Brock Nelson scored twice as the New York Islanders knocked off the Washington Capitals 3-1 on the road in the opening game of their best-of-seven conference quarterfinal series.
At Montreal:
Brian Flynt scored the winning goal at 17:17 of the third period as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the visiting Ottawa Senators 4-3 in game one of their first-round series.
WESTERN CONFERENCE:
At Nashville, Tennessee:
Duncan Keith scored the winning goal at 7:49 of the second overtime period as the Chicago Blackhawks rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to upend the Nashville Predators 4-3 in the opening contest of their opening-round series. Scott Darling, in relief of an ineffective Corey Crawford, stopped all 42 shots that he faced.
At Vancouver, British Columbia:
Kris Russell scored the winning goal with 29.5 seconds remaining in regulation as the Calgary Flames knocked off the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 in the opening game of their conference quarterfinal series. In the Flames' first playoff game since 2009, Jonas Hiller stopped 29 of 30 Canucks shots.
