In Tuesday's opening game of the Major League Baseball playoffs, Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer and Aaron Judge delivered a two-run shot as the New York Yankees defeated the visiting Minnesota Twins 8-4 in the American League Wild Card Game.

The Yankees will travel to Cleveland to take on the Indians in the opening game of their divisional playoff series on Thursday.

Niners Drop OT Heartbreaker To Cardinals In Glendale

At Glendale, Arizona:

With 32 seconds remaining in overtime, quarterback Carson Palmer completed a 19-yard pass to veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald for the game's lone touchdown as the Arizona Cardinals (2-2) defeated the visiting San Francisco 49ers (0-4) 18-15 on Sunday.

Robbie Gould's five field goals (including one in overtime) produced all of the Niners' points, while his Arizona counterpart Phil Dawson (an ex-49er) kicked four three-pointers.

Justin Herbert, before coming out of the game with an injury, threw for a touchdown and ran for another while Kani Benoit ran for 138 yards and two more scores (one, a career-long 68-yarder) on Saturday night as the Oregon Ducks (4-1 overall, 1-1 in Pac-12 play) outdistanced the visiting California Golden Bears (3-2, 0-2) 45-24 to match their 2016 victory total, despite suffering a number of injuries in the contest.

Huskies Devour Beavers In Corvallis

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Quarterback Jake Browning completed 26 of 34 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns (all to Dante Pettis) while Myles Gaskin ran for 113 yards and another scored as the Washington Huskies (#6 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Amway Coaches polls; 5-0 overall, 2-0 in Pac-12 play) demolished the Oregon State Beavers (1-4, 0-2) 42-7.

Quakes Hold Off Timbers At Home, Prevent Portland From Clinching Playoff Berth, Snap DV8's Consecutive Games Scoring Streak

At San Jose, California:

Vako Qazaishvili (16) and Danny Hoesen (49') each scored once as the San Jose Earthquakes kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 Saturday night Major League Soccer home victory over the Portland Timbers.

Sebastian Blanco scored the Timbers' lone goal in the 87th minute.

The defeat kept the Timbers from clinching an MLS Cup Playoff berth.  Portland's Diego Valeri saw his MLS-record consecutive games scoring streak snapped at nine.

The Timbers' next game will be at home against DC United on Sunday, October 15 at 4:30 PM Pacific Time (ROOT Sports Northwest).

T2 Knock Off Whitecaps 2 On Road

At Langley, British Columbia:

Victor Arboleda scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute on Saturday as Portland Timbers 2 knocked off Vancouver Whitecaps 2 by a score of 1-0 in United Soccer League action.

T2 will pay a visit on Los Angeles Galaxy II next Saturday night at 7:30 PM Pacific Time (to be streamed live over timbers.com and YouTube).

I Think I'll Take Door Number Two, Saint Peter

Monty Hall, the Winnipeg-born co-creator and iconic host of the long-running television game show Let's Make A Deal, passed away on Saturday at his Beverly Hills, California home at age 96.

Mr. Hall passed away from heart failure, some three months after the passing of his television-producer wife of nearly 70 years.

On LMAD, costume-sporting contestants in the studio audience would try like the dickens to get Monty's attention for a chance to win (or trade up to win) fabulous prizes, even at the risk of getting a piece of crap (or getting "zonked") instead.

Some might say that this show was a testament to greed.

Maybe so, but that was a fun testament to greed.

The original series first aired late in 1963 on NBC, then moved to ABC some five years later before leaving that network in 1976.

After running on ABC's prime time schedule in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the nighttime show went into syndication.

Monty hosted a pair of 1980s syndication efforts.  The current version, hosted by Wayne Brady, was launched on CBS in 2009.

Shaun Wright-Phillips (8') and Jason Johnson (82') each scored once on Wednesday night as Phoenix Rising FC blanked Portland Timbers 2 by a 2-0 count in T2's United Soccer League home finale for the season.

The Portland Timbers' USL affiliate will pay a visit on Vancouver Whitecaps FC II this coming Saturday at 3:00 PM Pacific Time (streamed over timbers.com and YouTube).

After getting knocked off at Arizona State on Saturday, the Oregon Ducks fell out of both the Associated Press and USA Today/Amway Coaches college football polls.

The Webfoots still have support in both the AP (where they would be ranked in a three-way tie for #36) and Coaches (two-way tie for #36) polls.
