Keith Jackson, Monday Night Football's original play-by-play man who went on to become television's iconic voice of college football, passed away on Friday at age 89.
Mr. Jackson, who began his broadcasting career at Washington State University in 1952, was the original play-by-play man for ABC's Monday Night Football NFL telecasts when the series debut in 1970, but was replaced as straight man to Howard Cosell and Don Meredith the following year by Frank Gifford, who came over from CBS.
But it would be as play-by-play for ABC's NCAA college football telecasts that Keith would indeed become a legend, calling contests over a span of roughly half a decade.
He will be best remembered for such phrases as "WHOA Nellie," Fum-BULL," and calling the Rose Bowl "The Grandaddy of Them All," amongst others.
