MLS Cup Playoffs: Timbers Hold Off Sounders To Advance; Galaxy Detrhoned By RSL In OT


The quarterfinal round of the Major League Soccer Cup Playoffs concluded on Thursday with two games.

At Sandy, Utah:

After Sebastian Valasquez scored in the 35th minute to give Real Salt Lake a 1-0 game-two regulation advantage over the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy to force overtime, Chris Schuler scored the series-winning goal in the 102nd minute to give RSL a 2-1 series-aggregate victory in their Western Conference semifinal series, dethroning the two-time defending MLS Cup champions in the process.

At Portland, Oregon:

Goals from Will Johnson (PK-29'), Diego Valeri (44'), and Mamadou Futty Dansa (47'), the Portland Timbers held off the visiting Seattle Sounders 3-2 in game two of their Western Conference semifinal series and took the two-match set 5-3 on aggregate.

Portland will travel to Sandy, Utah for Sunday's opening match of the Western Conference final against Real Salt Lake (6:00 PM Pacific Time, ESPN)
