It's Movie Time, Gang!

Originally released by Sono-Art World Wide Pictures, it's time for the 1932 movie "The Crooked Circle."  In this one, a group of amateur detectives sets out to expose The Crooked Circle, a secretive group of hooded occultists.  This movie stars Zasu Pitts, James Gleason, and Ben Lyon.  Produced by William Sistrom and directed by H. Bruce Humberstone, with screenplay by Ralph Spence and additional dialogue by Tim Whelan.  This is an Astor Pictures re-release print.

Smokin' Joe Frazier, Former Heavyweight Champion, R. I. P.

Smokin' Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champion who fought Muhammad Ali three times, passed away on Monday in Philadelphia following a brief battle with liver cancer at age 67.


Mr. Frazier, who won the heavyweight title in 1968, became the first boxer to knock down and defeat Mr. Ali at New York's Madison Square Garden in 1971.  In the last fight between the twosome in Manilla in 1975, Smokin' Joe (who had lost the title to George Foreman two years earlier) gave Muhammad (who won back the title by defeating Mr. Foreman in 1974 in Zaire)all he could handle, going 14 rounds, never giving an inch, but had to be held back by trainer Eddie Futch because he was unable to see.


Rest in peace, Joe.

Here's a monochrome kinescope of the October 28, 1954 CBS Network telecast of Shower of Stars, sponsored by Chrysler Corporation.  During the show's four-year run (1954-58) it was seen once a month in the time slot normally occupied by another Chrysler sponored series, the drama anthology series Climax.  Hosted by William Lundigan, this telecast of SofS stars Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarty, Gene Nelson, Sheree North, and Mario Lanza.

This program originally aired live and in color.  This surviving print is in black and white.

Ducks Climb Up A Spot In BCS Rankings; Stay Put In Media And Coaches Polls

The Oregon Ducks, following their Saturday night win at Washington, and with the big game coming up at Stanford, climbed up a spot to #7 in the latest Bowl Championship Series rankings, released on Sunday.  The Ducks remained at #6 in both the Associated Press (media)  and USA Today/Coaches polls.


Despite losing to Stanford, the Oregon State Beavers climbed up one spot in the BCS rankings, to #99.

Six In A Row For The Niners; Frank Gore Sets Franchise Record

At Landover, Maryland:


Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 200 yards and a touchdown (30 yards to tight end Bruce Miller) while Frank Gore ran for 107 yards to become the first player in franchise history to run for 100 or more yards in five consecutive games as the San Francisco 49ers (6-1) won their sixth straight National Football League game on Sunday (their longest winning streak since 1997), defeating the slumping Washington Redskins (3-5) 19-11 on the road.  The Niners are off to their best start in fourteen years while the Redskins have dropped four games in a row.


David Akers made four field goals for San Francisco, of 52, 34, 45, and 20 yards.

Victory Over UW Sets Ducks Up For Big Showdown With Stanford

At Seattle:


LaMichael James ran for 156 yards and a touchdown as the Oregon Ducks, ranked #8 in the current BCS standings (8-1 overall, 6-0 in Pac-12 play) pulled away from the Washington Huskies (6-3, 4-2) 34-17 on Saturday night, the Ducks' eighth straight win overall and eighth successive over their rivals from the Emerald City.  The game was the Huskies' final home contest at Husky Stadium before its' $250 million renovation.


The Ducks will carry that winning streak into Palo Alto for their showdown with unbeaten Stanford next Saturday.

Stanford Stays Unbeaten At OSU's Expense; No Bowl For Beavers

At Corvallis, Oregon:


Andrew Luck threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday as Stanford (#4 in BCS rankings; 9-0 overall, 7-0 in Pac-12 play) broke open a surprisingly close contest and ended up overpowering Oregon State (2-7, 2-4) 38-13.  The Cardinal will next battle #8 Oregon at home next Saturday while the loss eliminated the Beavers from contention for post-season play.

Andy Rooney, Lovable Grouch Of "60 Minutes," Signs Off For Good

Andy Rooney, the long-time CBS News commentator best remembered for his weekly essays on the CBS News magazine series 60 Minutes, passed away on Friday in New York City at age 92, roughly a month following his final appearance on Minutes.  


Mr. Rooney's essays were a feature on the Sunday night newsmagazine for 33 years.

Roughriders End Season Winless Against Division Opponents After Tough Defeat In Edmonton

Adarius Bowman scored a pair of touchdowns on Friday as the Edmonton Eskimos (11-7) assured themselves of hosting a playoff game for the first time in seven years following their regular-season-concluding 23-10 home win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-13), who finished the Canadian Football League season having lost all ten games against Western Division opponents.
