College Football Playoff: Canes, Ducks, Hoosiers, Ole Miss Advance To Semifinals

 The College Football Playoff played its' quarterfinal on Wednesday and Thursday with four games.


WEDNESDAY GAME:


At AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas:


Quarterback Carson Beck threw for 138 yards and a touchdown as the Miami Hurricanes (12-2) knocked the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes (12-2) in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.


THURSDAY GAMES:


At Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida:


Quarterback Donte Moore completed 26 of 33 passes for 234 yards while running back James Davidson scored a pair of touchdowns as the Oregon Ducks (13-1) manhandled the Texas Tech Red Raiders 23-0 in the Capital One Orange Bowl.

It was the Ducks' defense that game the Red Raiders fits, forcing four turnovers racking up four sacks and seven tackles for losses.


At the Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena, California:


Quarterback Fernando Mendoza showed his Heisman Trophy-winning for as he completed 14 of 16 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns as the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers (14-0) ran roughshod over the Alabama Crimson Tide (11-4) 38-3.


It was the Tide's most lopsided postseason defeat ever.


At Caesars Superdome, New Orleans:


Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss threw for 362 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running back Kewan Lacy ran for 98 yards and two other TDs as the Ole Miss Rebels (13-1) knocked off the Georgia Bulldogs (12-2) 39-34.




UP NEXT:


Next Thursday, Miami will face off against Ole Miss in one CFP semifinal, the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (4:30 PM PST, ESPN).


Next Friday, Oregon will look for revenge against Indiana in the other CFP semifinal at the Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium (4:30 PM PST, ESPN).

Niners Hold Off Bears In Epic Battle

 At Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California:


Quarterback Brock Purdy accounted for five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) on Sunday as the San Francisco 49ers (12-4) held off the game Chicago Bears (11-5) 42-38 in a battle of teams that have already clinched playoff spots.


The Niners, with a victory at home against the Seattle Seahawks (13-3), can lock up the National Football Conference West Division title, and the top seed in the NFC Playoffs.

Niners Prove Too Much For Colts

 At Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis:


Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for five touchdowns (two to Christian McCaffery) as the San Francisco 49ers (11-4) pulled away from the Indianapolis Colts (8-7) in the second half to post a 48-27 road victory.


Christian McCaffery ran for 117 yards in the game.


The Colts' defeat enabled the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills,  and Los Angeles Chargers to clinch playoff berths.


Next for the Niners, a big encounter at home with the Chicago Bears (11-4) this coming Sunday (5:20 PM PST, NBC/Peacock).

2025-26 College Football Playoff: Canes, Ole Miss, Ducks Advance To Quarterfinals

The opening round of the College Football Playoff concluded on Saturday with three games.


At Kyle Field, College Station, Texas:


Running Back Mark Fletcher ran for 172 yards while quarterback Carson Beck threw for 103 yards and a touchdown as the Miami Hurricanes (11-2) defeated the Texas A&M Aggies (11-2) 10-3 on Saturday.


For the Canes, their next game is upcoming against the second-seeded (and defending national champions) Ohio State Buckeyes on December 31 at the Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (4:30 PM PST, ESPN).


At Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Oxford, Mississipp1:


The sixth-seeded Ole Miss Rebels (12-1) ran roughshod over the visiting eleventh-seeded Tulane Green Wave (11-3) 41-10.  Quarterback Trinidad Chambers completed 23 of 29 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown (also rushing for a TD as well) while running back Kewan Lacy ran for 87 yards and another score.


Next up, the Rebels will face third-seeded Georgia (12-1) in the Sugar Bowl at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on New Year's Day at 5:00 PM PST (ESPN).

At Autzen Stadium, Eugene, Oregon:


Dante Moore threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another as the fifth-seeded Oregon Ducks (12-1) manhandled the visiting twelfth-seeded James Madison Dukes (12-2) 51-34.


Next up for the Ducks, a quarterfinal-round encounter with the fourth-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders at Capital One Orange Bowl on New Year's Day at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida (9:00 AM PST, ESPN).



2026 College Football Playoff: Crimson Tide Overcome 17-0 Deficit To Knock Off Sooners On Road, Get Top-Seeded Hoosiers Next

 At Gaylord Family Oklahoma Stadium, Norman, Oklahoma:


Quarterback Ty Simpson threw for 232 yards and a pair of touchdowns on Friday as the ninth-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide (11-3) overcame a 17-0 deficit to upend the homestanding eighth-seeded Oklahoma Sooners (10-3) 34-24 in the opening game of the College Football Playoff.


Next up for the Tide is the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers in the quarterfinal round at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on Thursday, January 1 (1:00 PST/ESPN).

Quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns (two of them to Jauan Jennings, the other to George Kittle) on Sunday as the San Francisco 49ers (10-4) defeated the visiting Tennessee Titans 37-24.

