MLS Cup Playoffs: NYC FC, Timbers Advance To Conference Semifinals

Major League Soccer's MLS Cup Playoffs opened with two knockout-round contests on Wednesday.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At New York:

Ismael Tajouri-Shradi (10'), David Villa (26'), and Maximiliano Morales (78') each scored once as New York City downed the visiting Philadelphia Union 3-1 to advance to face Atlanta United in an Eastern Conference semifinal series.

In three playoff appearances in nine MLS seasons, the Union have never won a playoff game (0-4).



WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Frisco, Texas:

Diego Valeri scored twice (23', 71') as the Portland Timbers, despite playing most of the second half with only ten men, held off FC Dallas 2-1 on the road to become the first Western Conference club to win a knockout-round game away from home.

CFP Rankings: 'Bama Starts Out On Top

In the season's opening College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday, the Alabama Crimson Tide is ranked at the top of the heap, followed by Clemson, LSU, and Notre Dame.

Michigan and Georgia fill out the #5 and #6 slots.

Washington State is the highest-ranked Pac-12 team at #8, with Utah at #15.

College Hoops: Ducks Rank #16 In Coaches' Pre-Season Poll

In the USA Today/Coaches men's college basketball poll released last Thursday, the Oregon Ducks ranked at # 16.

As was the case with the Associated Press poll, there was no support for Oregon State, Portland, or Portland State.

Alphonso Daives And Caps Too Much For Timbers In Regular-Season Finale; Portland To Face FC Dallas On Road In Playoffs

At Vancouver, British Columbia:

In the Major League Soccer regular-season finale for both clubs (as well as 2018's final Cascadia Cup clash), Alphonso Davies, in his final game before joining Bayern Munich in the offseason, scored twice (28', 31') as the Vancouver Whitecaps knocked off the visiting Portland Timbers 2-1.

Andreas Flores scored for the Timbers in the 90th minute.

The Timbers will travel to Frisco, Texas for a MLS Cup knockout round match with FC Dallas this coming Wednesday at 6:30 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest).

Niners Blow 12-Point Fourth-Quarter Lead, Fall To Cardinals On Road

At Glendale, Arizona:

Quarterback Josh Rosen threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk with 34 second remaining as the Arizona Cardinals (2-6) overcame a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit on Sunday to hand the visiting San Francisco 49ers (1-7) their sixth straight defeat 18-15.

Ducks Fall Out Of Both Polls

Following their Saturday night debacle at Arizona, the Oregon Ducks fell out of both the Associated Press and USA Today/Amway/Coaches college football polls on Sunday.

The Ducks still have support in both polls (they would be ranked #36 and #39 respectively).

Riders Top BC Lions In Regular-Season Finale; Will Host A Grey Cup Playoff

At Regina, Saskatchewan:

Zack Evans and Ed Gainey each scored a defensive touchdown on Saturday as the Saskatchewan Roughriders (12-6) defeated the visiting British Columbia Lions (9-8) 35-16 in the Canadian Football League regular-season finale for the hosts.

The victory assured the Riders of hosting an upcoming Grey Cup Playoff game, either a divisional semifinal (November 11), or possibly the West Division Final (November 18).

The Red Sox, now leading the series three games to one, could close out the series with a game-five victory in Los Angeles on Sunday.

J.J. Taylor ran for 212 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Khalil Tate threw for three scores as the Arizona Wildcats (4-5 overall, 3-3 in Pac-12 play) blindsided the visiting Oregon Ducks  (5-3, 2-3; #19 in the Associated Press poll, #21 in the USA Today/Amway/Coaches rankings)

Beavers Erase 28-Point Third-Quarter Deficit, Knock Off Bufflaoes In Boulder In OT

At Boulder, Colorado:

Quarterback Jack Colletto ran one yard for the game-winning overtime touchdown on Saturday as the Oregon State Beavers (2-6 overall, 1-5 in Pac-12 play) came back from down 28 points early in the third quarter to snap the longest active road losing streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision (22 games) by upending the Colorado Buffaloes (5-3, 2-3) 41-34 as the Beavers ended a 13-game conference losing skid as well.

It was at Boulder that OSU picked up their most recent road victory in 2014.

2018 World Series: Dodgers Outlast Red Sox In Marathon 18-Inning Epic To Cut Series Deficit To 2-1

At Los Angeles:
Mlb World Series Boston Red Sox At Los Angeles Dodgers
Max Muncy's home run in the 18th inning on Saturday morning ended Major League Baseball's longest postseason game (which lasted seven hours and 20 minutes) as the Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the visiting Boston Red Sox 3-2 to cut their series deficit to two games to one.

That's Max, celebrating with teammate Cody Bellinger after hit the round tripper that kept the Dodgers in the series.

The Dodgers' Walter Buehler pitched seven innings of shutout baseball to keep Los Angeles in the game.

College Hoops: Ducks Reach #14 In First AP Poll

In the first Associated Press men's college basketball poll of the season, released on Monday, the Oregon Ducks find themselves ranked #14.

There was no support for any of the Beaver State's three other men's Division I programs:  Oregon State, Portland, and Portland State.

