Lauri Markkanen scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the second-seeded Arizona Wildcats (32-4) came back from a one-point halftime deficit and held off the seventh-seeded Saint Mary's Gaels (29-5) 69-60.

Justin Jackson scored 21 points as the top-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels (27-7), with six players scoring in double digits, demolished the sixteenth-seeded Texas Southern Tigers (23-11) 103-64.

NCAA Tournament: Mount St. Mary's Outlasts Privateers For Crack At Nova; K-State Tops Wake To Get Shot At Cincy
Two "First Four" contests were played at the University of Dayton Arena in (where else?) Dayton, Ohio as the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament commenced.
In the opener, Junior Robinson, Division I's smallest player at 5', 5" tall, stood tall as he scored 23 points as the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (20-15) picked up only their second-ever NCAA tourney victory by outlasting the New Orleans Privateers (20-12), playing in their first NCAA tourney game since 1996, 67-66.
The Mountaineers---as a #16 seed---will take on the defending national champions---and top overall seed---Villanova Wildcats in an East Region contest on Friday in Buffalo, New York.
In the nightcap, Kamau Stokes scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half as the Kansas State Wildcats (21-13) defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (19-14) 95-88.
Wesley Iwundu topped the Wildcats with 24 points.

In the opener, Junior Robinson, Division I's smallest player at 5', 5" tall, stood tall as he scored 23 points as the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (20-15) picked up only their second-ever NCAA tourney victory by outlasting the New Orleans Privateers (20-12), playing in their first NCAA tourney game since 1996, 67-66.
The Mountaineers---as a #16 seed---will take on the defending national champions---and top overall seed---Villanova Wildcats in an East Region contest on Friday in Buffalo, New York.
In the nightcap, Kamau Stokes scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half as the Kansas State Wildcats (21-13) defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (19-14) 95-88.

Ducks Drop To #9 In Both Polls
After falling just short against Arizona in Saturday night's Pac-12 Conference men's basketball tournament championship match, the Oregon Ducks, seeded third in the upcoming NCAA Tournament's South Region (they'll face #14-seeded Iona on Friday in Sacramento), dropped down four spots to #9 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls.

Timbers Hold Off Galaxy For Road Win (First Since Winning MLS Cup In Columbus In 2005); Open Season With Two Wins For First Time In MLS History

Diego Chara scored the only goal of the match in the eighth minute on Sunday as the Portland Timbers picked up a road victory---something that eluded them in Major League Soccer play all last season---1-0 over the ten-man Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Timbers open a season with two wins for the first time in seven MLS campaigns.
Portland's next match is this coming Saturday at home against the Houston Dynamo (another club that has won their first league contests of this season) at 7:30 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest).

In the opener, Corey Baldwin and Geno Crandall each scored 16 points as the top-seeded North Dakota Fighting Hawks (21-9) held off the fourth-seeded Idaho Vandals (18-13) 69-64.

Big Sky Tournament: Fighting Hawks (Who Finish Off Vikings), Vandals, EWU, Weber State Advance To Semifinals
Four games were played in the quarterfinal round of the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, all to be contested at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nevada.
Game #1:
Corey Baldwin scored 18 points and grabbed ten rebounds for his first career double-double as the top-seeded North Dakota Fighting Hawks (20-9) made short work of the eighth-seeded Portland State Vikings (15-16) 95-72.
Game #2:
Arkadiy Mkrtychyan and Victor Sanders each scored 19 points as the fourth-seeded Idaho Vandals (18-12) held off the fifth-seeded Montana Grizzlies (16-16) 81-77.
Walter Wright paced the Griz with 22 points.
Game #3:
Jacob Wiley scored 24 points and grabbed ten rebounds as the second-seeded Eastern Washington Eagles (22-10) defeated the seventh-seeded Sacramento State Hornets (13-18) 89-70.
The Hornets were led in the scoring department by Marcus Graves who delivered a career-high 29 points.

Deontae North scored 25 points and came away with three steals as the eighth-seeded Portland State Vikings (15-15) defeated the ninth-seeded Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (9-23) 80-67.
Game #2:
Nick Hornsby and Marcus Graves each scored 18 points as the seventh-seeded Sacramento State Hornets (13-17) downed the tenth-seeded Idaho State Bengals (5-26) 91-76. Ethan Telfair scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the Bengals.
Game #3:
Randy Onwuasor scored a career-best and tournament record 43 points as the eleventh-seeded Southern Utah Thunderbirds (6-26), with five players scoring in double figures, knocked off the sixth-seeded Montana State Bobcats (16-16) 108-105 in a triple-overtime thriller. Tyler Hall topped the Bobcats with 33 points (while grabbing 12 rebounds) while DeVonte Klines added 25 points to the Montana State coffers.

Two games were contested as the semifinal round of the West Coast Conference's men's basketball tournament took place as the Orleans Arena in suburban Las Vegas on Monday.

Quinton Hooker scored 29 points and came away with six steals on Saturday as the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (19-9 overall, 14-4 in Big Sky play) locked up the Big Sky Conference's regular-season crown and top seed in their upcoming tournament (which opens this coming Tuesday at Reno, Nevada) by holding off the visiting Portland State Vikings (14-15, 7-11) 82-73 in the schools' regular-season finale.
Geno Crandall helped the Fighting Hawks' cause by scoring 21 points, dishing off eight assists, and grabbing seven rebounds.

As part of a 28-point performance, Jared Brownridge converted all eleven free-throw shots as the fourth-seeded Santa Clara Broncos (17-15) upended #5-seeded San Francisco (20-12) 76-69, offsetting 33 points from the Dons' Ronnie Boyce.

In the opener, Ray Bowles scored 26 points and converted 11 of 12 foul shots as the ninth-seeded Pacific Tigers (11-21) knocked off the eighth-seeded Pepperdine Waves (9-22) 89-84, despite a career-high 41 points from the Malibu school's Lamond Murray, Jr.
In the nightcap, Jazz Johnson scored 17 points as the tenth-seeded Portland Pilots (11-21), who closed out the regular season by dropping their last 16 conference games, upended seventh-seeded San Diego (13-18) 60-55. Brett Bailey paced the Toreros with 19 points.

In the opening contest of the Major League Soccer regular season on Friday, Diego Valeri (47', PK-82') and Fanendo Adi (90'+1, 90'+3) each scored twice and Lawrence Olum once (14') as the Portland Timbers demolished visiting Minnesota United 5-1, ruining the Loons' MLS debut.
The Timbers' next match will be on the road against a somewhat higher grade of competition, namely the Los Angeles Galaxy, on March 12 at 4:00 PM Pacific Daylight Saving Time (Fox Sports One).