Niners Prove Too Much For Brownies

 At Huntington Bank Field, Cleveland:


Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 16 of 29 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown (Jauan Jennings) while running back Christian McCaffrey carried the ball 20 times for 53 yards and another score (he also caught four passes for another 21 yards) as the San Francisco 49ers (9-4) defeated the homestanding Cleveland Browns (3-9) 26-8.


The Niners will have next weekend off and will host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, December 14 (1:25 PM PST, FOX).

Despite Sloppy Play On Offense, Niners Hold Off Panthers On MNF

 At Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California:  The San Francisco 49ers (8-4), with Christian McCaffery ran for 143 yards from scrimmage and scoring a touchdown, outlasted his former team, the Carolina Panthers (6-6) 20-9 on Monday Night Football, this despite at times, a shaky performance from quarterback Brock Purdy, who threw three interceptions.


The Niners will visit the Cleveland Browns (3-8) this coming Sunday at 10:00 AM PST (CBS/Paramount+).

Niners Too Much For Cardinals

At State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona: 


Quarterback Brock Purdy, back in action after having suffered a toe injury, threw for three touchdown passes while running back Christian McCaffery had three TDs of his own (two rushing, one receiving a pass) as the visiting San Francisco 49ers (7-4) throttled the Arizona Cardinals (3-7) 41-22 on Sunday. 


Next up for the Niners, a home encounter with the Carolina Panthers (currently at 6-5) with major playoff implications, next Monday night (ESPN, 5:15 PST).

ROUGHRIDERS WIN GREY CUP TITLE

 At Princess Auto Stadium, Winnipeg, Manitoba:


Quarterback Trevor Harris (name's the game's Most Valuable Player) completed 23 of 27 passes for 302 yards on Sunday as the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the 112th edition of the Grey Cup Game, their fifth, and their first since 2013, as they defeated the Montreal Alouettes 25-17.

On Saturday in the NHL, Nico Hischer and Pavel Sacha each scored a third-period goal ten seconds apart to help the New Jersey Devils snap a five-game losing skid by upending the hosts Dallas Stars 3-1. 


Nicolas Daws saved 27 of 28 shots for the victory. 

Giants Split First Two Games With Marlins

The San Francisco Giants opened their National League Western Division title defense on Friday as Austin Slater hit a walk-off double with two outs in the tenth inning to lift the hosts to a 6-5 home victory over the Miami Marlins.


On Saturday, however, Jesus Sanchez hit the tie-breaking single in the seventh inning as the Marlins came back to upend the Giants 2-1.

Ducks Drop Down In Gridiron Rankings After Getting Knocked Off By Stanford; Beavers Support Increases

 After getting knocked off on Saturday in overtime at Stanford, the Oregon Ducks drop down five sports to #8 in the Associated Press college football poll and down six spots to #9 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings.


Meanwhile, after upending visiting Washington, the Oregon State Beavers gained additional support in both polls, with the Beavers ranking at #28 in the AP poll and tied for #30 with Iowa State in the Coaches' rankings.

Noah Williams converted eight of twelve shots from the field en route to an 18-point performance on Sunday as the Washington State Cougars (5-0) held off the visiting Portland State Vikings (1-2) 69-60.

Niners Fall Against Ex-Redskins----At Home In Arizona

 At Glendale, Arizona (due to COVID-induced ban on sporting events in Santa Clara County, California):


Defensive touchdowns from Chase Young (returning a fumble 47 yards) and Kamren Curl (75-yard interception return) lifted the Artists Formerly Known as the Washington Redskins (6-7) held off the San Francisco 49ers (5-8) 23-15 to gain sole possession of first place in the NFC East as the shorthanded Niners' playoff chances received a crushing near-fatal blow.

Eugene Omoruyi and Chris Duarte each scored 14 points on Saturday as the Oregon Ducks (4-1 overall, 1-0 in Pac-12 play) won their conference opener by knocking off the Washington Huskies (1-4, 0-2) 74-71 on the road by using a balanced offense that saw four players scoring in double figures.


Quade Green topped the Huskies with 26 points.

Beavers Fall At Home To Cardinal

Quarterback Davis Mills completed 21 of 29 passes for 292 yards and a touchdown while running for two other scores as the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) upended the Oregon State Beavers (2-4) 27-24 on the road on Saturday night.


The schools respective records are both overall and in Pac-12 play.

The Ducks extended their home winning streak to 23 games.

Men's College Hoops: Ducks Fall Out Of Both Polls

 After a 1-1 week, the Oregon Ducks dropped out of both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches men's college basketball polls.


The Ducks still have support in both polls and would be ranked tied for #30 in the former and #30 in the latter.