Timbers Pummel RSL, Clinch Playoff Berth

At Portland, Oregon:

Larrys Mabiala (15'), Diego Chara (68'), and Sebastian Blanco (87') each scored once while Steve Clark preserved a shutout as the Portland Timbers locked up a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs by dominating visiting Real Salt Lake 3-0.

For the first time in their Major League Soccer history, the Timbers qualified for postseason play in consecutive seasons.

Portland closes out its' regular-season schedule in Vancouver for a Cascadia Cup clash against the Whitecaps next Sunday (1:30 PM Pacific Time on ROOT Sports and ESPN+).

Rams Embarrass Error-Prone Niners In Santa Clara

At Santa Clara, California:

In Sunday National Football League action, Todd Gurley scored three touchdowns while Jared Goff threw for two more scores as the Los Angeles Rams (7-0 for the first time since 1985) demolished the San Francisco 49ers (1-6) 39-10 on the road.

Ducks Fall In Both Gridiron Polls After Defeat At WSU

Following their tough Saturday road defeat at Washington State, the Oregon Ducks fell seven spots to #19 in the Associated Press college football poll and dropped ten spots to #21 in the USA Today/Amway/Coaches rankings.

Yasiel Puig belted a three-run sixth-inning home run on Saturday as the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on the road to take the deciding game of the National League Championship series and clinch the pennant in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1977 and 1978.

The Dodgers will face the Boston Red Sox in the World Series for the first time since 1916 when the BoSox (with a pitcher named Babe Ruth) won it.  The Dodgers were in Brooklyn at the time, of course.  The Fall Classic begins in Boston on Tuesday (5:06 PM Pacific Time on FOX).

Gardner Minshew threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dezmon Patmon with 3:40 remaining on Saturday as the Washington State Cougars (6-1 overall, 3-1 in Pac-12 play; #25 in the Associated Press poll, #23 in the USA Today/Amway/Coaches rankings) raced out to a 27-0 halftime lead before holding off the visiting Oregon Ducks (5-2, 2-2; #12 AP, #11 Coaches) 34-30.

The series will be decided on Saturday with the winner advancing to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox.

ALCS: David Price Garners First Postseason Victory As Red Sox Lock Up First Pennant Since 2013; Boston To Get Home-Field Advantage In Fall Classic

At Houston:

David Price picked up his first career postseason victory on Thursday by pitching six solid innings while J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers each belted a home run as the Boston Red Sox won their first American League pennant in five years by beating the Houston Astros 4-1 on the road in game five and claimed the American League Championship Series four games to one.

The Red Sox will have home-field advantage in this year's World Series against the winner of the Los Angeles-Milwaukee National League Championship Series (which the Dodgers lead three games to two and can wrap it up with a victory in Milwaukee on Friday).

Jackie Bradley hit a home run while left fielder Andrew Benintendi made a sensational catch with the bases loaded to end the game on Wednesday night as the Boston Red Sox held off the Houston Astros 8-6 on the road in game four of the American League Championship Series.

The Red Sox can lock up their first pennant since 2013 by winning game five in Houston on Thursday.

NLCS: Clayton Kershaw Handcuffs Brewers, Put Dodgers One Win Away From NL Pennant

At Los Angeles:

Clayton Kershaw pitched seven innings of one-run, nine strikeout ball while Max Muncy hit the go-ahead single in the sixth inning on Wednesday as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 in game five of the National League Championship Series.

The Dodgers, who now lead the series three games to two, can wrap up their back-to-back National League pennants (for the first time since 1977-78) by winning game five in Milwaukee on Friday.

In the Monday Night NFL football contest, Mason Crosby connected on his fourth field goal of the game, the game winner from 27 yards out as time expired as the Green Bay Packers (3-2-1) scored 10 points in the final two minutes to knock off the visiting San Francisco 49ers (1-5-0) 33-30.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes to Davante Adams for the Packers.

In Sunday's second game of the American League Championship Series, Mookie Betts produced a pair of doubles and had two runs batted in as the Boston Red Sox held off the visiting Houston Astros 7-5 to square the series at a game apiece.

Christian Vazquez hit a home run on Tuesday night and the Boston Red Sox held off the New York Yankees for a 4-3 home win in game four of their American League divisional playoff series, which Boston won three games to one.

The Red Sox will take on the Houston Astros for the American League pennant in the Championship Series that opens in Boston on Saturday night.

Manny Machado hit a home run and had four runs batted in on Monday as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-2 in game four of their National League divisional playoff series and won the series three games to one.

The Dodgers will face the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series, set to open in Milwaukee on Friday.

ALDS: Astros Finish Off Tribe, Return To ALCS; BoSox Bomb Bombers In Bronx To Come Within One Game Of Championship Series Affair With Houston

Both American League divisional playoff series resumed on Monday.

At Cleveland:

Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run double as part of a three-run seventh inning as the Houston Astros added six more runs in the eighth inning as they finished a three-game divisional playoff series sweep of the Cleveland Indians 11-3 on the road in game three.

The Astros are heading for their second consecutive American League Championship Series, where they will face the winner of the New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox series.

