Anthony Allen scored the game-winning touchdown with 28 seconds remaining on Sunday as the Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-2) pulled out a 35-30 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-4) in Canadian Football League action.

The victory was the 'Riders' sixth straight.

Alvas Powell (51'), Maximiliano Urruti (75'), and Rodney Wallace (79') each delivered a goal on Saturday night as the Portland Timbers climbed up to the fifth and final Major League Soccer Western Conference playoff berth with a 3-0 Cascadia Cup road win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

In the college football regular-season opener for both schools, quarterback Sean Mannion threw for 328 yards and a touchdown while running for another while Garrett Owens kicked five field goals as the Oregon State Beavers overcame a 14-13 halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Portland State Vikings (FCS) 29-14 on Saturday.

In the college football regular-season opener for both schools, quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 267 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score before sitting out the second half as the Oregon Ducks (#3 in the Associated Press poll, #4 in the USA Today/Coaches rankings) smothered the visiting South Dakota Coyotes from the Football Championship Subdivision 62-13 on Saturday night.

The Oregon Ducks ranked third in the Associated Press (media) preseason college football poll (with one first-place vote), fourth in the USA Today/Coaches poll (also with one first-place vote; Florida State and Alabama are ranked #1 and #2 in both polls; Oklahoma ranked third in the Coaches' poll, fourth in the AP rankings). 

The Oregon State Beavers received support in both rankings.  They would be ranked tied for 41st place in the AP poll, tied for 46th in the Coaches' rankings.

Obafemi Martins scored twice (18', 76') and assisted on Clint Dempsey's goal in the 34th minute on Sunday as the Seattle Sounders regained the lead in Major League Soccer's Supporters Shield race with a 4-2 Cascadia Cup road win over the Portland Timbers.

With the defeat, the Timbers blew another chance to move into the Western Conference's playoff spots.

It was the Rattlers' fifth AFL title overall and the most lopsided match in ArenaBowl history.

Here's a 1951 magazine advertisement for Post Sugar Crisp cereal, which had just gone on the market.  This ad features the Three Sugar Bears, Handy, Dandy, and Candy.  By the early 1960s, they would be replaced as spokesmen for the cereal by some pimp-smooth sweater-wearing character came across as a combo of Bing Crosby and Dean Martin.

Don Pardo, Longtime "SNL" Announcer, R.I.P.

Don Pardo, the longtime announcer on NBC Television's Saturday Night Live, passed away on Monday at Tucson, Arizona at age 96.

From the show's beginning in 1975 through 37 of the show's first 38 seasons (missing only 1981-82, the show's seventh), Mr. Pardo introduced cast members who would eventually become stars, such as Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, and Tina Fay, amongst others.

The Massachusetts-born son of Polish immigrants, Don was a longtime staff announcer at NBC (he joined NBC Radio in 1944), having announced the original (Bill Cullen-hosted) version of The Price Is Right and the original (Art Fleming-hosted) version of Jeopardy.