Kenny Foster scored 19 points off the bench as the Wyoming Cowboys (3-1) closed out the game on a 10-2 run and upended the homestanding Oregon State Beavers (2-2) 76-73 on the road on Sunday.


Ethan Thompson led the Beavers with 20 points.

Gridiron News: Ducks Fall Out Of Polls After Defeat At Berkeley; Beavers' AP Poll Support Dissolves

 After their Saturday defeat at California, the Oregon Ducks fell out of both the Associated Press and USA Today/Amway Coaches football polls released on Sunday.


In fact, support for the Ducks in the AP poll vanished. Oregon still had support in the Coaches poll, in which they would be ranked #33.


In the aftermath of their road setback at Utah, what support the Oregon State Beavers had in the AP poll evaporated.

Ty Jordan ran for 167 yards and a touchdown on Saturday night as the Utah Runnin' Utes (1-2) knocked off the visiting Oregon State Beavers (2-3) 30-24.


The standings indicated were both overall and in Pac-12 play.

Ducks Fall On The Gridiron Against Cal Bears In Berkeley

 At Berkeley, California:


Chase Garbers completed 20 of 32 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown (while running for another one) on Saturday as the California Golden Bears (1-3) racked up their first victory of the season by upending the visiting Oregon Ducks (3-2; #23 CFP Rankings) 21-17.

Xavier Pinson scored 22 points on Wednesday as the Missouri Tigers (2-0) held off the Oregon Ducks (0-1; #21 AP, #20 Coaches) 83-75.


Eugene Omoruya scored 31 points (while grabbing 11 rebounds) and Chris Duarte added 22 to pace the Ducks who were opening their regular season.

CFP Rankings: Bama, Fighting Irish, Clemson, Buckeyes Still Where They Were; Ducks Drop To #23 After Civil War Defeat

 The Alabama Crimson Tide, Notre Dame's Fighting Irish, the Clemson Tigers, and the Ohio State Buckeyes remained in the sam position in the new College Football Playoff Rankings released on Tuesday night where they were last week.


The Oregon Ducks dropped eight spots to #23 in the wake of their Civil War upset defeat at Oregon State.


Southern California at #20 (down two spots from last week) and Washington at #22 (making their first appearance of the season) are the other Pac-12 schools in the rankings.

Niners End Losing Streak Against Rams In SoCal, Keep Playoff Chances Alive

 At Inglewood, California:


Robbie Gould kicked three field goals on Sunday, including the game-winning 42-yarder as time expired as the San Francisco 49ers (5-6) ended a three-game skid by knocking off the homestanding Los Angeles Rams (7-4) 23-20.


The Rams, who suffered their first defeat at their new home (SoFi Stadium), were swept in the season series by the Niners, whose playoff chances were given a whiff of smelling salts.

Ducks Nosedive In Gridiron Polls After Civil War Upset; Beavers Get Support In AP Rankings

 In the wake of their Friday Civil War upset at the hands of Oregon State, the Oregon Ducks dropped 12 spots to #21 in the Associated Press college football poll released on Sunday.


The Ducks fell nine spots to #20 in the USA Today/Amway Coaches poll.


As for the Beavers, they received support in the AP poll, where Oregon State would be ranked #36.

124th Civil War Game: Beavers Stun Ducks In Final Seconds

In his first play of his college career, backup quarterback Chance Nolan ran a yard for the game-winning touchdown with 33 seconds remaining on Friday as the Oregon State Beavers (2-2 overall and in Pac-12 play) upended the visiting Oregon State Beavers (3-1; #15 in CFP Rankings) 41-38 to win their first Civil War game since 2016 and basically ended any chances the Ducks had of reaching the College Football Playoff.


Beavers running back Jermar Jefferson ran for two touchdowns and a series-record 226 yards.

The Oregon State Beavers (2-0) slaughtered visiting Northwest University (of Kirkland, Washington, NAIA) 114-42 on Friday.

Warith Alatishe scored 16 points while Ethan Thompson added 15 as the Oregon State Beavers defeated the visiting California Golden Bears 71-63 in the men's basketball season opener for both schools (which counts as a nonconference contest).


Matt Bradley scored 21 points to pace the Bears.

Timbers Exit Playoffs After Falling To Hoops In PK Thriller

 At Portland, Oregon:


After a 1-1 regulation draw that was following by two fifteen-minute scoreless overtime periods, Reto Ziegler, Franco Jara, Matheus Bressan Bressanelli, Ricardo Pepi (whose equalizer in the third minute of second-half stoppage time forced overtime), Ryan Hollingshead, Matt Hedges, Tanner Tessmann, and Ema Twumasi converted their spot kicks as FC Dallas knocked off the home-standing Portland Timbers 8-7 in an eight-round penalty-kick shootout to advance to the Western Conference semifinals in the MLS Cup Playoffs.