At New York:

Brock Holt became the first player to hit for the cycle in a postseason game as the Boston Red Sox buried the New York Yankees 16-1 in game three of their divisional playoff series.

The Red Sox, who now lead two games to one, can close out their archrivals on Tuesday with a game-four victory at Yankee Stadium.

NLDS: Brewers Complete Sweep Of Rockies; Braves Hold Off Dodgers To Stay Alive

Both National League divisional playoff series resumed on Sunday.

At Denver:

D.J. LeMahieu and Trevor story each hit a double while the pitching staff gave up but four base hits as the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of their divisional playoff series with the Colorado Rockies with a 6-0 game-three road win.

The Brewers will open the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles-Atlanta series winner at home in Milwaukee on Friday.

At Atlanta:

Freddie Freeman hit a home run as the Atlanta Braves staved off elimination by holding off the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 in game three of their divisional playoff series.

The Dodgers, who lead the series two games to one, can still knock out the Braves with a Monday game-four win in Atlanta.

Cardinals Pick Up First Win At Error-Prone Niners' Expense

At Santa Clara, California:

Josh Rosen threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk on Sunday while the defense came up with five takeaways as the Arizona Cardinals (1-4), who had been the National Football League's lone winless team, defeated the San Francisco 49ers 28-18 on the road.

Cardinals' coach Steve Wilks picked up his first win as an NFL head coach.

Even Without Playing, Ducks Still Climb Up A Spot In Both Polls

Despite having had the past weekend off, the Oregon Ducks climbed up a spot to #17 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Amway/Coaches college football polls released on Sunday.

Timbers Smother RSL On Road

At Sandy, Utah:

In Saturday Major League Soccer action, Sebastian Blanco scored twice (70', 73') and assisted on Jeremy Ebobisse's tally in the 33rd minute as the Portland Timbers dominated Real Salt Lake 4-1 on the road.

Lucas Melano capped off the Timbers' scoring in the 88th minute.

Jefferson Savarino scored the lone RSL goal in the 55th minute.

The Timbers, on the cusp of reaching the MLS Cup Playoffs, will host RSL on Sunday October 21 at 2:00 PM (ROOT Sports Northwest; streamed live on ESPN+).

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Quarterback Gardner Minshew II threw for 430 yards and five touchdowns on Saturday night as the Washington State Cougars (5-1 overall, 2-1 in Pac-12 play) scored 28 consecutive points to break open a tight game and overpower the Oregon State Beavers (1-5, 0-3) 56-37 on the road.

The Astros can finish off the Indians with a game-three Monday victory in Cleveland.

At Boston:

Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez each belted a home run as the New York Yankees leveled their divisional playoff series at a game apiece following their 6-2 game-two road win over the Boston Red Sox.

MLB Playoffs: Brewers, Dodgers Take 2-0 NLDS Series Leads, Can Lock Up Championship Series Berths On Sunday

Both National League divisional playoff series continued on Friday.

At Milwaukee:

Jhoulys Chacin pitched five solid innings as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the visiting Colorado Rockies 4-0 in game two of their divisional playoff series.

Erik Kratz had two base hits and two runs batted in the provide offense for the Brewers.

Milwaukee can lock up the series with a game-three victory in Denver on Sunday.

At Los Angeles:

Clayton Kershaw pitched eight innings of two-hit shutout ball Manny Machado slugged a two-run homer as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the visiting Atlanta Braves 3-0 in game two of their divisional playoff series.

The Dodgers can assure themselves of a return trip to the National League Championship Series by beating the Braves (who have yet to score a run in this series) again, this time in Atlanta on Sunday.

Both National League divisional playoff series opened on Thursday.

At Milwaukee:

A two-out tenth inning single by Mike Moustakas delivered the winning run, scored by Christian Yelich, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the visiting Colorado Rockies 3-2 in the opening game of their divisional playoff series.

At Los Angeles:

Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven innings of shutout ball and the bullpen did the rest while Joc Pederson, Max Muncy, and Enrique Hernandez each belted a home run as the Los Angeles Dodgers started their divisional playoff series by dominating the visiting Atlanta Braves 6-0.

T2 Blanked At Home

At Portland, Oregon:

In Wednesday United Soccer League play, Duke Lacroix (36') and Jochen Graf (85') each scored once as Reno 1868 FC blanked Portland Timbers 2 on the road by a 2-0 score in T2's regular-season home finale.

T2, having already locked up a berth in the USL Playoffs, will close out their regular season against Phoenix Rising on the road on Saturday, October 13 (6:00 PM Pacific Time, streamed live on ESPN+).

MLB Playoffs: Rockies Outlast Cubs In Epic 13-Inning NL Wild Card Game; Get Brewers Next

At Chicago:

Troy Wolters delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the 13th inning (scoring Trevor Story from third base in the process) and then relief pitcher Scott Oberg struck out the side swinging in the last half of said inning as the Colorado Rockies outlasted the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in Tuesday's National League Wild-Card Game to open the Major League Baseball Playoffs.

This was the longest winner-take-all game in MLB postseason history.

The Rockies will open their divisional playoff series (Colorado's first since 2009) with the Brewers in Milwaukee on Thursday.
