Quakes Foil Timbers Comeback At Santa Clara

At Santa Clara, California:

Goals from Victor Bernardez (PK-55') and Steven Lenhart (58') enabled the San Jose Earthquakes to hold off the visiting Portland Timbers 2-1 in Saturday night Major League Soccer action, despite finishing the contest with ten men (they lost Marvin Chavez, whose second yellow card in the space of two minutes resulted in a red-card ejection in the 86th minute).

Darlington Nagbe scored the lone Portland goal in the 84th minute.

The Timbers will play host to the Vancouver Whitecaps in a Cascadia Cup clash this coming Saturday at 8:00 PM Pacific Time.

Predators Rout VooDoo, Clinch Playoff Berth; End New Orleans' Season

The Orlando Predators (7-11) locked up the last remaining Arena Football League playoff berth on Saturday with a 71-42 home victory over the New Orleans VooDoo (5-13), ending the visitors' season.

Dennis Farina, Cop-Turned-Actor, Starred On "Law and Order," R.I.P.

Dennis Farina, a 20-year veteran of the Chicago police department who became an actor, then later starred as a detective on such television series as Law and Order and Crime Story, passed away on Monday at Scottsdale, Arizona at age 69.

Mr. Farina's publicist announced his passing.  She said that Dennis had recently had a blood clot in his lung.

Time For A Rare TV Treat

Here's a kinescope of the June 3, 1950 DuMont Network telecast of Cavalcade of Stars, hosted at the time by comedian Jerry Lester (who left the show and network shortly thereafter to become one of the headliners on NBC's Broadway Open House; he would be replaced by Jackie Gleason).



Among Jerry's guests that night, which marked the series' one-year anniversary, were actors John Garfield, Kim Stanley, and Jane Pickens, as well as ventriloquist Paul Winchell (and his sidekick Jerry Mahoney).  Don Russell, who was a DuMont staff announcer, appeared as a pharmacist for the show's producers, Drugstore Television Productions (representing several regional drug-store chains).

Timbers Withstand Weather Delay, Get Point On Road After Scoreless Draw Against Philly

In Saturday Major League Soccer action, the Portland Timbers gained a 0-0 road draw with the Philadelphia Union.  The start of the second half of the contest was delayed for 45 minutes due to lightning and a driving rainstorm.

The Timbers will visit the San Jose Earthquakes at Santa Clara, California next Saturday.

The Hornets May Be Returning To Charlotte....

Andrew Jean-Baptiste scored the winning goal in second-half stoppage time (90'+4) on Saturday night night as the Portland Timbers battled from behind to overcome the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 in a nationally-televised Major League Soccer contest.

The Timbers, who climbed up to sole possession of second place in MLS' Western Conference standings, will visit the Philadelphia Union for a match next Saturday.

VooDoo Snake-Bitten By Rattlers In Arizona

At Phoenix:

Nick Davila threw for seven touchdowns on Saturday night as the Arizona Rattlers (14-2) locked up the Western Division title and home-field advantage throughout the Arena Football League's National Conference with their 79-42 frontier-styled fist-beating of the visiting New Orleans VooDoo (5-11).