Hoops goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer saved Jorge Villafana's spot kick to preserve the shootout victory.


Jorge scored for the Timbers in the 82nd minute of regulation.



Ducks Climb Up Two Spots In Both Gridiron Polls

After winning their home nailbiter against UCLA on Saturday, the Oregon Ducks climbed up two spots to #9 in the Associated Press college football poll released on Sunday. 


The Ducks also moved up two spots in the USA Today/Amway Coaches poll to #11.

Tristan's The Man As Beavers Overcome Cal Bears For First Win

Quarterback Tristan Gebbia passed for a touchdown, caught a pass for another, and ran for the winning TD with 4:30 remaining in regulation on Saturday as the Oregon State Beavers (1-2) overcame the visiting California Golden Bears (0-2) 31-27 for their first win of the season.


Mr. Gebbia became the first Pac-12 Conference since 1996 to complete this touchdown trifecta.

Quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday as the Oregon Ducks (3-0 overall and in Pac-12 play; #11 AP, #13 Coaches) held off the UCLA Bruins (1-2) 38-35.

 In the USA Today/Coaches men's college basketball poll released last Thursday, the Oregon Ducks were ranked #20, just in the recent Associated Press preseason rankings.


And as was the case with the AP poll, there was no support for Oregon State, Portland, or Portland State in the Coaches' rankings.

Saints Explode For 27 Unanswered Points In Triumph Over Error-Ridden Niners

Before leaving Sunday's game with injured ribs, quarterback Drew Brees threw for 76 yards and a touchdown to running back Alvin Kamara as the New Orleans Saints (7-2) overcame a 10-point deficit by scoring 27 unanswered points----14 of them off San Francisco special-team miscues----to triumph over the error-plagued Niners (4-6) 27-13.

Gridiron News:

The Oregon Ducks, fresh from their Saturday victory over Washington State, dropped a spot to #13 in the USA Today/Amway Coaches college football poll released on Sunday.


The Ducks remained level at #11 in the Associated Press poll, also released on Sunday.


Still no support in either poll for the now 0-2 Oregon State Beavers.

Huskies Hold Off Beavers In Jimmy Lake's First Game As UW Coach

Running back Sean McGrew ran for 91 years and one touchdown while Kamari Pleasant ran for 61 yards and another score as the Washington Huskies (1-0 in both Pac-12 play and overall) held off the visiting Oregon State Beavers (0-2) 27-21 in their season opener on Saturday night as Jimmy Lake was victorious in his debut as the Huskies' head coach.

Ducks Stay Unbeaten, Top Cougs On Road

 At Pullman, Washington:


Running back C.J. Verdell ran for 118 yards and a touchdown while Travis Dye caught two TD passes on Saturday as the Oregon Ducks (2-0 both overall and in Pac-12 play; #11 AP, #12 Coaches) overcame a halftime deficit to upend the hosts Wahsington State Cougars (1-1) 43-29.


Quarterback Tyler Shough completed 21 of 30 passes for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns to help the Ducks' cause.

Timbers Gain Road Draw With Late Equalizer; Will Host Hoops In Conference Quarterfinal

 At Los Angeles:


Jorge Villafana's equalizer in the 90th minute on Sunday lifted the Portland Timbers to a 1-1 road draw with the Los Angeles Football Club in the Major League Soccer regular season finale for both playoff-bound clubs.


Carlos Vela scored for the hosts in the fifth minute.


The Timbers, who wound up in third place in the Western Conference's final standings, will host FC Dallas in a conference quarterfinal contest at a date and time to be determined.

The Portland Timbers will host FC Dallas in a Western Conference quarterfinal game set to kick off at 7:00 PM Pacific Time on Sunday, November 22 on ESPN.

Kellyn Acosta scored the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute on Wednesday as the Colorado Rapids locked up a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs after knocking off the Portland Timbers 1-0 on the road.

College Gridiron: Ducks Climb Up A Spot In Coaches' Poll; Up Two In AP Rankings.

 With their season opener against Stanford at home coming up next Saturday, the Oregon Ducks still climbed up a spot to #15 in the USA Today/Amway Coaches college football poll that was released on Sunday.


In the Associated Press poll, also released on Sunday, the Ducks actually climbed up two spots to #12.


The Oregon State Beavers (who host Washington State this coming Saturday to open their gridiron campaign) received no support in either poll.

Timbers Top Whitecaps At Home, Move To Top Of West Standings

Yimmy Chara's goal in the 61st minute on Sunday carried the Portland Timbers to a 1-0 home victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer action.


The Timbers took over top spot in the Western Conference standings with two regular-season games remaining.


Portland will host the Colorado Rapids in their regular-season home finale on Wednesday at 7:00 PM Pacific Time (Timbers TV Network via KPDX-TV, Portland/ESPN+).
