87') each tallied once as Toronto FC dominated the visiting Portland Timbers 4-1 in Saturday Major League Soccer action.

Diego Valeri scored the lone Timbers goal in 89th minute.

Portland will host the New York Red Bulls this coming Friday at 7:00 PM Pacific Time (Fox Sports One).

Glen Campbell, Iconic Country Music Singer, R.I.P.

Glen Campbell, the country and western singer and guitarist best remembered for hits such as "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," and "Rhinestone Cowboy," passed away on Tuesday in Nashville, Tennesee after several years fighting against Alzheimer's Disease at age 81.

In 2011, Mr. Campbell announced that he had been disgnosed with the disease.

A one-time guitarist for the 1950s rock 'n' roll band the Champs (who had one of R 'n' R's classic instrumentals, 1958's "Tequila"), Glen would later be part of The Beach Boys (he played twelve-string guitar in the 1965 hit "Sloop John B").

He would go on to record country-and-western hits that would become major pop hits as well, not only the three aforementioned songs at the start of this post, but "Southern Nights" as well.

Timbers Knock Off Struggling Galaxy At Home

At Portland, Oregon:

In a Sunday Major League Soccer match, Liam Ridgewell (5'), Diego Valeri (33'), and Alvas Powell (53') each scored a goal as the Portland Timbers defeated the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1.

Emmanuel Boateng scored for the Galaxy in the sixth minute and Gyasi Zardes appeared to have given the guests a 2-1 lead in the tenth minute, but, in the first video review to take place in a Timbers contest, ol' Gyasi get caught using his hand during the play and the goal was disallowed (he was even given a yellow card for that infraction).

The Timbers' next match will be a tall order as they travel to Toronto to take on the club with the best record in all of MLS, namely, Toronto FC, this coming Saturday at 3:00 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports).

Ara Parseghian, Legendary Notre Dame Football Coach, R.I.P.

Ara Parseghian, the legendary head football coach at Notre Dame who led the Fighting Irish to national championship titles in 1966 and 1973, passed away on Wednesday at age 94 from hip surgery complications.

Elected and inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980, coach Parseghian compiled a record of 95 wins against 17 defeats and four draws in his eleven years at South Bend (1963-73).

Before taking the reins at Notre Dame, Ara coached at Miami of Ohio (his alma mater) and Northwestern, where he had some good success against the Irish.

After retiring from coaching, Ara entered broadcasting and worked for ABC, then CBS.
